Sattisatasutta
A Hundred Spears
“सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, पुरिसो वस्ससतायुको वस्ससतजीवी। तमेनं एवं वदेय्य: ‘एहम्भो पुरिस, पुब्बण्हसमयं तं सत्तिसतेन हनिस्सन्ति, मज्झन्हिकसमयं सत्तिसतेन हनिस्सन्ति, सायन्हसमयं सत्तिसतेन हनिस्सन्ति। सो खो त्वं, अम्भो पुरिस, दिवसे दिवसे तीहि तीहि सत्तिसतेहि हञ्ञमानो वस्ससतायुको वस्ससतजीवी वस्ससतस्स अच्चयेन अनभिसमेतानि चत्तारि अरियसच्चानि अभिसमेस्ससीऽति।
“Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso vassasatāyuko vassasatajīvī. Tamenaṁ evaṁ vadeyya: ‘ehambho purisa, pubbaṇhasamayaṁ taṁ sattisatena hanissanti, majjhanhikasamayaṁ sattisatena hanissanti, sāyanhasamayaṁ sattisatena hanissanti. So kho tvaṁ, ambho purisa, divase divase tīhi tīhi sattisatehi haññamāno vassasatāyuko vassasatajīvī vassasatassa accayena anabhisametāni cattāri ariyasaccāni abhisamessasī’ti.
“Bhikkhus, suppose there was a man with a lifespan of a hundred years. And someone might say to him: ‘Come now, my good man, they’ll strike you with a hundred spears in the morning, at midday, and in the late afternoon. And you’ll live for a hundred years being struck with three hundred spears every day. But when a hundred years have passed, you will comprehend the four noble truths for the first time.’
अत्थवसिकेन, भिक्खवे, कुलपुत्तेन अलं उपगन्तुं।
Atthavasikena, bhikkhave, kulaputtena alaṁ upagantuṁ.
For an earnest gentleman this is sufficient reason to submit.
तं किस्स हेतु? अनमतग्गोयं, भिक्खवे, संसारो; पुब्बा कोटि नप्पञ्ञायति सत्तिप्पहारानं असिप्पहारानं उसुप्पहारानं फरसुप्पहारानं। एवञ्चेतं, भिक्खवे, अस्स। न खो पनाहं, भिक्खवे, सह दुक्खेन, सह दोमनस्सेन चतुन्नं अरियसच्चानं अभिसमयं वदामि; अपि चाहं, भिक्खवे, सहाव सुखेन, सहाव सोमनस्सेन चतुन्नं अरियसच्चानं अभिसमयं वदामि। कतमेसं चतुन्नं? दुक्खस्स अरियसच्चस्स …पे… दुक्खनिरोधगामिनिया पटिपदाय अरियसच्चस्स।
Taṁ kissa hetu? Anamataggoyaṁ, bhikkhave, saṁsāro; pubbā koṭi nappaññāyati sattippahārānaṁ asippahārānaṁ usuppahārānaṁ pharasuppahārānaṁ. Evañcetaṁ, bhikkhave, assa. Na kho panāhaṁ, bhikkhave, saha dukkhena, saha domanassena catunnaṁ ariyasaccānaṁ abhisamayaṁ vadāmi; api cāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sahāva sukhena, sahāva somanassena catunnaṁ ariyasaccānaṁ abhisamayaṁ vadāmi. Katamesaṁ catunnaṁ? Dukkhassa ariyasaccassa …pe… dukkhanirodhagāminiyā paṭipadāya ariyasaccassa.
Why is that? Transmigration has no known beginning. No first point is found of blows by spears, swords, arrows, and axes. Now this may be so. But the comprehension of the four noble truths doesn’t come with pain or sadness, I say. Rather, the comprehension of the four noble truths comes only with pleasure and happiness, I say. What four? The noble truths of suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.
तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति योगो करणीयो …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति योगो करणीयो”ति।
Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yogo karaṇīyo …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yogo karaṇīyo”ti.
That’s why you should practice meditation …”
