    Uddhambhāgiyasutta

    Higher Fetters

    सावत्थिनिदानं।

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

    “पञ्चिमानि, भिक्खवे, उद्धम्भागियानि संयोजनानि। कतमानि पञ्च? रूपरागो, अरूपरागो, मानो, उद्धच्चं, अविज्जा—इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चुद्धम्भागियानि संयोजनानि। इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चन्नं उद्धम्भागियानं संयोजनानं अभिञ्ञाय परिञ्ञाय परिक्खयाय पहानाय सत्त बोज्झङ्गा भावेतब्बा।

    “Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, uddhambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni. Katamāni pañca? Rūparāgo, arūparāgo, māno, uddhaccaṁ, avijjā—imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañcuddhambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni. Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcannaṁ uddhambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya satta bojjhaṅgā bhāvetabbā.

    “Bhikkhus, there are five higher fetters. What five? Desire for rebirth in the realm of luminous form, desire for rebirth in the formless realm, conceit, restlessness, and ignorance. These are the five higher fetters. The seven awakening factors should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters.

    कतमे सत्त? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सतिसम्बोज्झङ्गं भावेति विवेकनिस्सितं विरागनिस्सितं निरोधनिस्सितं वोस्सग्गपरिणामिं …पे… उपेक्खासम्बोज्झङ्गं भावेति रागविनयपरियोसानं दोसविनयपरियोसानं मोहविनयपरियोसानं …

    Katame satta? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu satisambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ …pe… upekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti rāgavinayapariyosānaṁ dosavinayapariyosānaṁ mohavinayapariyosānaṁ …

    What seven? It’s when a bhikkhu develops the awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, and equanimity, which culminate in the removal of greed, hate, and delusion. …”

    अमतोगधं अमतपरायनं अमतपरियोसानं …

    amatogadhaṁ amataparāyanaṁ amatapariyosānaṁ …

    “… which culminate, finish, and end in the deathless …”

    निब्बाननिन्नं निब्बानपोणं निब्बानपब्भारं।

    nibbānaninnaṁ nibbānapoṇaṁ nibbānapabbhāraṁ.

    “… which slant, slope, and incline to Nibbana …

    इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु पञ्चन्नं उद्धम्भागियानं संयोजनानं अभिञ्ञाय परिञ्ञाय परिक्खयाय पहानाय इमे सत्त बोज्झङ्गा भावेतब्बा”ति।

    Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañcannaṁ uddhambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya ime satta bojjhaṅgā bhāvetabbā”ti.

    The seven awakening factors should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters.”

    ओघवग्गो तेरसमो।

    Oghavaggo terasamo.

    तस्सुद्दानं

    Tassuddānaṁ

    ओघो योगो उपादानं, गन्था अनुसयेन च; कामगुणा नीवरणा, खन्धा ओरुद्धम्भागियानीति।

    Ogho yogo upādānaṁ, Ganthā anusayena ca; Kāmaguṇā nīvaraṇā, Khandhā oruddhambhāgiyānīti.
