    Well-Spoken Words

    सावत्थिनिदानं।

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

    तत्र खो भगवा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “भिक्खवो”ति।

    Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “bhikkhavo”ti.

    There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus, “Bhikkhus!”

    “भदन्ते”ति ते भिक्खू भगवतो पच्चस्सोसुं। भगवा एतदवोच:

    “Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ. Bhagavā etadavoca:

    “Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:

    “चतूहि, भिक्खवे, अङ्गेहि समन्नागता वाचा सुभासिता होति, नो दुब्भासिता; अनवज्जा च अननुवज्जा च विञ्ञूनं। कतमेहि चतूहि? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सुभासितंयेव भासति नो दुब्भासितं, धम्मंयेव भासति नो अधम्मं, पियंयेव भासति नो अप्पियं, सच्चंयेव भासति नो अलिकं। इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, चतूहि अङ्गेहि समन्नागता वाचा सुभासिता होति, नो दुब्भासिता, अनवज्जा च अननुवज्जा च विञ्ञूनन्”ति।

    “Catūhi, bhikkhave, aṅgehi samannāgatā vācā subhāsitā hoti, no dubbhāsitā; anavajjā ca ananuvajjā ca viññūnaṁ. Katamehi catūhi? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu subhāsitaṁyeva bhāsati no dubbhāsitaṁ, dhammaṁyeva bhāsati no adhammaṁ, piyaṁyeva bhāsati no appiyaṁ, saccaṁyeva bhāsati no alikaṁ. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, catūhi aṅgehi samannāgatā vācā subhāsitā hoti, no dubbhāsitā, anavajjā ca ananuvajjā ca viññūnan”ti.

    “Bhikkhus, speech that has four factors is well spoken, not poorly spoken. It’s blameless and is not criticized by sensible people. What four? It’s when a bhikkhu speaks well, not poorly; they speak on the teaching, not against the teaching; they speak pleasantly, not unpleasantly; and they speak truthfully, not falsely. Speech with these four factors is well spoken, not poorly spoken. It’s blameless and is not criticized by sensible people.”

    इदमवोच भगवा। इदं वत्वान सुगतो अथापरं एतदवोच सत्था:

    Idamavoca bhagavā. Idaṁ vatvāna sugato athāparaṁ etadavoca satthā:

    That is what the Buddha said. Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:

    “सुभासितं उत्तममाहु सन्तो, धम्मं भणे नाधम्मं तं दुतियं; पियं भणे नाप्पियं तं ततियं, सच्चं भणे नालिकं तं चतुत्थन्”ति।

    “Subhāsitaṁ uttamamāhu santo, Dhammaṁ bhaṇe nādhammaṁ taṁ dutiyaṁ; Piyaṁ bhaṇe nāppiyaṁ taṁ tatiyaṁ, Saccaṁ bhaṇe nālikaṁ taṁ catutthan”ti.

    “Good people say well-spoken words are foremost; second, speak on the teaching, not against it; third, speak pleasantly, not unpleasantly; and fourth, speak truthfully, not falsely.”

    अथ खो आयस्मा वङ्गीसो उट्ठायासना एकंसं उत्तरासङ्गं करित्वा येन भगवा तेनञ्जलिं पणामेत्वा भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “पटिभाति मं, भगवा, पटिभाति मं, सुगता”ति।

    Atha kho āyasmā vaṅgīso uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “paṭibhāti maṁ, bhagavā, paṭibhāti maṁ, sugatā”ti.

    Then Venerable Vaṅgīsa got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha, and said, “I feel inspired to speak, Blessed One! I feel inspired to speak, Holy One!”

    “पटिभातु तं, वङ्गीसा”ति भगवा अवोच।

    “Paṭibhātu taṁ, vaṅgīsā”ti bhagavā avoca.

    “Then speak as you feel inspired,” said the Buddha.

    अथ खो आयस्मा वङ्गीसो भगवन्तं सम्मुखा सारुप्पाहि गाथाहि अभित्थवि:

    Atha kho āyasmā vaṅgīso bhagavantaṁ sammukhā sāruppāhi gāthāhi abhitthavi:

    Then Vaṅgīsa extolled the Buddha in his presence with fitting verses:

    “तमेव वाचं भासेय्य, यायत्तानं न तापये; परे च न विहिंसेय्य, सा वे वाचा सुभासिता।

    “Tameva vācaṁ bhāseyya, yāyattānaṁ na tāpaye; Pare ca na vihiṁseyya, sā ve vācā subhāsitā.

    “Speak only such words as do not hurt yourself nor harm others; such speech is truly well spoken.

    पियवाचंव भासेय्य, या वाचा पटिनन्दिता; यं अनादाय पापानि, परेसं भासते पियं।

    Piyavācaṁva bhāseyya, yā vācā paṭinanditā; Yaṁ anādāya pāpāni, paresaṁ bhāsate piyaṁ.

    Speak only pleasing words, words gladly welcomed. Pleasing words are those that bring nothing bad to others.

    सच्चं वे अमता वाचा, एस धम्मो सनन्तनो; सच्चे अत्थे च धम्मे च, आहु सन्तो पतिट्ठिता।

    Saccaṁ ve amatā vācā, esa dhammo sanantano; Sacce atthe ca dhamme ca, āhu santo patiṭṭhitā.

    Truth itself is the undying word: this is an eternal truth. Good people say that the teaching and its meaning are grounded in the truth.

    यं बुद्धो भासते वाचं, खेमं निब्बानपत्तिया; दुक्खस्सन्तकिरियाय, सा वे वाचानमुत्तमा”ति।

    Yaṁ buddho bhāsate vācaṁ, khemaṁ nibbānapattiyā; Dukkhassantakiriyāya, sā ve vācānamuttamā”ti.

    The words spoken by the Buddha for finding the sanctuary, Nibbana, for making an end of suffering: this really is the best kind of speech.”
