तेन खो पन समयेन आयस्मा तिस्सो भगवतो पितुच्छापुत्तो सम्बहुलानं भिक्खूनं एवमारोचेति:
Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā tisso bhagavato pitucchāputto sambahulānaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ evamāroceti:
Now at that time Venerable Tissa, the Buddha’s paternal cousin, informed several bhikkhus:
“अपि मे, आवुसो, मधुरकजातो विय कायो; दिसापि मे न पक्खायन्ति; धम्मापि मं न पटिभन्ति; थिनमिद्धञ्च मे चित्तं परियादाय तिट्ठति; अनभिरतो च ब्रह्मचरियं चरामि; होति च मे धम्मेसु विचिकिच्छा”ति।
“api me, āvuso, madhurakajāto viya kāyo; disāpi me na pakkhāyanti; dhammāpi maṁ na paṭibhanti; thinamiddhañca1 me cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati; anabhirato ca brahmacariyaṁ carāmi; hoti ca me dhammesu vicikicchā”ti.
“Friends, my body feels like it’s drugged. I’m disorientated, the teachings don’t spring to mind, and dullness and drowsiness fill my mind. I lead the spiritual life dissatisfied, and have doubts about the teachings.”
अथ खो सम्बहुला भिक्खू येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदिंसु। एकमन्तं निसिन्ना खो ते भिक्खू भगवन्तं एतदवोचुं: “आयस्मा, भन्ते, तिस्सो भगवतो पितुच्छापुत्तो सम्बहुलानं भिक्खूनं एवमारोचेति: ‘अपि मे, आवुसो, मधुरकजातो विय कायो; दिसापि मे न पक्खायन्ति; धम्मापि मं न पटिभन्ति; थिनमिद्धञ्च मे चित्तं परियादाय तिट्ठति; अनभिरतो च ब्रह्मचरियं चरामि; होति च मे धम्मेसु विचिकिच्छाऽ”ति।
Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu. Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ: “āyasmā, bhante, tisso bhagavato pitucchāputto sambahulānaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ evamāroceti: ‘api me, āvuso, madhurakajāto viya kāyo; disāpi me na pakkhāyanti; dhammāpi maṁ na paṭibhanti; thinamiddhañca me cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati; anabhirato ca brahmacariyaṁ carāmi; hoti ca me dhammesu vicikicchā’”ti.
Then several bhikkhus went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened.
अथ खो भगवा अञ्ञतरं भिक्खुं आमन्तेसि: “एहि त्वं, भिक्खु, मम वचनेन तिस्सं भिक्खुं आमन्तेही”ति।
Atha kho bhagavā aññataraṁ bhikkhuṁ āmantesi: “ehi tvaṁ, bhikkhu, mama vacanena tissaṁ bhikkhuṁ āmantehī”ti.
So the Buddha addressed a certain monk, “Please, monk, in my name tell the bhikkhu Tissa that the Teacher summons him.”
“एवं, भन्ते”ति खो सो भिक्खु भगवतो पटिस्सुत्वा येनायस्मा तिस्सो तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा आयस्मन्तं तिस्सं एतदवोच: “सत्था तं, आवुसो तिस्स, आमन्तेती”ति।
“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho so bhikkhu bhagavato paṭissutvā yenāyasmā tisso tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ tissaṁ etadavoca: “satthā taṁ, āvuso tissa, āmantetī”ti.
“Yes, sir,” that monk replied. He went to Tissa and said to him, “Friend Tissa, the teacher summons you.”
“एवमावुसो”ति खो आयस्मा तिस्सो तस्स भिक्खुनो पटिस्सुत्वा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो आयस्मन्तं तिस्सं भगवा एतदवोच:
“Evamāvuso”ti kho āyasmā tisso tassa bhikkhuno paṭissutvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ tissaṁ bhagavā etadavoca:
“Yes, friend,” Tissa replied. He went to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“सच्चं किर त्वं, तिस्स, सम्बहुलानं भिक्खूनं एवमारोचेसि: ‘अपि मे, आवुसो, मधुरकजातो विय कायो …पे… होति च मे धम्मेसु विचिकिच्छाऽ”ति?
“saccaṁ kira tvaṁ, tissa, sambahulānaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ evamārocesi: ‘api me, āvuso, madhurakajāto viya kāyo …pe… hoti ca me dhammesu vicikicchā’”ti?
“Is it really true, Tissa, that you informed several bhikkhus that your body feels like it’s drugged … and you have doubts about the teachings?”
“एवं, भन्ते”।
“Evaṁ, bhante”.
“Yes, sir.”
“तं किं मञ्ञसि, तिस्स, रूपे अविगतरागस्स अविगतच्छन्दस्स अविगतपेमस्स अविगतपिपासस्स अविगतपरिळाहस्स अविगततण्हस्स, तस्स रूपस्स विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा उप्पज्जन्ति सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा”ति?
“Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, tissa, rūpe avigatarāgassa avigatacchandassa avigatapemassa avigatapipāsassa avigatapariḷāhassa avigatataṇhassa, tassa rūpassa vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā uppajjanti sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā”ti?
“What do you think, Tissa? If you’re not rid of greed, desire, fondness, thirst, passion, and craving for form, when that form decays and perishes, will it give rise to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress?”
“एवं, भन्ते”।
“Evaṁ, bhante”.
“Yes, sir.”
“साधु साधु, तिस्स। एवञ्हेतं, तिस्स, होति। यथा तं रूपे अविगतरागस्स …
“Sādhu sādhu, tissa. Evañhetaṁ, tissa, hoti. Yathā taṁ rūpe avigatarāgassa …
“Good, good, Tissa! That’s how it is, Tissa, when you’re not rid of greed for form.
वेदनाय … सञ्ञाय … सङ्खारेसु अविगतरागस्स …पे… तेसं सङ्खारानं विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा उप्पज्जन्ति सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा”ति? “एवं, भन्ते”। “साधु साधु, तिस्स। एवञ्हेतं, तिस्स, होति। यथा तं सङ्खारेसु अनिगतरागस्स, विञ्ञाणे अविगतरागस्स अविगतच्छन्दस्स अविगतपेमस्स अविगतपिपासस्स अविगतपरिळाहस्स अविगततण्हस्स, तस्स विञ्ञाणस्स विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा उप्पज्जन्ति सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा”ति?
vedanāya … saññāya … saṅkhāresu avigatarāgassa …pe… tesaṁ saṅkhārānaṁ vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā uppajjanti sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā”ti? “Evaṁ, bhante”. “Sādhu sādhu, tissa. Evañhetaṁ, tissa, hoti. Yathā taṁ saṅkhāresu anigatarāgassa, viññāṇe avigatarāgassa avigatacchandassa avigatapemassa avigatapipāsassa avigatapariḷāhassa avigatataṇhassa, tassa viññāṇassa vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā uppajjanti sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā”ti?
If you’re not rid of greed for feeling … perception … choices … consciousness, when that consciousness decays and perishes, will it give rise to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress?”
“एवं, भन्ते”।
“Evaṁ, bhante”.
“Yes, sir.”
“साधु साधु, तिस्स। एवञ्हेतं, तिस्स, होति। यथा तं विञ्ञाणे अविगतरागस्स।
“Sādhu sādhu, tissa. Evañhetaṁ, tissa, hoti. Yathā taṁ viññāṇe avigatarāgassa.
“Good, good, Tissa! That’s how it is, Tissa, when you’re not rid of greed for consciousness.
तं किं मञ्ञसि, तिस्स, रूपे विगतरागस्स विगतच्छन्दस्स विगतपेमस्स विगतपिपासस्स विगतपरिळाहस्स विगततण्हस्स, तस्स रूपस्स विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा उप्पज्जन्ति सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा”ति?
Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, tissa, rūpe vigatarāgassa vigatacchandassa vigatapemassa vigatapipāsassa vigatapariḷāhassa vigatataṇhassa, tassa rūpassa vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā uppajjanti sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā”ti?
What do you think, Tissa? If you are rid of greed, desire, fondness, thirst, passion, and craving for form, when that form decays and perishes, will it give rise to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress?”
“नो हेतं, भन्ते”।
“No hetaṁ, bhante”.
“No, sir.”
“साधु साधु, तिस्स। एवञ्हेतं, तिस्स, होति। यथा तं रूपे विगतरागस्स … वेदनाय … सञ्ञाय … सङ्खारेसु विगतरागस्स … विञ्ञाणे विगतरागस्स विगतच्छन्दस्स विगतपेमस्स विगतपिपासस्स विगतपरिळाहस्स विगततण्हस्स तस्स विञ्ञाणस्स विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा उप्पज्जन्ति सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा”ति? “नो हेतं, भन्ते”। “साधु साधु, तिस्स। एवञ्हेतं, तिस्स, होति। यथा तं विञ्ञाणे विगतरागस्स।
“Sādhu sādhu, tissa. Evañhetaṁ, tissa, hoti. Yathā taṁ rūpe vigatarāgassa … vedanāya … saññāya … saṅkhāresu vigatarāgassa … viññāṇe vigatarāgassa vigatacchandassa vigatapemassa vigatapipāsassa vigatapariḷāhassa vigatataṇhassa tassa viññāṇassa vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā uppajjanti sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā”ti? “No hetaṁ, bhante”. “Sādhu sādhu, tissa. Evañhetaṁ, tissa, hoti. Yathā taṁ viññāṇe vigatarāgassa.
“Good, good, Tissa! That’s how it is, Tissa, when you are rid of greed for form … feeling … perception … choices … consciousness.
तं किं मञ्ञसि, तिस्स, रूपं निच्चं वा अनिच्चं वा”ति?
Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, tissa, rūpaṁ niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vā”ti?
What do you think, Tissa? Is form permanent or impermanent?”
“अनिच्चं, भन्ते”।
“Aniccaṁ, bhante”.
“Impermanent, sir.”
“वेदना … सञ्ञा … सङ्खारा … विञ्ञाणं निच्चं वा अनिच्चं वा”ति?
“Vedanā … saññā … saṅkhārā … viññāṇaṁ niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vā”ti?
“Is feeling … perception … choices … consciousness permanent or impermanent?”
“अनिच्चं, भन्ते”।
“Aniccaṁ, bhante”.
“Impermanent, sir.”
“तस्मातिह …पे… एवं पस्सं …पे… नापरं इत्थत्तायाति पजानाति।
“Tasmātiha …pe… evaṁ passaṁ …pe… nāparaṁ itthattāyāti pajānāti.
“So you should truly see … Seeing this … They understand: ‘… there is no return to any state of existence.’
सेय्यथापि, तिस्स, द्वे पुरिसा—एको पुरिसो अमग्गकुसलो, एको पुरिसो मग्गकुसलो। तमेनं सो अमग्गकुसलो पुरिसो अमुं मग्गकुसलं पुरिसं मग्गं पुच्छेय्य। सो एवं वदेय्य: ‘एहि, भो पुरिस, अयं मग्गो। तेन मुहुत्तं गच्छ। तेन मुहुत्तं गन्त्वा दक्खिस्ससि द्वेधापथं, तत्थ वामं मुञ्चित्वा दक्खिणं गण्हाहि। तेन मुहुत्तं गच्छ। तेन मुहुत्तं गन्त्वा दक्खिस्ससि तिब्बं वनसण्डं। तेन मुहुत्तं गच्छ। तेन मुहुत्तं गन्त्वा दक्खिस्ससि महन्तं निन्नं पल्ललं। तेन मुहुत्तं गच्छ। तेन मुहुत्तं गन्त्वा दक्खिस्ससि सोब्भं पपातं। तेन मुहुत्तं गच्छ। तेन मुहुत्तं गन्त्वा दक्खिस्ससि समं भूमिभागं रमणीयन्ऽति।
Seyyathāpi, tissa, dve purisā—eko puriso amaggakusalo, eko puriso maggakusalo. Tamenaṁ so amaggakusalo puriso amuṁ maggakusalaṁ purisaṁ maggaṁ puccheyya. So evaṁ vadeyya: ‘ehi, bho purisa, ayaṁ maggo. Tena muhuttaṁ gaccha. Tena muhuttaṁ gantvā dakkhissasi dvedhāpathaṁ, tattha vāmaṁ muñcitvā dakkhiṇaṁ gaṇhāhi. Tena muhuttaṁ gaccha. Tena muhuttaṁ gantvā dakkhissasi tibbaṁ vanasaṇḍaṁ. Tena muhuttaṁ gaccha. Tena muhuttaṁ gantvā dakkhissasi mahantaṁ ninnaṁ pallalaṁ. Tena muhuttaṁ gaccha. Tena muhuttaṁ gantvā dakkhissasi sobbhaṁ papātaṁ. Tena muhuttaṁ gaccha. Tena muhuttaṁ gantvā dakkhissasi samaṁ bhūmibhāgaṁ ramaṇīyan’ti.
Suppose, Tissa, there were two people. One was not skilled in the path, the other was. The one not skilled in the path would question the one skilled in the path, who would reply: ‘Come, good man, this is the path. Go down it a little, and you’ll see a fork in the road. Ignore the left, and take the right-hand path. Go a little further, and you’ll see a dark forest grove. Go a little further, and you’ll see an expanse of low-lying marshes. Go a little further, and you’ll see a large, steep cliff. Go a little further, and you’ll see level, cleared parkland.’
उपमा खो म्यायं, तिस्स, कता अत्थस्स विञ्ञापनाय। अयं चेवेत्थ अत्थो:
Upamā kho myāyaṁ, tissa, katā atthassa viññāpanāya. Ayaṁ cevettha attho:
I’ve made up this simile to make a point. And this is what it means.
‘पुरिसो अमग्गकुसलोऽति खो, तिस्स, पुथुज्जनस्सेतं अधिवचनं।
‘puriso amaggakusalo’ti kho, tissa, puthujjanassetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘A person who is not skilled in the path’ is a term for an ordinary unlearned person.
‘पुरिसो मग्गकुसलोऽति खो, तिस्स, तथागतस्सेतं अधिवचनं अरहतो सम्मासम्बुद्धस्स।
‘Puriso maggakusalo’ti kho, tissa, tathāgatassetaṁ adhivacanaṁ arahato sammāsambuddhassa.
‘A person who is skilled in the path’ is a term for the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha.
‘द्वेधापथोऽति खो, तिस्स, विचिकिच्छायेतं अधिवचनं।
‘Dvedhāpatho’ti kho, tissa, vicikicchāyetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘A fork in the road’ is a term for doubt.
‘वामो मग्गोऽति खो, तिस्स, अट्ठङ्गिकस्सेतं मिच्छामग्गस्स अधिवचनं, सेय्यथिदं—मिच्छादिट्ठिया …पे… मिच्छासमाधिस्स।
‘Vāmo maggo’ti kho, tissa, aṭṭhaṅgikassetaṁ micchāmaggassa adhivacanaṁ, seyyathidaṁ—micchādiṭṭhiyā …pe… micchāsamādhissa.
‘The left-hand path’ is a term for the wrong eightfold path, that is, wrong view … wrong immersion.
‘दक्खिणो मग्गोऽति खो, तिस्स, अरियस्सेतं अट्ठङ्गिकस्स मग्गस्स अधिवचनं, सेय्यथिदं—सम्मादिट्ठिया …पे… सम्मासमाधिस्स।
‘Dakkhiṇo maggo’ti kho, tissa, ariyassetaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikassa maggassa adhivacanaṁ, seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhiyā …pe… sammāsamādhissa.
‘The right-hand path’ is a term for the noble eightfold path, that is, right view … right immersion.
‘तिब्बो वनसण्डोऽति खो, तिस्स, अविज्जायेतं अधिवचनं।
‘Tibbo vanasaṇḍo’ti kho, tissa, avijjāyetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘A dark forest grove’ is a term for ignorance.
‘महन्तं निन्नं पल्ललन्ऽति खो, तिस्स, कामानमेतं अधिवचनं।
‘Mahantaṁ ninnaṁ pallalan’ti kho, tissa, kāmānametaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘An expanse of low-lying marshes’ is a term for sensual pleasures.
‘सोब्भो पपातोऽति खो, तिस्स, कोधूपायासस्सेतं अधिवचनं।
‘Sobbho papāto’ti kho, tissa, kodhūpāyāsassetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘A large, steep cliff’ is a term for anger and distress.
‘समो भूमिभागो रमणीयोऽति खो, तिस्स, निब्बानस्सेतं अधिवचनं।
‘Samo bhūmibhāgo ramaṇīyo’ti kho, tissa, nibbānassetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘Level, cleared parkland’ is a term for Nibbana.
अभिरम, तिस्स, अभिरम, तिस्स। अहमोवादेन अहमनुग्गहेन अहमनुसासनिया”ति।
Abhirama, tissa, abhirama, tissa. Ahamovādena ahamanuggahena ahamanusāsaniyā”ti.
Rejoice, Tissa, rejoice! I’m here to advise you, to support you, and to teach you.”
इदमवोच भगवा। अत्तमनो आयस्मा तिस्सो भगवतो भासितं अभिनन्दीति।
Idamavoca bhagavā. Attamano āyasmā tisso bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandīti.
That is what the Buddha said. Satisfied, Venerable Tissa was happy with what the Buddha said.
