एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे …पे… भगवा एतदवोच:
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme …pe… bhagavā etadavoca:
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. … The Buddha said this:
“गन्धब्बकायिके वो, भिक्खवे, देवे देसेस्सामि। तं सुणाथ।
“gandhabbakāyike vo, bhikkhave, deve desessāmi. Taṁ suṇātha.
“Bhikkhus, I will teach you about the gods of fairykind. Listen …
कतमा च, भिक्खवे, गन्धब्बकायिका देवा? सन्ति, भिक्खवे, मूलगन्धे अधिवत्था देवा। सन्ति, भिक्खवे, सारगन्धे अधिवत्था देवा। सन्ति, भिक्खवे, फेग्गुगन्धे अधिवत्था देवा। सन्ति, भिक्खवे, तचगन्धे अधिवत्था देवा। सन्ति, भिक्खवे, पपटिकगन्धे अधिवत्था देवा। सन्ति, भिक्खवे, पत्तगन्धे अधिवत्था देवा। सन्ति, भिक्खवे, पुप्फगन्धे अधिवत्था देवा। सन्ति, भिक्खवे, फलगन्धे अधिवत्था देवा। सन्ति, भिक्खवे, रसगन्धे अधिवत्था देवा। सन्ति, भिक्खवे, गन्धगन्धे अधिवत्था देवा। इमे वुच्चन्ति, भिक्खवे, गन्धब्बकायिका देवा”ति।
Katamā ca, bhikkhave, gandhabbakāyikā devā? Santi, bhikkhave, mūlagandhe adhivatthā devā. Santi, bhikkhave, sāragandhe adhivatthā devā. Santi, bhikkhave, pheggugandhe adhivatthā devā. Santi, bhikkhave, tacagandhe adhivatthā devā. Santi, bhikkhave, papaṭikagandhe adhivatthā devā. Santi, bhikkhave, pattagandhe adhivatthā devā. Santi, bhikkhave, pupphagandhe adhivatthā devā. Santi, bhikkhave, phalagandhe adhivatthā devā. Santi, bhikkhave, rasagandhe adhivatthā devā. Santi, bhikkhave, gandhagandhe adhivatthā devā. Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, gandhabbakāyikā devā”ti.
And what are the gods of fairykind? There are gods who live in fragrant roots, fragrant heartwood, fragrant softwood, fragrant bark, fragrant shoots, fragrant leaves, fragrant flowers, fragrant fruit, fragrant sap, and fragrant scents. These are called the gods of fairykind.”
