    Victory by Good Speech

    सावत्थिनिदानं।

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

    “भूतपुब्बं, भिक्खवे, देवासुरसङ्गामो समुपब्यूळ्हो अहोसि।

    “Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, devāsurasaṅgāmo samupabyūḷho ahosi.

    “Once upon a time, bhikkhus, a battle was fought between the gods and the demons.

    अथ खो, भिक्खवे, वेपचित्ति असुरिन्दो सक्कं देवानमिन्दं एतदवोच: ‘होतु, देवानमिन्द, सुभासितेन जयोऽति।

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, vepacitti asurindo sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ etadavoca: ‘hotu, devānaminda, subhāsitena jayo’ti.

    Then Vepacitti, lord of demons, said to Sakka, lord of gods, ‘Lord of gods, let there be victory by fine words!’

    ‘होतु, वेपचित्ति, सुभासितेन जयोऽति।

    ‘Hotu, vepacitti, subhāsitena jayo’ti.

    ‘Vepacitti, let there be victory by fine words!’

    अथ खो, भिक्खवे, देवा च असुरा च पारिसज्जे ठपेसुं: ‘इमे नो सुभासितदुब्भासितं आजानिस्सन्तीऽति।

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, devā ca asurā ca pārisajje ṭhapesuṁ: ‘ime no subhāsitadubbhāsitaṁ ājānissantī’ti.

    Then the gods and the demons appointed a panel of judges, saying, ‘These will understand our good and bad statements.’

    अथ खो, भिक्खवे, वेपचित्ति असुरिन्दो सक्कं देवानमिन्दं एतदवोच: ‘भण, देवानमिन्द, गाथन्ऽति।

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, vepacitti asurindo sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ etadavoca: ‘bhaṇa, devānaminda, gāthan’ti.

    Then Vepacitti, lord of demons, said to Sakka, lord of gods, ‘Lord of gods, recite a verse!’

    एवं वुत्ते, भिक्खवे, सक्को देवानमिन्दो वेपचित्तिं असुरिन्दं एतदवोच: ‘तुम्हे ख्वेत्थ, वेपचित्ति, पुब्बदेवा। भण, वेपचित्ति, गाथन्ऽति।

    Evaṁ vutte, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo vepacittiṁ asurindaṁ etadavoca: ‘tumhe khvettha, vepacitti, pubbadevā. Bhaṇa, vepacitti, gāthan’ti.

    When he said this, Sakka said to him, ‘Vepacitti, you are the elder god here. Recite a verse.’

    एवं वुत्ते, भिक्खवे, वेपचित्ति असुरिन्दो इमं गाथं अभासि:

    Evaṁ vutte, bhikkhave, vepacitti asurindo imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

    So Vepacitti recited this verse:

    ‘भिय्यो बाला पभिज्जेय्युं, नो चस्स पटिसेधको; तस्मा भुसेन दण्डेन, धीरो बालं निसेधयेऽति।

    ‘Bhiyyo bālā pabhijjeyyuṁ, no cassa paṭisedhako; Tasmā bhusena daṇḍena, dhīro bālaṁ nisedhaye’ti.

    ‘Fools would vent even more if there’s no-one to put a stop to them. So an intelligent person should stop a fool with forceful punishment.’

    भासिताय खो पन, भिक्खवे, वेपचित्तिना असुरिन्देन गाथाय असुरा अनुमोदिंसु, देवा तुण्ही अहेसुं।

    Bhāsitāya kho pana, bhikkhave, vepacittinā asurindena gāthāya asurā anumodiṁsu, devā tuṇhī ahesuṁ.

    The demons applauded Vepacitti’s verse, while the gods kept silent.

    अथ खो, भिक्खवे, वेपचित्ति असुरिन्दो सक्कं देवानमिन्दं एतदवोच: ‘भण, देवानमिन्द, गाथन्ऽति। एवं वुत्ते, भिक्खवे, सक्को देवानमिन्दो इमं गाथं अभासि:

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, vepacitti asurindo sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ etadavoca: ‘bhaṇa, devānaminda, gāthan’ti. Evaṁ vutte, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

    Then Vepacitti said to Sakka, ‘Lord of gods, recite a verse!’ So Sakka recited this verse:

    ‘एतदेव अहं मञ्ञे, बालस्स पटिसेधनं; परं सङ्कुपितं ञत्वा, यो सतो उपसम्मतीऽति।

    ‘Etadeva ahaṁ maññe, bālassa paṭisedhanaṁ; Paraṁ saṅkupitaṁ ñatvā, yo sato upasammatī’ti.

    ‘I think that this is the only way to put a stop to a fool, when you know that the other is upset, be mindful and stay calm.’

    भासिताय खो पन, भिक्खवे, सक्केन देवानमिन्देन गाथाय, देवा अनुमोदिंसु, असुरा तुण्ही अहेसुं।

    Bhāsitāya kho pana, bhikkhave, sakkena devānamindena gāthāya, devā anumodiṁsu, asurā tuṇhī ahesuṁ.

    The gods applauded Sakka’s verse, while the demons kept silent.

    अथ खो, भिक्खवे, सक्को देवानमिन्दो वेपचित्तिं असुरिन्दं एतदवोच: ‘भण, वेपचित्ति, गाथन्ऽति। एवं वुत्ते, भिक्खवे, वेपचित्ति असुरिन्दो इमं गाथं अभासि:

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo vepacittiṁ asurindaṁ etadavoca: ‘bhaṇa, vepacitti, gāthan’ti. Evaṁ vutte, bhikkhave, vepacitti asurindo imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

    Then Sakka said to Vepacitti, ‘Vepacitti, recite a verse!’ So Vepacitti recited this verse:

    ‘एतदेव तितिक्खाय, वज्जं पस्सामि वासव; यदा नं मञ्ञति बालो, भया म्यायं तितिक्खति; अज्झारुहति दुम्मेधो, गोव भिय्यो पलायिनन्ऽति।

    ‘Etadeva titikkhāya, vajjaṁ passāmi vāsava; Yadā naṁ maññati bālo, bhayā myāyaṁ titikkhati; Ajjhāruhati dummedho, gova bhiyyo palāyinan’ti.

    ‘I see this fault, Vāsava, in just being patient. When a fool thinks, “He puts up with me out of fear,” the idiot will go after you even harder, like a cow chasing someone who runs away.’

    भासिताय खो पन, भिक्खवे, वेपचित्तिना असुरिन्देन गाथाय असुरा अनुमोदिंसु, देवा तुण्ही अहेसुं।

    Bhāsitāya kho pana, bhikkhave, vepacittinā asurindena gāthāya asurā anumodiṁsu, devā tuṇhī ahesuṁ.

    The demons applauded Vepacitti’s verse, while the gods kept silent.

    अथ खो, भिक्खवे, वेपचित्ति असुरिन्दो सक्कं देवानमिन्दं एतदवोच: ‘भण, देवानमिन्द, गाथन्ऽति। एवं वुत्ते, भिक्खवे, सक्को देवानमिन्दो इमा गाथायो अभासि:

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, vepacitti asurindo sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ etadavoca: ‘bhaṇa, devānaminda, gāthan’ti. Evaṁ vutte, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo imā gāthāyo abhāsi:

    Then Vepacitti said to Sakka, ‘Lord of gods, recite a verse!’ So Sakka recited this verse:

    ‘कामं मञ्ञतु वा मा वा, भया म्यायं तितिक्खति; सदत्थपरमा अत्था, खन्त्या भिय्यो न विज्जति।

    ‘Kāmaṁ maññatu vā mā vā, bhayā myāyaṁ titikkhati; Sadatthaparamā atthā, khantyā bhiyyo na vijjati.

    ‘Let him think this if he wishes, or not—“He puts up with me out of fear.” Of goals culminating in one’s own good, none better than patience is found.

    यो हवे बलवा सन्तो, दुब्बलस्स तितिक्खति; तमाहु परमं खन्तिं, निच्चं खमति दुब्बलो।

    Yo have balavā santo, dubbalassa titikkhati; Tamāhu paramaṁ khantiṁ, niccaṁ khamati dubbalo.

    When a strong person puts up with a weakling, they call that the ultimate patience, for a weakling must always be patient.

    अबलं तं बलं आहु, यस्स बालबलं बलं; बलस्स धम्मगुत्तस्स, पटिवत्ता न विज्जति।

    Abalaṁ taṁ balaṁ āhu, yassa bālabalaṁ balaṁ; Balassa dhammaguttassa, paṭivattā na vijjati.

    The strength of folly is really just weakness, they say. But no-one can challenge a person who’s strong, guarded by the teaching.

    तस्सेव तेन पापियो, यो कुद्धं पटिकुज्झति; कुद्धं अप्पटिकुज्झन्तो, सङ्गामं जेति दुज्जयं।

    Tasseva tena pāpiyo, yo kuddhaṁ paṭikujjhati; Kuddhaṁ appaṭikujjhanto, saṅgāmaṁ jeti dujjayaṁ.

    When you get angry at an angry person you just make things worse for yourself. When you don’t get angry at an angry person you win a battle hard to win.

    उभिन्नमत्थं चरति, अत्तनो च परस्स च; परं सङ्कुपितं ञत्वा, यो सतो उपसम्मति।

    Ubhinnamatthaṁ carati, attano ca parassa ca; Paraṁ saṅkupitaṁ ñatvā, yo sato upasammati.

    When you know that the other is angry, you act for the good of both yourself and the other if you’re mindful and stay calm.

    उभिन्नं तिकिच्छन्तानं, अत्तनो च परस्स च; जना मञ्ञन्ति बालोति, ये धम्मस्स अकोविदाऽति।

    Ubhinnaṁ tikicchantānaṁ, attano ca parassa ca; Janā maññanti bāloti, ye dhammassa akovidā’ti.

    People unfamiliar with the teaching consider one who heals both oneself and the other to be a fool.’

    भासितासु खो पन, भिक्खवे, सक्केन देवानमिन्देन गाथासु, देवा अनुमोदिंसु, असुरा तुण्ही अहेसुं।

    Bhāsitāsu kho pana, bhikkhave, sakkena devānamindena gāthāsu, devā anumodiṁsu, asurā tuṇhī ahesuṁ.

    The gods applauded Sakka’s verses, while the demons kept silent.

    अथ खो, भिक्खवे, देवानञ्च असुरानञ्च पारिसज्जा एतदवोचुं: ‘भासिता खो वेपचित्तिना असुरिन्देन गाथायो। ता च खो सदण्डावचरा ससत्थावचरा, इति भण्डनं इति विग्गहो इति कलहो। भासिता खो सक्केन देवानमिन्देन गाथायो। ता च खो अदण्डावचरा असत्थावचरा, इति अभण्डनं इति अविग्गहो इति अकलहो।

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, devānañca asurānañca pārisajjā etadavocuṁ: ‘bhāsitā kho vepacittinā asurindena gāthāyo. Tā ca kho sadaṇḍāvacarā sasatthāvacarā, iti bhaṇḍanaṁ iti viggaho iti kalaho. Bhāsitā kho1 sakkena devānamindena gāthāyo. Tā ca kho adaṇḍāvacarā asatthāvacarā, iti abhaṇḍanaṁ iti aviggaho iti akalaho.

    Then the panel of judges consisting of both gods and demons said this, ‘The verses spoken by Vepacitti evoke punishment and violence. That’s how you get arguments, quarrels, and disputes. The verses spoken by Sakka don’t evoke punishment and violence. That’s how you stay free of arguments, quarrels, and disputes.

    सक्कस्स देवानमिन्दस्स सुभासितेन जयोऽति।

    Sakkassa devānamindassa subhāsitena jayo’ti.

    Sakka, lord of gods, wins victory by fine words!’

    इति खो, भिक्खवे, सक्कस्स देवानमिन्दस्स सुभासितेन जयो अहोसी”ति।

    Iti kho, bhikkhave, sakkassa devānamindassa subhāsitena jayo ahosī”ti.

    And that’s how Sakka came to win victory by fine words.”
