तञ्ञेव निदानं। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो आयस्मन्तं महाकोट्ठिकं एतदवोच:
Taññeva nidānaṁ. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaṁ mahākoṭṭhikaṁ etadavoca:
The same setting. Sāriputta said to Mahākoṭṭhita:
“‘अविज्जा, अविज्जाऽति, आवुसो कोट्ठिक, वुच्चति। कतमा नु खो, आवुसो, अविज्जा; कित्तावता च अविज्जागतो होती”ति?
“‘avijjā, avijjā’ti, āvuso koṭṭhika, vuccati. Katamā nu kho, āvuso, avijjā; kittāvatā ca avijjāgato hotī”ti?
“Friend Koṭṭhita, they speak of this thing called ‘ignorance’. What is ignorance? And how is an ignorant person defined?”
“इधावुसो, अस्सुतवा पुथुज्जनो रूपं नप्पजानाति, रूपसमुदयं नप्पजानाति, रूपनिरोधं नप्पजानाति, रूपनिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं नप्पजानाति। वेदनं नप्पजानाति …पे… सञ्ञं … सङ्खारे … विञ्ञाणं नप्पजानाति, विञ्ञाणसमुदयं नप्पजानाति, विञ्ञाणनिरोधं नप्पजानाति, विञ्ञाणनिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं नप्पजानाति।
“Idhāvuso, assutavā puthujjano rūpaṁ nappajānāti, rūpasamudayaṁ nappajānāti, rūpanirodhaṁ nappajānāti, rūpanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ nappajānāti. Vedanaṁ nappajānāti …pe… saññaṁ … saṅkhāre … viññāṇaṁ nappajānāti, viññāṇasamudayaṁ nappajānāti, viññāṇanirodhaṁ nappajānāti, viññāṇanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ nappajānāti.
“Friend, it’s when an unlearned ordinary person doesn’t understand form, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. They don’t understand feeling … perception … choices … consciousness, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation.
अयं वुच्चतावुसो, अविज्जा; एत्तावता च अविज्जागतो होती”ति।
Ayaṁ vuccatāvuso, avijjā; ettāvatā ca avijjāgato hotī”ti.
This is called ignorance. And this is how an ignorant person is defined.”
एवं वुत्ते, आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो आयस्मन्तं महाकोट्ठिकं एतदवोच:
Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaṁ mahākoṭṭhikaṁ etadavoca:
When he said this, Venerable Sāriputta said to him:
“‘विज्जा, विज्जाऽति, आवुसो कोट्ठिक, वुच्चति। कतमा नु खो, आवुसो, विज्जा; कित्तावता च विज्जागतो होती”ति?
“‘vijjā, vijjā’ti, āvuso koṭṭhika, vuccati. Katamā nu kho, āvuso, vijjā; kittāvatā ca vijjāgato hotī”ti?
“Friend Koṭṭhita, they speak of this thing called ‘knowledge’. What is knowledge? And how is a knowledgeable person defined?”
“इधावुसो, सुतवा अरियसावको रूपं पजानाति, रूपसमुदयं पजानाति, रूपनिरोधं पजानाति, रूपनिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं पजानाति। वेदनं … सञ्ञं … सङ्खारे … विञ्ञाणं पजानाति, विञ्ञाणसमुदयं पजानाति, विञ्ञाणनिरोधं पजानाति, विञ्ञाणनिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं पजानाति।
“Idhāvuso, sutavā ariyasāvako rūpaṁ pajānāti, rūpasamudayaṁ pajānāti, rūpanirodhaṁ pajānāti, rūpanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ pajānāti. Vedanaṁ … saññaṁ … saṅkhāre … viññāṇaṁ pajānāti, viññāṇasamudayaṁ pajānāti, viññāṇanirodhaṁ pajānāti, viññāṇanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ pajānāti.
“Friend, it’s when a learned noble disciple understands form, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. They understand feeling … perception … choices … consciousness, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation.
अयं वुच्चतावुसो, विज्जा; एत्तावता च विज्जागतो होती”ति।
Ayaṁ vuccatāvuso, vijjā; ettāvatā ca vijjāgato hotī”ti.
This is called knowledge. And this is how a knowledgeable person is defined.”

Avijjāvaggo tatiyo.
तस्सुद्दानं
Tassuddānaṁ
समुदयधम्मे तीणि, अस्सादो अपरे दुवे; समुदये च द्वे वुत्ता, कोट्ठिके अपरे तयोति।
Samudayadhamme tīṇi, assādo apare duve; Samudaye ca dve vuttā, koṭṭhike apare tayoti.
