    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

Standing to one side, that deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

“Sattiyā viya omaṭṭho, ḍayhamānova matthake; Kāmarāgappahānāya, sato bhikkhu paribbaje”ti.

“Like they’re struck by a sword, like their head was on fire, a bhikkhu, mindful, should go forth, to give up sensual desire.”

“Sattiyā viya omaṭṭho, ḍayhamānova matthake; Sakkāyadiṭṭhippahānāya, sato bhikkhu paribbaje”ti.

“Like they’re struck by a sword, like their head was on fire, a bhikkhu, mindful, should go forth, to give up identity view.”
