    Sātaccamūlakasappāyakārīsutta

    Persistence and What’s Conducive

    सावत्थिनिदानं।

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

    “चत्तारोमे, भिक्खवे, झायी। कतमे चत्तारो?

    “Cattārome, bhikkhave, jhāyī. Katame cattāro?

    “Bhikkhus, there are these four meditators. What four?

    इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो झायी समाधिस्मिं सातच्चकारी होति, न समाधिस्मिं सप्पायकारी।

    Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco jhāyī samādhismiṁ sātaccakārī hoti, na samādhismiṁ sappāyakārī.

    One meditator is skilled in practicing persistently for immersion but not in doing what’s conducive to it.

    इध पन, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो झायी समाधिस्मिं सप्पायकारी होति, न समाधिस्मिं सातच्चकारी।

    Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco jhāyī samādhismiṁ sappāyakārī hoti, na samādhismiṁ sātaccakārī.

    One meditator is skilled in doing what’s conducive to immersion but not in practicing persistently for it.

    इध पन, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो झायी नेव समाधिस्मिं सातच्चकारी होति, न च समाधिस्मिं सप्पायकारी।

    Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco jhāyī neva samādhismiṁ sātaccakārī hoti, na ca samādhismiṁ sappāyakārī.

    One meditator is skilled neither in practicing persistently for immersion nor in doing what’s conducive to it.

    इध पन, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो झायी समाधिस्मिं सातच्चकारी च होति, समाधिस्मिं सप्पायकारी च।

    Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco jhāyī samādhismiṁ sātaccakārī ca hoti, samādhismiṁ sappāyakārī ca.

    One meditator is skilled both in practicing persistently for immersion and in doing what’s conducive to it.

    तत्र, भिक्खवे, य्वायं झायी समाधिस्मिं सातच्चकारी च होति समाधिस्मिं सप्पायकारी च अयं इमेसं चतुन्नं झायीनं अग्गो च सेट्ठो च मोक्खो च उत्तमो च पवरो च।

    Tatra, bhikkhave, yvāyaṁ jhāyī samādhismiṁ sātaccakārī ca hoti samādhismiṁ sappāyakārī ca ayaṁ imesaṁ catunnaṁ jhāyīnaṁ aggo ca seṭṭho ca mokkho ca uttamo ca pavaro ca.

    Of these, the meditator skilled both in practicing persistently for immersion and in doing what’s conducive to it is the foremost, best, leading, highest, and finest of the four.

    सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, गवा खीरं, खीरम्हा दधि, दधिम्हा नवनीतं, नवनीतम्हा सप्पि, सप्पिम्हा सप्पिमण्डो तत्र अग्गमक्खायति;

    Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, gavā khīraṁ, khīramhā dadhi, dadhimhā navanītaṁ, navanītamhā sappi, sappimhā sappimaṇḍo tatra aggamakkhāyati;

    From a cow comes milk, from milk comes curds, from curds come butter, from butter comes ghee, and from ghee comes cream of ghee. And the cream of ghee is said to be the best of these.

    एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, य्वायं झायी समाधिस्मिं सातच्चकारी च होति, समाधिस्मिं सप्पायकारी च अयं इमेसं चतुन्नं झायीनं अग्गो च सेट्ठो च मोक्खो च उत्तमो च पवरो चा”ति।

    evameva kho, bhikkhave, yvāyaṁ jhāyī samādhismiṁ sātaccakārī ca hoti, samādhismiṁ sappāyakārī ca ayaṁ imesaṁ catunnaṁ jhāyīnaṁ aggo ca seṭṭho ca mokkho ca uttamo ca pavaro cā”ti.

    In the same way, the meditator skilled both in practicing persistently for immersion and in doing what’s conducive to it is the foremost, best, leading, highest, and finest of the four.”

    इदमवोच भगवा। अत्तमना ते भिक्खू भगवतो भासितं अभिनन्दुन्ति।

    Idamavoca bhagavā. Attamanā te bhikkhū bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandunti.

    That is what the Buddha said. Satisfied, the bhikkhus approved what the Buddha said.

    पञ्चपञ्ञासमं।

    Pañcapaññāsamaṁ.

    (यथा पञ्चपञ्ञासं वेय्याकरणानि होन्ति तथा वित्थारेतब्बानि।)

    (Yathā pañcapaññāsaṁ veyyākaraṇāni honti tathā vitthāretabbāni.)

    (All should be told in full as per the fifty-fifth discourse.)

    खन्धवग्गो ततियो।

    Khandhavaggo tatiyo.

    तस्सुद्दानं

    Tassuddānaṁ

    समाधि समापत्ति ठिति च, वुट्ठानं कल्लितारम्मणेन च; गोचरा अभिनीहारो सक्कच्च, सातच्च अथोपि सप्पायन्ति।

    Samādhi samāpatti ṭhiti ca, Vuṭṭhānaṁ kallitārammaṇena ca; Gocarā abhinīhāro sakkacca, Sātacca athopi sappāyanti.

    झानसंयुत्तं समत्तं।

    Jhānasaṁyuttaṁ samattaṁ.

    तस्सुद्दानं

    Tassuddānaṁ

    खन्ध राधसंयुत्तञ्च, दिट्ठिओक्कन्त उप्पादा; किलेस सारिपुत्ता च, नागा सुपण्ण गन्धब्बा; वलाह वच्छझानन्ति, खन्धवग्गम्हि तेरसाति।

    Khandha rādhasaṁyuttañca, diṭṭhiokkanta1 uppādā; Kilesa sāriputtā ca, nāgā supaṇṇa gandhabbā; Valāha vacchajhānanti, khandhavaggamhi terasāti.

    खन्धवग्गसंयुत्तपाळि निट्ठिता।

    Khandhavaggasaṁyuttapāḷi niṭṭhitā.
