    Origin

    “चतुन्नं, भिक्खवे, सतिपट्ठानानं समुदयञ्च अत्थङ्गमञ्च देसेस्सामि। तं सुणाथ।

    “Catunnaṁ, bhikkhave, satipaṭṭhānānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca desessāmi. Taṁ suṇātha.

    “Bhikkhus, I will teach you the origin and the ending of the four kinds of mindfulness meditation. Listen …

    को च, भिक्खवे, कायस्स समुदयो? आहारसमुदया कायस्स समुदयो; आहारनिरोधा कायस्स अत्थङ्गमो।

    Ko ca, bhikkhave, kāyassa samudayo? Āhārasamudayā kāyassa samudayo; āhāranirodhā kāyassa atthaṅgamo.

    And what is the origin of the body? The body originates from food. When food ceases, the body ends.

    फस्ससमुदया वेदनानं समुदयो; फस्सनिरोधा वेदनानं अत्थङ्गमो।

    Phassasamudayā vedanānaṁ samudayo; phassanirodhā vedanānaṁ atthaṅgamo.

    Feelings originate from contact. When contact ceases, feelings end.

    नामरूपसमुदया चित्तस्स समुदयो; नामरूपनिरोधा चित्तस्स अत्थङ्गमो।

    Nāmarūpasamudayā cittassa samudayo; nāmarūpanirodhā cittassa atthaṅgamo.

    The mind originates from name and form. When name and form cease, the mind ends.

    मनसिकारसमुदया धम्मानं समुदयो; मनसिकारनिरोधा धम्मानं अत्थङ्गमो”ति।

    Manasikārasamudayā dhammānaṁ samudayo; manasikāranirodhā dhammānaṁ atthaṅgamo”ti.

    Principles originate from application of mind. When application of mind ends, principles end.”
