    Ujjhānasaññisutta

    Disdain

    एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे।

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Monastery.

    अथ खो सम्बहुला उज्झानसञ्ञिका देवतायो अभिक्कन्ताय रत्तिया अभिक्कन्तवण्णा केवलकप्पं जेतवनं ओभासेत्वा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा वेहासं अट्ठंसु। वेहासं ठिता खो एका देवता भगवतो सन्तिके इमं गाथं अभासि:

    Atha kho sambahulā ujjhānasaññikā devatāyo abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā vehāsaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu. Vehāsaṁ ṭhitā kho ekā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

    Then, late at night, several glorious deities of the Disdainful Group, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, and stood in the air. Standing in the air, one deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

    “अञ्ञथा सन्तमत्तानं, अञ्ञथा यो पवेदये; निकच्च कितवस्सेव, भुत्तं थेय्येन तस्स तं।

    “Aññathā santamattānaṁ, aññathā yo pavedaye; Nikacca kitavasseva, bhuttaṁ theyyena tassa taṁ.

    “Someone who pretends to be other than they really are, is like a cheating gambler who enjoys what was gained by theft.

    यञ्हि कयिरा तञ्हि वदे, यं न कयिरा न तं वदे; अकरोन्तं भासमानं, परिजानन्ति पण्डिता”ति।

    Yañhi kayirā tañhi vade, yaṁ na kayirā na taṁ vade; Akarontaṁ bhāsamānaṁ, parijānanti paṇḍitā”ti.

    You should only say what you would do; you shouldn’t say what you wouldn’t do. The wise will recognize one who talks without doing.”

    “न यिदं भासितमत्तेन, एकन्तसवनेन वा; अनुक्कमितवे सक्का, यायं पटिपदा दळ्हा; याय धीरा पमुच्चन्ति, झायिनो मारबन्धना।

    “Na yidaṁ bhāsitamattena, ekantasavanena vā; Anukkamitave sakkā, yāyaṁ paṭipadā daḷhā; Yāya dhīrā pamuccanti, jhāyino mārabandhanā.

    “Not just by speaking, nor solely by listening, are you able to progress on this hard path, by which wise ones practicing absorption are released from Māra’s bonds.

    न वे धीरा पकुब्बन्ति, विदित्वा लोकपरियायं; अञ्ञाय निब्बुता धीरा, तिण्णा लोके विसत्तिकन्”ति।

    Na ve dhīrā pakubbanti, viditvā lokapariyāyaṁ; Aññāya nibbutā dhīrā, tiṇṇā loke visattikan”ti.

    The wise certainly don’t act like that, for they understand the way of the world. The wise are extinguished by understanding, they’ve crossed over clinging to the world.”

    अथ खो ता देवतायो पथवियं पतिट्ठहित्वा भगवतो पादेसु सिरसा निपतित्वा भगवन्तं एतदवोचुं: “अच्चयो नो, भन्ते, अच्चगमा यथाबालं यथामूळ्हं यथाअकुसलं, या मयं भगवन्तं आसादेतब्बं अमञ्ञिम्हा। तासं नो, भन्ते, भगवा अच्चयं अच्चयतो पटिग्गण्हातु आयतिं संवराया”ति।

    Atha kho tā devatāyo pathaviyaṁ patiṭṭhahitvā bhagavato pādesu sirasā nipatitvā bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ: “accayo no, bhante, accagamā yathābālaṁ yathāmūḷhaṁ yathāakusalaṁ, yā mayaṁ bhagavantaṁ āsādetabbaṁ amaññimhā. Tāsaṁ no, bhante, bhagavā accayaṁ accayato paṭiggaṇhātu āyatiṁ saṁvarāyā”ti.

    Then those deities landed on the ground, bowed with their heads at the Buddha’s feet and said, “We have made a mistake, sir. It was foolish, stupid, and unskillful of us to imagine we could attack the Buddha! Please, sir, accept our mistake for what it is, so we will restrain ourselves in future.”

    अथ खो भगवा सितं पात्वाकासि।

    Atha kho bhagavā sitaṁ pātvākāsi.

    At that, the Buddha smiled.

    अथ खो ता देवतायो भिय्योसो मत्ताय उज्झायन्तियो वेहासं अब्भुग्गञ्छुं। एका देवता भगवतो सन्तिके इमं गाथं अभासि:

    Atha kho tā devatāyo bhiyyoso mattāya ujjhāyantiyo vehāsaṁ abbhuggañchuṁ. Ekā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

    Then those deities, becoming even more disdainful, flew up in the air. One deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

    “अच्चयं देसयन्तीनं, यो चे न पटिगण्हति; कोपन्तरो दोसगरु, स वेरं पटिमुञ्चती”ति।

    “Accayaṁ desayantīnaṁ, yo ce na paṭigaṇhati; Kopantaro dosagaru, sa veraṁ paṭimuñcatī”ti.

    “If you don’t give your pardon when a mistake is confessed, with hidden anger and heavy hate, you’re stuck in your enmity.”

    “अच्चयो चे न विज्जेथ, नोचिधापगतं सिया; वेरानि न च सम्मेय्युं, केनीध कुसलो सिया”ति।

    “Accayo ce na vijjetha, nocidhāpagataṁ1 siyā; Verāni na ca sammeyyuṁ, kenīdha2 kusalo siyā”ti.

    “If no mistake is found, if no-one’s gone astray, and enmities are settled, then who could have been unskillful?”

    “कस्सच्चया न विज्जन्ति, कस्स नत्थि अपागतं; को न सम्मोहमापादि, को च धीरो सदा सतो”ति।

    “Kassaccayā na vijjanti, kassa natthi apāgataṁ; Ko na sammohamāpādi, ko ca3 dhīro sadā sato”ti.

    “Who makes no mistakes? Who doesn’t go astray? Who doesn’t fall into confusion? Who is the wise one that’s ever mindful?”

    “तथागतस्स बुद्धस्स, सब्बभूतानुकम्पिनो; तस्सच्चया न विज्जन्ति, तस्स नत्थि अपागतं; सो न सम्मोहमापादि, सोव धीरो सदा सतोति।

    “Tathāgatassa buddhassa, sabbabhūtānukampino; Tassaccayā na vijjanti, tassa natthi apāgataṁ; So na sammohamāpādi, sova4 dhīro sadā satoti.

    “The Realized One, the Buddha, compassionate for all beings: that’s who makes no mistakes, and that’s who doesn’t go astray. He doesn’t fall into confusion, for he’s the wise one, ever mindful.

    अच्चयं देसयन्तीनं, यो चे न पटिगण्हति; कोपन्तरो दोसगरु, स वेरं पटिमुञ्चति; तं वेरं नाभिनन्दामि, पटिग्गण्हामि वोच्चयन्”ति।

    Accayaṁ desayantīnaṁ, yo ce na paṭigaṇhati; Kopantaro dosagaru, sa veraṁ paṭimuñcati; Taṁ veraṁ nābhinandāmi, paṭiggaṇhāmi voccayan”ti.

    If you don’t give your pardon when a mistake is confessed, with hidden anger and heavy hate, you’re stuck in your enmity. I don’t approve of such enmity, and so I pardon your mistake.”
