    Who Sakka Worships

    सावत्थियं जेतवने। तत्र खो …पे… एतदवोच:

    Sāvatthiyaṁ jetavane. Tatra kho …pe… etadavoca:

    Near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove.

    “भूतपुब्बं, भिक्खवे, सक्को देवानमिन्दो मातलिं सङ्गाहकं आमन्तेसि: ‘योजेहि, सम्म मातलि, सहस्सयुत्तं आजञ्ञरथं, उय्यानभूमिं गच्छाम सुभूमिं दस्सनायाऽति।

    “bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo mātaliṁ saṅgāhakaṁ āmantesi: ‘yojehi, samma mātali, sahassayuttaṁ ājaññarathaṁ, uyyānabhūmiṁ gacchāma subhūmiṁ dassanāyā’ti.

    “Once upon a time, bhikkhus, Sakka, lord of gods, addressed his charioteer Mātali, ‘My dear Mātali, harness the chariot with its team of a thousand thoroughbreds. We will go to a park and see the scenery.’

    ‘एवं, भद्दन्तवाऽति खो, भिक्खवे, मातलि सङ्गाहको सक्कस्स देवानमिन्दस्स पटिस्सुत्वा, सहस्सयुत्तं आजञ्ञरथं योजेत्वा सक्कस्स देवानमिन्दस्स पटिवेदेसि: ‘युत्तो खो ते, मारिस, सहस्सयुत्तो आजञ्ञरथो, यस्सदानि कालं मञ्ञसीऽति।

    ‘Evaṁ, bhaddantavā’ti kho, bhikkhave, mātali saṅgāhako sakkassa devānamindassa paṭissutvā, sahassayuttaṁ ājaññarathaṁ yojetvā sakkassa devānamindassa paṭivedesi: ‘yutto kho te, mārisa, sahassayutto ājaññaratho, yassadāni kālaṁ maññasī’ti.

    ‘Yes, lord,’ replied Mātali. He harnessed the chariot and informed Sakka, ‘Good sir, the chariot with its team of a thousand thoroughbreds has been harnessed. Please go at your convenience.’

    अथ खो, भिक्खवे, सक्को देवानमिन्दो वेजयन्तपासादा ओरोहन्तो अञ्जलिं कत्वा सुदं भिक्खुसङ्घं नमस्सति।

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo vejayantapāsādā orohanto añjaliṁ katvā sudaṁ bhikkhusaṅghaṁ namassati.

    Then Sakka descended from the Palace of Victory, raised his joined palms, and revered the bhikkhu Saṅgha.

    अथ खो, भिक्खवे, मातलि सङ्गाहको सक्कं देवानमिन्दं गाथाय अज्झभासि:

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, mātali saṅgāhako sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

    So Mātali the charioteer addressed Sakka in verse:

    ‘तञ्हि एते नमस्सेय्युं, पूतिदेहसया नरा; निमुग्गा कुणपम्हेते, खुप्पिपाससमप्पिता।

    ‘Tañhi ete namasseyyuṁ, pūtidehasayā narā; Nimuggā kuṇapamhete, khuppipāsasamappitā.

    ‘It’s these who should worship you, namely the humans stuck in their putrid bodies, sunk in a carcass, stricken by hunger and thirst.

    किं नु तेसं पिहयसि, अनागारान वासव; आचारं इसिनं ब्रूहि, तं सुणोम वचो तवाऽति।

    Kiṁ nu tesaṁ pihayasi, anāgārāna vāsava; Ācāraṁ isinaṁ brūhi, taṁ suṇoma vaco tavā’ti.

    Why then do you envy those who are homeless, Vāsava? Relate the seers’ way of life, let us hear what you say.’

    ‘एतं तेसं पिहयामि, अनागारान मातलि; यम्हा गामा पक्कमन्ति, अनपेक्खा वजन्ति ते।

    ‘Etaṁ tesaṁ pihayāmi, anāgārāna mātali; Yamhā gāmā pakkamanti, anapekkhā vajanti te.

    ‘This is why I envy the homeless, Mātali. When they leave a village, they proceed without concern.

    न तेसं कोट्ठे ओपेन्ति, न कुम्भि न कळोपियं; परनिट्ठितमेसाना, तेन यापेन्ति सुब्बता।

    Na tesaṁ koṭṭhe openti, na kumbhi1 na kaḷopiyaṁ; Paraniṭṭhitamesānā, tena yāpenti subbatā.

    They hoard no goods in storerooms, nor in pots or baskets. They seek food prepared by others, and, true to their vows, live on that.

    सुमन्तमन्तिनो धीरा, तुण्हीभूता समञ्चरा; देवा विरुद्धा असुरेहि, पुथु मच्चा च मातलि।

    Sumantamantino dhīrā, tuṇhībhūtā samañcarā; Devā viruddhā asurehi, puthu maccā ca mātali.

    The wise whose words are full of wisdom, live peacefully and quietly. Gods fight with demons, and mortals fight each other, Mātali.

    अविरुद्धा विरुद्धेसु, अत्तदण्डेसु निब्बुता; सादानेसु अनादाना, ते नमस्सामि मातलीऽति।

    Aviruddhā viruddhesu, attadaṇḍesu nibbutā; Sādānesu anādānā, te namassāmi mātalī’ti.

    Not fighting among those who fight, extinguished among those who are armed, not grasping among those who grasp: they’re who I worship, Mātali.’

    ‘सेट्ठा हि किर लोकस्मिं, ये त्वं सक्क नमस्ससि; अहम्पि ते नमस्सामि, ये नमस्ससि वासवाऽ”ति।

    ‘Seṭṭhā hi kira lokasmiṁ, ye tvaṁ sakka namassasi; Ahampi te namassāmi, ye namassasi vāsavā’”ti.

    ‘Those who you worship seem to be the best in the world, Sakka. I too will worship those who you worship, Vāsava.’

    इदं वत्वान मघवा, देवराजा सुजम्पति; भिक्खुसङ्घं नमस्सित्वा, पमुखो रथमारुहीति।

    Idaṁ vatvāna maghavā, devarājā sujampati; Bhikkhusaṅghaṁ namassitvā, pamukho rathamāruhīti.

    After saying this, Maghavā the chief, king of gods, Sujā’s husband, having worshipped the bhikkhu Saṅgha, climbed into his chariot.”

    दुतियो वग्गो।

    Dutiyo vaggo.

    तस्सुद्दानं

    Tassuddānaṁ

    देवा पन तयो वुत्ता, दलिद्दञ्च रामणेय्यकं; यजमानञ्च वन्दना, तयो सक्कनमस्सनाति।

    Devā pana2 tayo vuttā, daliddañca rāmaṇeyyakaṁ; Yajamānañca vandanā, tayo sakkanamassanāti.
