    A Question About Craving

    “‘तण्हा, तण्हाऽति, आवुसो सारिपुत्त, वुच्चति। कतमा नु खो, आवुसो, तण्हा”ति?

    “‘Taṇhā, taṇhā’ti, āvuso sāriputta, vuccati. Katamā nu kho, āvuso, taṇhā”ti?

    “Friend Sāriputta, they speak of this thing called ‘craving’. What is craving?”

    “तिस्सो इमा, आवुसो, तण्हा। कामतण्हा, भवतण्हा, विभवतण्हा—इमा खो, आवुसो, तिस्सो तण्हा”ति।

    “Tisso imā, āvuso, taṇhā. Kāmataṇhā, bhavataṇhā, vibhavataṇhā—imā kho, āvuso, tisso taṇhā”ti.

    “Friend, there are these three cravings. Craving for sensual pleasures, craving to continue existence, and craving to end existence. These are the three cravings.”

    “अत्थि पनावुसो, मग्गो अत्थि पटिपदा, एतासं तण्हानं पहानाया”ति?

    “Atthi panāvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā, etāsaṁ taṇhānaṁ pahānāyā”ti?

    “But, friend, is there a path and a practice for completely understanding these cravings?”

    “अत्थि खो, आवुसो, मग्गो अत्थि पटिपदा, एतासं तण्हानं पहानाया”ति।

    “Atthi kho, āvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā, etāsaṁ taṇhānaṁ pahānāyā”ti.

    “There is.” …

    “कतमो पनावुसो, मग्गो कतमा पटिपदा, एतासं तण्हानं पहानाया”ति? “अयमेव खो, आवुसो, अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो, एतासं तण्हानं पहानाय, सेय्यथिदं—सम्मादिट्ठि …पे… सम्मासमाधि। अयं खो, आवुसो, मग्गो अयं पटिपदा, एतासं तण्हानं पहानाया”ति। “भद्दको, आवुसो, मग्गो भद्दिका पटिपदा, एतासं तण्हानं पहानाय। अलञ्च पनावुसो सारिपुत्त, अप्पमादाया”ति।

    “Katamo panāvuso, maggo katamā paṭipadā, etāsaṁ taṇhānaṁ pahānāyā”ti? “Ayameva kho, āvuso, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, etāsaṁ taṇhānaṁ pahānāya, seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi. Ayaṁ kho, āvuso, maggo ayaṁ paṭipadā, etāsaṁ taṇhānaṁ pahānāyā”ti. “Bhaddako, āvuso, maggo bhaddikā paṭipadā, etāsaṁ taṇhānaṁ pahānāya. Alañca panāvuso sāriputta, appamādāyā”ti.
