    सावत्थिनिदानं।

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

    एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा राधो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:

    Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā rādho bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    Seated to one side, Venerable Rādha said to the Buddha:

    “‘सत्तो, सत्तोऽति, भन्ते, वुच्चति। कित्तावता नु खो, भन्ते, सत्तोति वुच्चती”ति?

    “‘satto, satto’ti, bhante, vuccati. Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, sattoti vuccatī”ti?

    “Sir, they speak of this thing called a ‘sentient being’. How is a sentient being defined?”

    “रूपे खो, राध, यो छन्दो यो रागो या नन्दी या तण्हा, तत्र सत्तो, तत्र विसत्तो, तस्मा सत्तोति वुच्चति। वेदनाय … सञ्ञाय … सङ्खारेसु … विञ्ञाणे यो छन्दो यो रागो या नन्दी या तण्हा, तत्र सत्तो, तत्र विसत्तो, तस्मा सत्तोति वुच्चति।

    “Rūpe kho, rādha, yo chando yo rāgo yā nandī yā taṇhā, tatra satto, tatra visatto, tasmā sattoti vuccati. Vedanāya … saññāya … saṅkhāresu … viññāṇe yo chando yo rāgo yā nandī yā taṇhā, tatra satto, tatra visatto, tasmā sattoti vuccati.

    “Rādha, when you cling, strongly cling, to desire, greed, relishing, and craving for form, then a being is spoken of. When you cling, strongly cling, to desire, greed, relishing, and craving for feeling … perception … choices … consciousness, then a being is spoken of.

    सेय्यथापि, राध, कुमारका वा कुमारिकायो वा पंस्वागारकेहि कीळन्ति। यावकीवञ्च तेसु पंस्वागारकेसु अविगतरागा होन्ति अविगतच्छन्दा अविगतपेमा अविगतपिपासा अविगतपरिळाहा अविगततण्हा, ताव तानि पंस्वागारकानि अल्लीयन्ति केळायन्ति धनायन्ति ममायन्ति। यतो च खो, राध, कुमारका वा कुमारिकायो वा तेसु पंस्वागारकेसु विगतरागा होन्ति विगतच्छन्दा विगतपेमा विगतपिपासा विगतपरिळाहा विगततण्हा, अथ खो तानि पंस्वागारकानि हत्थेहि च पादेहि च विकिरन्ति विधमन्ति विद्धंसेन्ति विकीळनियं करोन्ति।

    Seyyathāpi, rādha, kumārakā vā kumārikāyo vā paṁsvāgārakehi kīḷanti. Yāvakīvañca tesu paṁsvāgārakesu avigatarāgā honti avigatacchandā avigatapemā avigatapipāsā avigatapariḷāhā avigatataṇhā, tāva tāni paṁsvāgārakāni allīyanti keḷāyanti dhanāyanti1 mamāyanti. Yato ca kho, rādha, kumārakā vā kumārikāyo vā tesu paṁsvāgārakesu vigatarāgā honti vigatacchandā vigatapemā vigatapipāsā vigatapariḷāhā vigatataṇhā, atha kho tāni paṁsvāgārakāni hatthehi ca pādehi ca vikiranti vidhamanti viddhaṁsenti vikīḷaniyaṁ2 karonti.

    Suppose some boys or girls were playing with sandcastles. As long as they’re not rid of greed, desire, fondness, thirst, passion, and craving for those sandcastles, they cherish them, fancy them, treasure them, and treat them as their own. But when they are rid of greed, desire, fondness, thirst, passion, and craving for those sandcastles, they scatter, destroy, and demolish them with their hands and feet, making them unplayable.

    एवमेव खो, राध, तुम्हेपि रूपं विकिरथ विधमथ विद्धंसेथ विकीळनियं करोथ तण्हाक्खयाय पटिपज्जथ। वेदनं विकिरथ विधमथ विद्धंसेथ विकीळनियं करोथ तण्हाक्खयाय पटिपज्जथ। सञ्ञं … सङ्खारे विकिरथ विधमथ विद्धंसेथ विकीळनियं करोथ तण्हाक्खयाय पटिपज्जथ। विञ्ञाणं विकिरथ विधमथ विद्धंसेथ विकीळनियं करोथ तण्हाक्खयाय पटिपज्जथ। तण्हाक्खयो हि, राध, निब्बानन्”ति।

    Evameva kho, rādha, tumhepi rūpaṁ vikiratha vidhamatha viddhaṁsetha vikīḷaniyaṁ karotha taṇhākkhayāya paṭipajjatha. Vedanaṁ vikiratha vidhamatha viddhaṁsetha vikīḷaniyaṁ karotha taṇhākkhayāya paṭipajjatha. Saññaṁ … saṅkhāre vikiratha vidhamatha viddhaṁsetha vikīḷaniyaṁ karotha taṇhākkhayāya paṭipajjatha. Viññāṇaṁ vikiratha vidhamatha viddhaṁsetha vikīḷaniyaṁ karotha taṇhākkhayāya paṭipajjatha. Taṇhākkhayo hi, rādha, nibbānan”ti.

    In the same way, you should scatter, destroy, and demolish form, making it unplayable. And you should practice for the ending of craving. You should scatter, destroy, and demolish feeling … perception … choices … consciousness, making it unplayable. And you should practice for the ending of craving. For the ending of craving is Nibbana.”
