At Sāvatthī.
तेन खो पन समयेन सङ्गारवो नाम ब्राह्मणो सावत्थियं पटिवसति उदकसुद्धिको, उदकेन परिसुद्धिं पच्चेति, सायं पातं उदकोरोहनानुयोगमनुयुत्तो विहरति। अथ खो आयस्मा आनन्दो पुब्बण्हसमयं निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय सावत्थिं पिण्डाय पाविसि।
Tena kho pana samayena saṅgāravo nāma brāhmaṇo sāvatthiyaṁ paṭivasati udakasuddhiko, udakena parisuddhiṁ pacceti, sāyaṁ pātaṁ udakorohanānuyogamanuyutto viharati. Atha kho āyasmā ānando pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiṁ piṇḍāya pāvisi.
Now at that time there was a brahmin named Saṅgārava staying in Sāvatthī. He practiced purification by water, believing in purification by water. He lived committed to the practice of immersing himself in water at dawn and dusk. Then Venerable Ānanda robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Sāvatthī for alms.
सावत्थियं पिण्डाय चरित्वा पच्छाभत्तं पिण्डपातपटिक्कन्तो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा आनन्दो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “इध, भन्ते, सङ्गारवो नाम ब्राह्मणो सावत्थियं पटिवसति उदकसुद्धिको, उदकेन सुद्धिं पच्चेति, सायं पातं उदकोरोहनानुयोगमनुयुत्तो विहरति। साधु, भन्ते, भगवा येन सङ्गारवस्स ब्राह्मणस्स निवेसनं तेनुपसङ्कमतु अनुकम्पं उपादाया”ति। अधिवासेसि भगवा तुण्हीभावेन।
Sāvatthiyaṁ piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṁ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “idha, bhante, saṅgāravo nāma brāhmaṇo sāvatthiyaṁ paṭivasati udakasuddhiko, udakena suddhiṁ pacceti, sāyaṁ pātaṁ udakorohanānuyogamanuyutto viharati. Sādhu, bhante, bhagavā yena saṅgāravassa brāhmaṇassa nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkamatu anukampaṁ upādāyā”ti. Adhivāsesi bhagavā tuṇhībhāvena.
He wandered for alms in Sāvatthī. After the meal, on his return from almsround, he went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, “Sir, there is a brahmin named Saṅgārava staying in Sāvatthī. He practices purification by water, believing in purification by water. He lives committed to the practice of immersing himself in water at dawn and dusk. Please visit him at his home out of compassion.” The Buddha consented with silence.
अथ खो भगवा पुब्बण्हसमयं निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय येन सङ्गारवस्स ब्राह्मणस्स निवेसनं तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा पञ्ञत्ते आसने निसीदि। अथ खो सङ्गारवो ब्राह्मणो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवता सद्धिं सम्मोदि।
Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya yena saṅgāravassa brāhmaṇassa nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. Atha kho saṅgāravo brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi.
Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, went to the home of the brahmin Saṅgārava, and sat down on the seat spread out. Then the brahmin Saṅgārava went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.
सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो सङ्गारवं ब्राह्मणं भगवा एतदवोच: “सच्चं किर त्वं, ब्राह्मण, उदकसुद्धिको, उदकेन सुद्धिं पच्चेसि, सायं पातं उदकोरोहनानुयोगमनुयुत्तो विहरसी”ति?
Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho saṅgāravaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ bhagavā etadavoca: “saccaṁ kira tvaṁ, brāhmaṇa, udakasuddhiko, udakena suddhiṁ paccesi, sāyaṁ pātaṁ udakorohanānuyogamanuyutto viharasī”ti?
When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him, “Is it really true, brahmin, that you practice purification by water, believing in purification by water; that you live committed to the practice of immersing yourself in water at dawn and dusk?”
“एवं, भो गोतम”।
“Evaṁ, bho gotama”.
“Yes, Master Gotama.”
“किं पन त्वं, ब्राह्मण, अत्थवसं सम्पस्समानो उदकसुद्धिको, उदकसुद्धिं पच्चेसि, सायं पातं उदकोरोहनानुयोगमनुयुत्तो विहरसी”ति?
“Kiṁ pana tvaṁ, brāhmaṇa, atthavasaṁ sampassamāno udakasuddhiko, udakasuddhiṁ paccesi, sāyaṁ pātaṁ udakorohanānuyogamanuyutto viharasī”ti?
“But brahmin, for what reason do you practice purification by water?”
“इध मे, भो गोतम, यं दिवा पापकम्मं कतं होति, तं सायं न्हानेन पवाहेमि, यं रत्तिं पापकम्मं कतं होति तं पातं न्हानेन पवाहेमि। इमं ख्वाहं, भो गोतम, अत्थवसं सम्पस्समानो उदकसुद्धिको, उदकेन सुद्धिं पच्चेमि, सायं पातं उदकोरोहनानुयोगमनुयुत्तो विहरामी”ति।
“Idha me, bho gotama, yaṁ divā pāpakammaṁ kataṁ hoti, taṁ sāyaṁ nhānena pavāhemi, yaṁ rattiṁ pāpakammaṁ kataṁ hoti taṁ pātaṁ nhānena pavāhemi. Imaṁ khvāhaṁ, bho gotama, atthavasaṁ sampassamāno udakasuddhiko, udakena suddhiṁ paccemi, sāyaṁ pātaṁ udakorohanānuyogamanuyutto viharāmī”ti.
“It’s because, Master Gotama, whatever bad deeds I’ve done during the day I wash off by bathing at dusk; and whatever bad deeds I’ve done during the night, I wash off by bathing at dawn. That’s the reason why I practice purification by water.”
“धम्मो रहदो ब्राह्मण सीलतित्थो, अनाविलो सब्भि सतं पसत्थो; यत्थ हवे वेदगुनो सिनाता, अनल्लगत्ताव तरन्ति पारन्”ति।
“Dhammo rahado brāhmaṇa sīlatittho, Anāvilo sabbhi sataṁ pasattho; Yattha have vedaguno sinātā, Anallagattāva1 taranti pāran”ti.
“The teaching is a lake with shores of ethics, brahmin, unclouded, praised by the fine to the good. There the knowledge masters go to bathe, and cross to the far shore without getting wet.”
एवं वुत्ते, सङ्गारवो ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम, अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम …पे… उपासकं मं भवं गोतमो धारेतु अज्जतग्गे पाणुपेतं सरणं गतन्”ति।
Evaṁ vutte, saṅgāravo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama, abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.
When he had spoken, Saṅgārava said to the Buddha, “Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent! … From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
