Not Knowing Perception
सावत्थिनिदानं।
Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.
एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो वच्छगोत्तो परिब्बाजको भगवन्तं एतदवोच:
Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho vacchagotto paribbājako bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then the wanderer Vacchagotta said to the Buddha:
“को नु खो, भो गोतम, हेतु, को पच्चयो, यानिमानि अनेकविहितानि दिट्ठिगतानि लोके उप्पज्जन्ति—सस्सतो लोकोति वा, असस्सतो लोकोति वा …पे… नेव होति न न होति तथागतो परं मरणाति वा”ति?
“ko nu kho, bho gotama, hetu, ko paccayo, yānimāni anekavihitāni diṭṭhigatāni loke uppajjanti—sassato lokoti vā, asassato lokoti vā …pe… neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇāti vā”ti?
“What is the cause, Master Gotama, what is the reason why these various misconceptions arise in the world? …”
“सञ्ञाय खो, वच्छ, अञ्ञाणा, सञ्ञासमुदये अञ्ञाणा, सञ्ञानिरोधे अञ्ञाणा, सञ्ञानिरोधगामिनिया पटिपदाय अञ्ञाणा; एवमिमानि अनेकविहितानि दिट्ठिगतानि लोके उप्पज्जन्ति—सस्सतो लोकोति वा, असस्सतो लोकोति वा …पे… नेव होति न न होति तथागतो परं मरणाति वाति। अयं खो, वच्छ, हेतु, अयं पच्चयो, यानिमानि अनेकविहितानि दिट्ठिगतानि लोके उप्पज्जन्ति—सस्सतो लोकोति वा, असस्सतो लोकोति वा …पे… नेव होति न न होति तथागतो परं मरणाति वा”ति।
“Saññāya kho, vaccha, aññāṇā, saññāsamudaye aññāṇā, saññānirodhe aññāṇā, saññānirodhagāminiyā paṭipadāya aññāṇā; evamimāni anekavihitāni diṭṭhigatāni loke uppajjanti—sassato lokoti vā, asassato lokoti vā …pe… neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇāti vāti. Ayaṁ kho, vaccha, hetu, ayaṁ paccayo, yānimāni anekavihitāni diṭṭhigatāni loke uppajjanti—sassato lokoti vā, asassato lokoti vā …pe… neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇāti vā”ti.
“Vaccha, it is because of not knowing perception, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation …”
