    Sūcilomasutta

    With Spiky

    एकं समयं भगवा गयायं विहरति टङ्कितमञ्चे सूचिलोमस्स यक्खस्स भवने।

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā gayāyaṁ viharati ṭaṅkitamañce sūcilomassa yakkhassa bhavane.

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Gayā on the cut-stone ledge in the haunt of Spiky the native spirit.

    तेन खो पन समयेन खरो च यक्खो सूचिलोमो च यक्खो भगवतो अविदूरे अतिक्कमन्ति।

    Tena kho pana samayena kharo ca yakkho sūcilomo ca yakkho bhagavato avidūre atikkamanti.

    Now at that time the native spirits Shaggy and Spiky were passing by not far from the Buddha.

    अथ खो खरो यक्खो सूचिलोमं यक्खं एतदवोच: “एसो समणो”ति।

    Atha kho kharo yakkho sūcilomaṁ yakkhaṁ etadavoca: “eso samaṇo”ti.

    So Shaggy said to Spiky, “That’s an ascetic.”

    “नेसो समणो, समणको एसो। याव जानामि यदि वा सो समणो यदि वा पन सो समणको”ति।

    “Neso samaṇo, samaṇako eso. Yāva jānāmi yadi vā so samaṇo yadi vā pana so samaṇako”ti.

    “That’s no ascetic, he’s a faker! I’ll soon find out whether he’s an ascetic or a faker.”

    अथ खो सूचिलोमो यक्खो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवतो कायं उपनामेसि। अथ खो भगवा कायं अपनामेसि।

    Atha kho sūcilomo yakkho yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavato kāyaṁ upanāmesi. Atha kho bhagavā kāyaṁ apanāmesi.

    Then Spiky went up to the Buddha and leaned up against his body, but the Buddha pulled away.

    अथ खो सूचिलोमो यक्खो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “भायसि मं, समणा”ति?

    Atha kho sūcilomo yakkho bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “bhāyasi maṁ, samaṇā”ti?

    Then Spiky said to the Buddha, “Are you afraid, ascetic?”

    “न ख्वाहं तं, आवुसो, भायामि; अपि च ते सम्फस्सो पापको”ति।

    “Na khvāhaṁ taṁ, āvuso, bhāyāmi; api ca te samphasso pāpako”ti.

    “No, sir, I’m not afraid. But your touch is nasty.”

    “पञ्हं तं, समण, पुच्छिस्सामि। सचे मे न ब्याकरिस्ससि, चित्तं वा ते खिपिस्सामि, हदयं वा ते फालेस्सामि, पादेसु वा गहेत्वा पारगङ्गाय खिपिस्सामी”ति।

    “Pañhaṁ taṁ, samaṇa, pucchissāmi. Sace me na byākarissasi, cittaṁ vā te khipissāmi, hadayaṁ vā te phālessāmi, pādesu vā gahetvā pāragaṅgāya1 khipissāmī”ti.

    “I will ask you a question, ascetic. If you don’t answer me, I’ll drive you insane, or explode your heart, or grab you by the feet and throw you to the far shore of the Ganges!”

    “न ख्वाहं तं, आवुसो, पस्सामि सदेवके लोके समारके सब्रह्मके सस्समणब्राह्मणिया पजाय सदेवमनुस्साय, यो मे चित्तं वा खिपेय्य हदयं वा फालेय्य पादेसु वा गहेत्वा पारगङ्गाय खिपेय्य; अपि च त्वं, आवुसो, पुच्छ यदा कङ्खसी”ति। (…)

    “Na khvāhaṁ taṁ, āvuso, passāmi sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya, yo me cittaṁ vā khipeyya hadayaṁ vā phāleyya pādesu vā gahetvā pāragaṅgāya khipeyya; api ca tvaṁ, āvuso, puccha yadā kaṅkhasī”ti. (…)

    “I don’t see anyone in this world with its gods, Māras, and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans who could do that to me. But anyway, ask what you wish.”

    “रागो च दोसो च कुतोनिदाना, अरती रती लोमहंसो कुतोजा; कुतो समुट्ठाय मनोवितक्का, कुमारका धङ्कमिवोस्सजन्ती”ति।

    “Rāgo ca doso ca kutonidānā, Aratī ratī lomahaṁso kutojā; Kuto samuṭṭhāya manovitakkā, Kumārakā dhaṅkamivossajantī”ti.

    “Where do greed and hate come from? From where spring discontent, desire, and terror? Where do the mind’s thoughts originate, like a crow let loose by boys.”

    “रागो च दोसो च इतोनिदाना, अरती रती लोमहंसो इतोजा; इतो समुट्ठाय मनोवितक्का, कुमारका धङ्कमिवोस्सजन्ति।

    “Rāgo ca doso ca itonidānā, Aratī ratī lomahaṁso itojā; Ito samuṭṭhāya manovitakkā, Kumārakā dhaṅkamivossajanti.

    “Greed and hate come from here; from here spring discontent, desire, and terror; here’s where the mind’s thoughts originate, like a crow let loose by boys.

    स्नेहजा अत्तसम्भूता, निग्रोधस्सेव खन्धजा; पुथू विसत्ता कामेसु, मालुवाव वितता वने।

    Snehajā attasambhūtā, nigrodhasseva khandhajā; Puthū visattā kāmesu, māluvāva vitatā2 vane.

    Born of affection, originating in oneself, like the shoots from a banyan’s trunk; the many kinds of attachment to sensual pleasures are like camel’s foot creeper creeping through the woods.

    ये नं पजानन्ति यतोनिदानं, ते नं विनोदेन्ति सुणोहि यक्ख; ते दुत्तरं ओघमिमं तरन्ति, अतिण्णपुब्बं अपुनब्भवाया”ति।

    Ye naṁ pajānanti yatonidānaṁ, Te naṁ vinodenti suṇohi yakkha; Te duttaraṁ oghamimaṁ taranti, Atiṇṇapubbaṁ apunabbhavāyā”ti.

    Those who understand where they come from get rid of them—listen up, spirit! They cross this flood so hard to cross, not crossed before, so as to not be reborn.”
