एकं समयं भगवा राजगहे विहरति सीतवने।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati sītavane.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha in the Cool Grove.
तेन खो पन समयेन अनाथपिण्डिको गहपति राजगहं अनुप्पत्तो होति केनचिदेव करणीयेन। अस्सोसि खो अनाथपिण्डिको गहपति: “बुद्धो किर लोके उप्पन्नो”ति।
Tena kho pana samayena anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati rājagahaṁ anuppatto hoti kenacideva karaṇīyena. Assosi kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati: “buddho kira loke uppanno”ti.
Now at that time the householder Anāthapiṇḍika had arrived at Rājagaha on some business. He heard a rumor that a Buddha had arisen in the world.
तावदेव च पन भगवन्तं दस्सनाय उपसङ्कमितुकामो होति। अथस्स अनाथपिण्डिकस्स गहपतिस्स एतदहोसि: “अकालो खो अज्ज भगवन्तं दस्सनाय उपसङ्कमितुं। स्वे दानाहं कालेन भगवन्तं दस्सनाय गमिस्सामी”ति बुद्धगताय सतिया निपज्जि।
Tāvadeva ca pana bhagavantaṁ dassanāya upasaṅkamitukāmo hoti. Athassa anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa etadahosi: “akālo kho ajja bhagavantaṁ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṁ. Sve dānāhaṁ kālena bhagavantaṁ dassanāya gamissāmī”ti buddhagatāya satiyā nipajji.
Right away he wanted to go and see the Buddha, but he thought, “It’s too late to go and see the Buddha today. I’ll go and see him tomorrow.” He went to bed thinking of the Buddha.
रत्तिया सुदं तिक्खत्तुं वुट्ठासि पभातन्ति मञ्ञमानो। अथ खो अनाथपिण्डिको गहपति येन सिवथिकद्वारं तेनुपसङ्कमि। अमनुस्सा द्वारं विवरिंसु।
Rattiyā sudaṁ tikkhattuṁ vuṭṭhāsi pabhātanti maññamāno. Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati yena sivathikadvāraṁ1 tenupasaṅkami. Amanussā dvāraṁ vivariṁsu.
During the night he got up three times thinking it was morning. Then he approached the Sivaka Gate, and non-human beings opened it for him.
अथ खो अनाथपिण्डिकस्स गहपतिस्स नगरम्हा निक्खमन्तस्स आलोको अन्तरधायि, अन्धकारो पातुरहोसि, भयं छम्भितत्तं लोमहंसो उदपादि, ततोव पुन निवत्तितुकामो अहोसि।
Atha kho anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa nagaramhā nikkhamantassa āloko antaradhāyi, andhakāro pāturahosi, bhayaṁ chambhitattaṁ lomahaṁso udapādi, tatova puna nivattitukāmo ahosi.
But as he was leaving the city, light vanished and darkness appeared to him. He felt fear, terror, and goosebumps, and wanted to turn back.
अथ खो सिवको यक्खो अन्तरहितो सद्दमनुस्सावेसि:
Atha kho sivako2 yakkho antarahito saddamanussāvesi:
Then the invisible spirit Sivaka called out:
“सतं हत्थी सतं अस्सा, सतं अस्सतरीरथा; सतं कञ्ञासहस्सानि, आमुक्कमणिकुण्डला; एकस्स पदवीतिहारस्स, कलं नाग्घन्ति सोळसिं।
“Sataṁ hatthī sataṁ assā, Sataṁ assatarīrathā; Sataṁ kaññāsahassāni, Āmukkamaṇikuṇḍalā; Ekassa padavītihārassa, Kalaṁ nāgghanti soḷasiṁ.
“A hundred elephants, a hundred horses, a hundred mule-drawn chariots, a hundred thousand maidens bedecked with jeweled earrings: these are not worth a sixteenth part of a single forward stride!
अभिक्कम गहपति, अभिक्कम गहपति; अभिक्कमनं ते सेय्यो, नो पटिक्कमनन्”ति।
Abhikkama gahapati, abhikkama gahapati; Abhikkamanaṁ te seyyo, no paṭikkamanan”ti.
Forward, householder! Forward, householder! Going forward is better for you, not turning back!”
अथ खो अनाथपिण्डिकस्स गहपतिस्स अन्धकारो अन्तरधायि, आलोको पातुरहोसि, यं अहोसि भयं छम्भितत्तं लोमहंसो, सो पटिप्पस्सम्भि।
Atha kho anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa andhakāro antaradhāyi, āloko pāturahosi, yaṁ ahosi bhayaṁ chambhitattaṁ lomahaṁso, so paṭippassambhi.
Then darkness vanished and light appeared to Anāthapiṇḍika. His fear, terror, and goosebumps settled down.
दुतियम्पि खो अनाथपिण्डिकस्स गहपतिस्स आलोको अन्तरधायि, अन्धकारो पातुरहोसि, भयं छम्भितत्तं लोमहंसो उदपादि, ततोव पुन निवत्तितुकामो अहोसि।
Dutiyampi kho anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa āloko antaradhāyi, andhakāro pāturahosi, bhayaṁ chambhitattaṁ lomahaṁso udapādi, tatova puna nivattitukāmo ahosi.
But for a second time, light vanished and darkness appeared to him. …
दुतियम्पि खो सिवको यक्खो अन्तरहितो सद्दमनुस्सावेसि:
Dutiyampi kho sivako yakkho antarahito saddamanussāvesi:
For a second time the invisible spirit Sivaka called out …
“सतं हत्थी सतं अस्सा, …पे… कलं नाग्घन्ति सोळसिं।
“Sataṁ hatthī sataṁ assā, …pe… Kalaṁ nāgghanti soḷasiṁ.
अभिक्कम गहपति, अभिक्कम गहपति; अभिक्कमनं ते सेय्यो, नो पटिक्कमनन्”ति।
Abhikkama gahapati, abhikkama gahapati; Abhikkamanaṁ te seyyo, no paṭikkamanan”ti.

Tatiyampi kho anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa āloko antaradhāyi, andhakāro pāturahosi, bhayaṁ chambhitattaṁ lomahaṁso udapādi, tatova puna nivattitukāmo ahosi.
But for a third time, light vanished and darkness appeared to him. …

अथ खो अनाथपिण्डिकस्स गहपतिस्स अन्धकारो अन्तरधायि, आलोको पातुरहोसि, यं अहोसि भयं छम्भितत्तं लोमहंसो, सो पटिप्पस्सम्भि। अथ खो अनाथपिण्डिको गहपति येन सीतवनं येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि।
Atha kho anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa andhakāro antaradhāyi, āloko pāturahosi, yaṁ ahosi bhayaṁ chambhitattaṁ lomahaṁso, so paṭippassambhi. Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati yena sītavanaṁ yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami.
Then darkness vanished and light appeared to Anāthapiṇḍika. His fear, terror, and goosebumps settled down. Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika went to the Cool Grove and approached the Buddha.
तेन खो पन समयेन भगवा रत्तिया पच्चूससमयं पच्चुट्ठाय अब्भोकासे चङ्कमति। अद्दसा खो भगवा अनाथपिण्डिकं गहपतिं दूरतोव आगच्छन्तं। दिस्वान चङ्कमा ओरोहित्वा पञ्ञत्ते आसने निसीदि। निसज्ज खो भगवा अनाथपिण्डिकं गहपतिं एतदवोच: “एहि, सुदत्ता”ति।
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā rattiyā paccūsasamayaṁ paccuṭṭhāya abbhokāse caṅkamati. Addasā kho bhagavā anāthapiṇḍikaṁ gahapatiṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ. Disvāna caṅkamā orohitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. Nisajja kho bhagavā anāthapiṇḍikaṁ gahapatiṁ etadavoca: “ehi, sudattā”ti.
Now at that time the Buddha had risen at the crack of dawn and was walking mindfully in the open. He saw Anāthapiṇḍika coming off in the distance. So he stepped down from the walking path, sat down on the seat spread out, and said to Anāthapiṇḍika, “Come, Sudatta.”
अथ खो अनाथपिण्डिको गहपति, नामेन मं भगवा आलपतीति, हट्ठो उदग्गो तत्थेव भगवतो पादेसु सिरसा निपतित्वा भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “कच्चि, भन्ते, भगवा सुखमसयित्था”ति?
Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati, nāmena maṁ bhagavā ālapatīti, haṭṭho udaggo tattheva bhagavato pādesu sirasā nipatitvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “kacci, bhante, bhagavā sukhamasayitthā”ti?
Then Anāthapiṇḍika thought, “The Buddha calls me by name!” Smiling and elated, he bowed with his head at the Buddha’s feet and said to him, “Sir, I trust the Buddha slept well?”
“सब्बदा वे सुखं सेति, ब्राह्मणो परिनिब्बुतो; यो न लिम्पति कामेसु, सीतिभूतो निरूपधि।
“Sabbadā ve sukhaṁ seti, brāhmaṇo parinibbuto; Yo na limpati kāmesu, sītibhūto nirūpadhi.
“A brahmin who is fully extinguished always sleeps at ease. Sensual pleasures slip off them, they’re cooled, free of attachments.
सब्बा आसत्तियो छेत्वा, विनेय्य हदये दरं; उपसन्तो सुखं सेति, सन्तिं पप्पुय्य चेतसा”ति।
Sabbā āsattiyo chetvā, vineyya hadaye daraṁ; Upasanto sukhaṁ seti, santiṁ pappuyya cetasā”ti.
Since they’ve cut off all clinging, and removed the stress from the heart, the peaceful sleep at ease, having found peace of mind.”
