Craving

“तिस्सो इमा, भिक्खवे, तण्हा। कतमा तिस्सो? कामतण्हा, भवतण्हा, विभवतण्हा—इमा खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सो तण्हा।

“Tisso imā, bhikkhave, taṇhā. Katamā tisso? Kāmataṇhā, bhavataṇhā, vibhavataṇhā—imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso taṇhā.

“Bhikkhus, there are these three cravings. What three? Craving for sensual pleasures, craving to continue existence, and craving to end existence. These are the three cravings.

इमासं खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सन्नं तण्हानं अभिञ्ञाय परिञ्ञाय परिक्खयाय पहानाय …पे… अयं अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो भावेतब्बो। कतमो अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सम्मादिट्ठिं भावेति विवेकनिस्सितं विरागनिस्सितं निरोधनिस्सितं वोस्सग्गपरिणामिं …पे… सम्मासमाधिं भावेति विवेकनिस्सितं विरागनिस्सितं निरोधनिस्सितं वोस्सग्गपरिणामिं।

Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ taṇhānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya …pe… ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo. Katamo ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sammādiṭṭhiṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ …pe… sammāsamādhiṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ.

The noble eightfold path should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these three cravings. What is the noble eightfold path? It’s when a bhikkhu develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.

इमासं खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सन्नं तण्हानं अभिञ्ञाय परिञ्ञाय परिक्खयाय पहानाय …पे… अयं अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो भावेतब्बो”ति।

Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ taṇhānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya …pe… ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo”ti.

This is the noble eightfold path that should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these three cravings.”

Tasināsutta

Thirst

“तिस्सो इमा, भिक्खवे, तसिना। कतमा तिस्सो? कामतसिना, भवतसिना, विभवतसिना।

“Tisso imā, bhikkhave, tasinā. Katamā tisso? Kāmatasinā, bhavatasinā, vibhavatasinā.

“Bhikkhus, there are these three thirsts. What three? Thirst for sensual pleasures, thirst to continue existence, and thirst to end existence.

इमासं खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सन्नं तसिनानं अभिञ्ञाय परिञ्ञाय परिक्खयाय पहानाय …पे…। रागविनयपरियोसानं दोसविनयपरियोसानं मोहविनयपरियोसानं …पे… अमतोगधं अमतपरायनं अमतपरियोसानं …पे… निब्बाननिन्नं निब्बानपोणं निब्बानपब्भारं।

Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ tasinānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya …pe…. rāgavinayapariyosānaṁ dosavinayapariyosānaṁ mohavinayapariyosānaṁ …pe… amatogadhaṁ amataparāyanaṁ amatapariyosānaṁ …pe… nibbānaninnaṁ nibbānapoṇaṁ nibbānapabbhāraṁ.

For the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these three thirsts … … which culminates in the removal of greed, hate, and delusion. … which culminates, finishes, and ends in the deathless. … which slants, slopes, and inclines to Nibbana.

इमासं खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सन्नं तसिनानं अभिञ्ञाय परिञ्ञाय परिक्खयाय पहानाय …पे… अयं अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो भावेतब्बो”ति।

Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ tasinānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya …pe… ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo”ti.

तस्सुद्दानं

Tassuddānaṁ

एसना विधा आसवो, भवो च दुक्खता खिला; मलं नीघो च वेदना, द्वे तण्हा तसिनाय चाति।

Esanā vidhā āsavo, bhavo ca dukkhatā khilā; Malaṁ nīgho ca vedanā, dve taṇhā tasināya cāti.
