    सावत्थियं विहरति।

    Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

    At Sāvatthī.

    “यञ्च, भिक्खवे, चेतेति यञ्च पकप्पेति यञ्च अनुसेति आरम्मणमेतं होति विञ्ञाणस्स ठितिया। आरम्मणे सति पतिट्ठा विञ्ञाणस्स होति। तस्मिं पतिट्ठिते विञ्ञाणे विरूळ्हे नति होति। नतिया सति आगतिगति होति। आगतिगतिया सति चुतूपपातो होति। चुतूपपाते सति आयतिं जाति जरामरणं सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा सम्भवन्ति। एवमेतस्स केवलस्स दुक्खक्खन्धस्स समुदयो होति।

    “Yañca, bhikkhave, ceteti yañca pakappeti yañca anuseti ārammaṇametaṁ hoti viññāṇassa ṭhitiyā. Ārammaṇe sati patiṭṭhā viññāṇassa hoti. Tasmiṁ patiṭṭhite viññāṇe virūḷhe nati hoti. Natiyā sati āgatigati hoti. Āgatigatiyā sati cutūpapāto hoti. Cutūpapāte sati āyatiṁ jāti jarāmaraṇaṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā sambhavanti. Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti.

    “Bhikkhus, what you intend or plan, and what you have underlying tendencies for become a support for the continuation of consciousness. When this support exists, consciousness becomes established. When consciousness is established and grows, there is an inclination. When there is an inclination, there is coming and going. When there is coming and going, there is passing away and reappearing. When there is passing away and reappearing, future rebirth, old age, and death come to be, as do sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.

Natiyā sati āgatigati hoti. Āgatigatiyā sati cutūpapāto hoti. Cutūpapāte sati āyatiṁ jāti jarāmaraṇaṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā sambhavanti.     If you don’t intend or plan, but still have underlying tendencies, this becomes a support for the continuation of consciousness. When this support exists, consciousness becomes established. When consciousness is established and grows, there is an inclination. When there is an inclination, there is coming and going. When there is coming and going, there is passing away and reappearing. When there is passing away and reappearing, future rebirth, old age, and death come to be, as do sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.

    यतो च खो, भिक्खवे, नो चेव चेतेति नो च पकप्पेति नो च अनुसेति, आरम्मणमेतं न होति विञ्ञाणस्स ठितिया। आरम्मणे असति पतिट्ठा विञ्ञाणस्स न होति। तदप्पतिट्ठिते विञ्ञाणे अविरूळ्हे नति न होति। नतिया असति आगतिगति न होति। आगतिगतिया असति चुतूपपातो न होति। चुतूपपाते असति आयतिं जाति जरामरणं सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा निरुज्झन्ति। एवमेतस्स केवलस्स दुक्खक्खन्धस्स निरोधो होती”ति।

    Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, no ceva ceteti no ca pakappeti no ca anuseti, ārammaṇametaṁ na hoti viññāṇassa ṭhitiyā. Ārammaṇe asati patiṭṭhā viññāṇassa na hoti. Tadappatiṭṭhite viññāṇe avirūḷhe nati na hoti. Natiyā asati āgatigati na hoti. Āgatigatiyā asati cutūpapāto na hoti. Cutūpapāte asati āyatiṁ jāti jarāmaraṇaṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā nirujjhanti. Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hotī”ti.

    If you don’t intend or plan or have underlying tendencies, this doesn’t become a support for the continuation of consciousness. With no support, consciousness is not established. When consciousness is not established and doesn’t grow, there’s no inclination. When there’s no inclination, there’s no coming and going. When there’s no coming and going, there’s no passing away and reappearing. When there’s no passing away and reappearing, future rebirth, old age, and death cease, as do sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.”

    कळारखत्तियवग्गो चतुत्थो।

    Kaḷārakhattiyavaggo catuttho.

    तस्सुद्दानं

    Tassuddānaṁ

    भूतमिदं कळारञ्च, दुवे च ञाणवत्थूनि; अविज्जापच्चया च द्वे, नतुम्हा चेतना तयोति।

    Bhūtamidaṁ kaḷārañca, duve ca ñāṇavatthūni; Avijjāpaccayā ca dve, natumhā cetanā tayoti.
