Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

Seated to one side, that bhikkhu said to the Buddha:

“ko nu kho, bhante, hetu, ko paccayo, yena midhekacco kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sāragandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ …pe… pheggugandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ … tacagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ … papaṭikagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ … pattagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ … pupphagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ … phalagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ … rasagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ … gandhagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjatī”ti?

“Sir, what is the cause, what is the reason why someone, when their body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the company of the gods of fairykind who live in fragrant heartwood … softwood … bark … sprouts … leaves … flowers … fruit … sap … fragrant scents?”

“Idha, bhikkhu, ekacco kāyena sucaritaṁ carati, vācāya sucaritaṁ carati, manasā sucaritaṁ carati. Tassa sutaṁ hoti: ‘sāragandhe adhivatthā devā dīghāyukā vaṇṇavanto sukhabahulā’ti. Tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘aho vatāhaṁ kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sāragandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ …pe… pheggugandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ … tacagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ … papaṭikagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ … pattagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ … pupphagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ … phalagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ … rasagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ … gandhagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjeyyan’ti. So dātā hoti sāragandhānaṁ …pe… so dātā hoti pheggugandhānaṁ … so dātā hoti tacagandhānaṁ … so dātā hoti papaṭikagandhānaṁ … so dātā hoti pattagandhānaṁ … so dātā hoti pupphagandhānaṁ … so dātā hoti phalagandhānaṁ … so dātā hoti rasagandhānaṁ … so dātā hoti gandhagandhānaṁ. So kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā gandhagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjati. Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhu, hetu, ayaṁ paccayo, yena midhekacco kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā gandhagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjatī”ti.

“Bhikkhu, it’s when someone does good things by way of body, speech, and mind. And they’ve heard: ‘The gods of fairykind who live in fragrant heartwood … fragrant scents are long-lived, beautiful, and very happy.’ They think: ‘If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the gods of fairykind who live in fragrant heartwood … fragrant scents!’ They give gifts of fragrant heartwood … fragrant scents. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in the company of the gods of fairykind who live in fragrant scents. This is the cause, this is the reason why someone, when their body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the company of the gods of fairykind who live on fragrant scents.”
