Uddhambhāgiyasutta
Higher Fetters
“पञ्चिमानि, भिक्खवे, उद्धम्भागियानि संयोजनानि। कतमानि पञ्च? रूपरागो, अरूपरागो, मानो, उद्धच्चं, अविज्जा—इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चुद्धम्भागियानि संयोजनानि।
“Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, uddhambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni. Katamāni pañca? Rūparāgo, arūparāgo, māno, uddhaccaṁ, avijjā—imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañcuddhambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni.
“Bhikkhus, there are five higher fetters. What five? Desire for rebirth in the realm of luminous form, desire for rebirth in the formless realm, conceit, restlessness, and ignorance. These are the five higher fetters.
इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चन्नं उद्धम्भागियानं संयोजनानं अभिञ्ञाय परिञ्ञाय परिक्खयाय पहानाय अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो भावेतब्बो। कतमो अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सम्मादिट्ठिं भावेति विवेकनिस्सितं …पे… सम्मासमाधिं भावेति विवेकनिस्सितं विरागनिस्सितं निरोधनिस्सितं वोस्सग्गपरिणामिं।
Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcannaṁ uddhambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo. Katamo ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sammādiṭṭhiṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ …pe… sammāsamādhiṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ.
The noble eightfold path should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters. What is the noble eightfold path? It’s when a bhikkhu develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.
इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चन्नं उद्धम्भागियानं संयोजनानं अभिञ्ञाय परिञ्ञाय परिक्खयाय पहानाय अयं अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो भावेतब्बोति।
Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcannaṁ uddhambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabboti.
This is the noble eightfold path that should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters.”
पञ्चिमानि, भिक्खवे, उद्धम्भागियानि संयोजनानि। कतमानि पञ्च? रूपरागो, अरूपरागो, मानो, उद्धच्चं, अविज्जा—इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चुद्धम्भागियानि संयोजनानि।

Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcannaṁ uddhambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo. Katamo ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sammādiṭṭhiṁ bhāveti …pe… sammāsamādhiṁ bhāveti rāgavinayapariyosānaṁ dosavinayapariyosānaṁ mohavinayapariyosānaṁ … amatogadhaṁ amataparāyanaṁ amatapariyosānaṁ … nibbānaninnaṁ nibbānapoṇaṁ nibbānapabbhāraṁ.
The noble eightfold path should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters. What is the noble eightfold path? It’s when a bhikkhu develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion, which culminate in the removal of greed, hate, and delusion …” “… which culminate, finish, and end in the deathless …” “… which slant, slope, and incline to Nibbana.
इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चन्नं उद्धम्भागियानं संयोजनानं अभिञ्ञाय परिञ्ञाय परिक्खयाय पहानाय अयं अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो भावेतब्बो”ति।

Tassuddānaṁ
ओघो योगो उपादानं, गन्थं अनुसयेन च; कामगुणा नीवरणं, खन्धा ओरुद्धम्भागियाति।
Ogho yogo upādānaṁ, ganthaṁ anusayena ca; Kāmaguṇā nīvaraṇaṁ, khandhā oruddhambhāgiyāti.
वग्गुद्दानं

अविज्जावग्गो पठमो, दुतियं विहारं वुच्चति; मिच्छत्तं ततियो वग्गो, चतुत्थं पटिपन्नेनेव।
Avijjāvaggo paṭhamo, dutiyaṁ vihāraṁ vuccati; Micchattaṁ tatiyo vaggo, catutthaṁ paṭipanneneva.
तित्थियं पञ्चमो वग्गो, छट्ठो सूरियेन च; बहुकते सत्तमो वग्गो, उप्पादो अट्ठमेन च।
Titthiyaṁ pañcamo vaggo, chaṭṭho sūriyena ca; Bahukate sattamo vaggo, uppādo aṭṭhamena ca.
दिवसवग्गो नवमो, दसमो अप्पमादेन च; एकादसबलवग्गो, द्वादस एसना पाळियं; ओघवग्गो भवति तेरसाति।
Divasavaggo navamo, Dasamo appamādena ca; Ekādasabalavaggo, Dvādasa esanā pāḷiyaṁ; Oghavaggo bhavati terasāti.
मग्गसंयुत्तं पठमं।
