    Seers by the Ocean

    सावत्थियं।

    At Sāvatthī.

    “भूतपुब्बं, भिक्खवे, सम्बहुला इसयो सीलवन्तो कल्याणधम्मा समुद्दतीरे पण्णकुटीसु सम्मन्ति।

    “Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, sambahulā isayo sīlavanto kalyāṇadhammā samuddatīre paṇṇakuṭīsu sammanti.

    “Once upon a time, bhikkhus, several seers who were ethical, of good character, settled in leaf huts on the ocean shore.

    तेन खो पन समयेन देवासुरसङ्गामो समुपब्यूळ्हो अहोसि।

    Tena kho pana samayena devāsurasaṅgāmo samupabyūḷho ahosi.

    Now at that time a battle was fought between the gods and the demons.

    अथ खो, भिक्खवे, तेसं इसीनं सीलवन्तानं कल्याणधम्मानं एतदहोसि: ‘धम्मिका खो देवा, अधम्मिका असुरा। सियापि नो असुरतो भयं। यन्नून मयं सम्बरं असुरिन्दं उपसङ्कमित्वा अभयदक्खिणं याचेय्यामाऽति।

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, tesaṁ isīnaṁ sīlavantānaṁ kalyāṇadhammānaṁ etadahosi: ‘dhammikā kho devā, adhammikā asurā. Siyāpi no asurato bhayaṁ. Yannūna mayaṁ sambaraṁ asurindaṁ upasaṅkamitvā abhayadakkhiṇaṁ yāceyyāmā’ti.

    Then the seers thought, ‘The gods are principled, the demons are unprincipled. We may be at risk from the demons. Why don’t we approach Sambara, lord of demons, and beg him for a pledge of safety.’

    अथ खो, भिक्खवे, ते इसयो सीलवन्तो कल्याणधम्मा—सेय्यथापि नाम बलवा पुरिसो समिञ्जितं वा बाहं पसारेय्य, पसारितं वा बाहं समिञ्जेय्य; एवमेव—समुद्दतीरे पण्णकुटीसु अन्तरहिता सम्बरस्स असुरिन्दस्स सम्मुखे पातुरहेसुं। अथ खो, भिक्खवे, ते इसयो सीलवन्तो कल्याणधम्मा सम्बरं असुरिन्दं गाथाय अज्झभासिंसु:

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, te isayo sīlavanto kalyāṇadhammā—seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiñjitaṁ vā bāhaṁ pasāreyya, pasāritaṁ vā bāhaṁ samiñjeyya; evameva—samuddatīre paṇṇakuṭīsu antarahitā sambarassa asurindassa sammukhe pāturahesuṁ. Atha kho, bhikkhave, te isayo sīlavanto kalyāṇadhammā sambaraṁ asurindaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsiṁsu:

    Then, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, those seers vanished from those leaf huts on the ocean shore and reappeared in Sambara’s presence. Then those seers addressed Sambara in verse:

    ‘इसयो सम्बरं पत्ता, याचन्ति अभयदक्खिणं; कामङ्करो हि ते दातुं, भयस्स अभयस्स वाऽति।

    ‘Isayo sambaraṁ pattā, yācanti abhayadakkhiṇaṁ; Kāmaṅkaro hi te dātuṁ, bhayassa abhayassa vā’ti.

    ‘The seers have come to Sambara to beg for a pledge of safety. For you can give them what you wish, whether danger or safety.’

    ‘इसीनं अभयं नत्थि, दुट्ठानं सक्कसेविनं; अभयं याचमानानं, भयमेव ददामि वोऽति।

    ‘Isīnaṁ abhayaṁ natthi, duṭṭhānaṁ sakkasevinaṁ; Abhayaṁ yācamānānaṁ, bhayameva dadāmi vo’ti.

    ‘There is no safety for seers, the hated associates of Sakka! Though you beg me for your safety, I’ll only give you fear!’

    ‘अभयं याचमानानं, भयमेव ददासि नो; पटिग्गण्हाम ते एतं, अक्खयं होतु ते भयं।

    ‘Abhayaṁ yācamānānaṁ, bhayameva dadāsi no; Paṭiggaṇhāma te etaṁ, akkhayaṁ hotu te bhayaṁ.

    ‘Though we beg you for our safety, you give us only fear. This is what we get from you: may endless peril come to you!

    यादिसं वपते बीजं, तादिसं हरते फलं; कल्याणकारी कल्याणं, पापकारी च पापकं; पवुत्तं तात ते बीजं, फलं पच्चनुभोस्ससीऽति।

    Yādisaṁ vapate bījaṁ, tādisaṁ harate phalaṁ; Kalyāṇakārī kalyāṇaṁ, pāpakārī ca pāpakaṁ; Pavuttaṁ tāta te bījaṁ, phalaṁ paccanubhossasī’ti.

    Whatever kind of seed you sow, that is the fruit you reap. A doer of good gets good, a doer of bad gets bad. You have sown your own seed, friend, now you’ll experience the fruit.’

    अथ खो, भिक्खवे, ते इसयो सीलवन्तो कल्याणधम्मा सम्बरं असुरिन्दं अभिसपित्वा—सेय्यथापि नाम बलवा पुरिसो समिञ्जितं वा बाहं पसारेय्य, पसारितं वा बाहं समिञ्जेय्य; एवमेव—सम्बरस्स असुरिन्दस्स सम्मुखे अन्तरहिता समुद्दतीरे पण्णकुटीसु पातुरहेसुं।

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, te isayo sīlavanto kalyāṇadhammā sambaraṁ asurindaṁ abhisapitvā—seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiñjitaṁ vā bāhaṁ pasāreyya, pasāritaṁ vā bāhaṁ samiñjeyya; evameva—sambarassa asurindassa sammukhe antarahitā samuddatīre paṇṇakuṭīsu pāturahesuṁ.

    Then those seers, having cursed Sambara, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, vanished from Sambara’s presence and reappeared in those leaf huts on the ocean shore.

    अथ खो, भिक्खवे, सम्बरो असुरिन्दो तेहि इसीहि सीलवन्तेहि कल्याणधम्मेहि अभिसपितो रत्तिया सुदं तिक्खत्तुं उब्बिज्जी”ति।

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, sambaro asurindo tehi isīhi sīlavantehi kalyāṇadhammehi abhisapito rattiyā sudaṁ tikkhattuṁ ubbijjī”ti.

    But after being cursed by the seers, Sambara woke in alarm three times that night.”

    पठमो वग्गो।

    तस्सुद्दानं

    Tassuddānaṁ

    सुवीरं सुसीमञ्चेव, धजग्गं वेपचित्तिनो; सुभासितं जयञ्चेव, कुलावकं नदुब्भियं; वेरोचन असुरिन्दो, इसयो अरञ्ञकञ्चेव; इसयो च समुद्दकाति।

    Suvīraṁ susīmañceva, dhajaggaṁ vepacittino; Subhāsitaṁ jayañceva, kulāvakaṁ nadubbhiyaṁ; Verocana asurindo, isayo araññakañceva; Isayo ca samuddakāti.
