एकं समयं भगवा राजगहे विहरति वेळुवने कलन्दकनिवापे। तेन खो पन समयेन भगवा आबाधिको होति दुक्खितो बाळ्हगिलानो। अथ खो आयस्मा महाचुन्दो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो आयस्मन्तं महाचुन्दं भगवा एतदवोच:
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe. Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā ābādhiko hoti dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. Atha kho āyasmā mahācundo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ mahācundaṁ bhagavā etadavoca:
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground. Now at that time he was sick, suffering, gravely ill. Then Venerable Mahācunda went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“पटिभन्तु तं, चुन्द, बोज्झङ्गा”ति।
“paṭibhantu taṁ, cunda, bojjhaṅgā”ti.
“Cunda, express your understanding of the awakening factors.”
“सत्तिमे, भन्ते, बोज्झङ्गा भगवता सम्मदक्खाता भाविता बहुलीकता अभिञ्ञाय सम्बोधाय निब्बानाय संवत्तन्ति। कतमे सत्त? सतिसम्बोज्झङ्गो खो, भन्ते, भगवता सम्मदक्खातो भावितो बहुलीकतो अभिञ्ञाय सम्बोधाय निब्बानाय संवत्तति …पे… उपेक्खासम्बोज्झङ्गो खो, भन्ते, भगवता सम्मदक्खातो भावितो बहुलीकतो अभिञ्ञाय सम्बोधाय निब्बानाय संवत्तति। इमे खो, भन्ते, सत्त बोज्झङ्गा भगवता सम्मदक्खाता भाविता बहुलीकता अभिञ्ञाय सम्बोधाय निब्बानाय संवत्तन्ती”ति।
“Sattime, bhante, bojjhaṅgā bhagavatā sammadakkhātā bhāvitā bahulīkatā abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattanti. Katame satta? Satisambojjhaṅgo kho, bhante, bhagavatā sammadakkhāto bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattati …pe… upekkhāsambojjhaṅgo kho, bhante, bhagavatā sammadakkhāto bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattati. Ime kho, bhante, satta bojjhaṅgā bhagavatā sammadakkhātā bhāvitā bahulīkatā abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattantī”ti.
“Sir, the Buddha has rightly explained these seven awakening factors. When developed and cultivated, they lead to direct knowledge, to awakening, and to Nibbana. What seven? The awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, and equanimity. These are the seven awakening factors that the Buddha has rightly explained. When developed and cultivated, they lead to direct knowledge, to awakening, and to Nibbana.”
“तग्घ, चुन्द, बोज्झङ्गा; तग्घ, चुन्द, बोज्झङ्गा”ति।
“Taggha, cunda, bojjhaṅgā; taggha, cunda, bojjhaṅgā”ti.
“Indeed, Cunda, these are awakening factors! Indeed, Cunda, these are awakening factors!”
इदमवोचायस्मा चुन्दो। समनुञ्ञो सत्था अहोसि। वुट्ठहि च भगवा तम्हा आबाधा। तथापहीनो च भगवतो सो आबाधो अहोसीति।
Idamavocāyasmā cundo. Samanuñño satthā ahosi. Vuṭṭhahi ca bhagavā tamhā ābādhā. Tathāpahīno ca bhagavato so ābādho ahosīti.
This is what Cunda said, and the teacher approved. And that’s how the Buddha recovered from that illness.
