In a Rosewood Forest
एकं समयं भगवा कोसम्बियं विहरति सीसपावने। अथ खो भगवा परित्तानि सीसपापण्णानि पाणिना गहेत्वा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “तं किं मञ्ञथ, भिक्खवे, कतमं नु खो बहुतरं—यानि वा मया परित्तानि सीसपापण्णानि पाणिना गहितानि यदिदं उपरि सीसपावने”ति?
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosambiyaṁ viharati sīsapāvane. Atha kho bhagavā parittāni sīsapāpaṇṇāni pāṇinā gahetvā bhikkhū āmantesi: “Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, katamaṁ nu kho bahutaraṁ—yāni vā mayā parittāni sīsapāpaṇṇāni pāṇinā gahitāni yadidaṁ upari sīsapāvane”ti?
At one time the Buddha was staying near Kosambī in a rosewood forest. Then the Buddha picked up a few rosewood leaves in his hand and addressed the bhikkhus: “What do you think, bhikkhus? Which is more: the few leaves in my hand, or those in the forest above me?”
“अप्पमत्तकानि, भन्ते, भगवता परित्तानि सीसपापण्णानि पाणिना गहितानि; अथ खो एतानेव बहुतरानि यदिदं उपरि सीसपावने”ति।
“Appamattakāni, bhante, bhagavatā parittāni sīsapāpaṇṇāni pāṇinā gahitāni; atha kho etāneva bahutarāni yadidaṁ upari sīsapāvane”ti.
“Sir, the few leaves in your hand are a tiny amount. There are far more leaves in the forest above.”
“एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, एतदेव बहुतरं यं वो मया अभिञ्ञाय अनक्खातं। कस्मा चेतं, भिक्खवे, मया अनक्खातं? न हेतं, भिक्खवे, अत्थसंहितं नादिब्रह्मचरियकं न निब्बिदाय न विरागाय न निरोधाय न उपसमाय न अभिञ्ञाय न सम्बोधाय न निब्बानाय संवत्तति; तस्मा तं मया अनक्खातं।
“Evameva kho, bhikkhave, etadeva bahutaraṁ yaṁ vo mayā abhiññāya anakkhātaṁ. Kasmā cetaṁ, bhikkhave, mayā anakkhātaṁ? Na hetaṁ, bhikkhave, atthasaṁhitaṁ nādibrahmacariyakaṁ na nibbidāya na virāgāya na nirodhāya na upasamāya na abhiññāya na sambodhāya na nibbānāya saṁvattati; tasmā taṁ mayā anakkhātaṁ.
“In the same way, there is much more that I have directly known but have not explained to you. What I have explained is a tiny amount. And why haven’t I explained it? Because it’s not beneficial or relevant to the fundamentals of the spiritual life. It doesn’t lead to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and Nibbana. That’s why I haven’t explained it.
किञ्च, भिक्खवे, मया अक्खातं? ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति, भिक्खवे, मया अक्खातं, ‘अयं दुक्खसमुदयोऽति मया अक्खातं, ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधोऽति मया अक्खातं, ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति मया अक्खातं।
Kiñca, bhikkhave, mayā akkhātaṁ? ‘Idaṁ dukkhan’ti, bhikkhave, mayā akkhātaṁ, ‘ayaṁ dukkhasamudayo’ti mayā akkhātaṁ, ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodho’ti mayā akkhātaṁ, ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti mayā akkhātaṁ.
And what have I explained? I have explained: ‘This is suffering’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’.
कस्मा चेतं, भिक्खवे, मया अक्खातं? एतञ्हि, भिक्खवे, अत्थसंहितं एतं आदिब्रह्मचरियकं एतं निब्बिदाय विरागाय निरोधाय उपसमाय अभिञ्ञाय सम्बोधाय निब्बानाय संवत्तति; तस्मा तं मया अक्खातं।
Kasmā cetaṁ, bhikkhave, mayā akkhātaṁ? Etañhi, bhikkhave, atthasaṁhitaṁ etaṁ ādibrahmacariyakaṁ etaṁ nibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya upasamāya abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattati; tasmā taṁ mayā akkhātaṁ.
And why have I explained this? Because it’s beneficial and relevant to the fundamentals of the spiritual life. It leads to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and Nibbana. That’s why I’ve explained it.
तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति योगो करणीयो …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति योगो करणीयो”ति।
Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yogo karaṇīyo …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yogo karaṇīyo”ti.
That’s why you should practice meditation …”
