At Ukkacelā
एकं समयं भगवा वज्जीसु विहरति उक्कचेलायं गङ्गाय नदिया तीरे महता भिक्खुसङ्घेन सद्धिं अचिरपरिनिब्बुतेसु सारिपुत्तमोग्गल्लानेसु। तेन खो पन समयेन भगवा भिक्खुसङ्घपरिवुतो अज्झोकासे निसिन्नो होति।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vajjīsu viharati ukkacelāyaṁ gaṅgāya nadiyā tīre mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ aciraparinibbutesu sāriputtamoggallānesu. Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā bhikkhusaṅghaparivuto ajjhokāse nisinno hoti.
At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Vajjis near Ukkacelā on the bank of the Ganges river, together with a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus. It was not long after Sāriputta and Moggallāna had become fully extinguished. Now, at that time the Buddha was sitting in the open, surrounded by the Saṅgha of bhikkhus.
अथ खो भगवा तुण्हीभूतं भिक्खुसङ्घं अनुविलोकेत्वा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि:
Atha kho bhagavā tuṇhībhūtaṁ bhikkhusaṅghaṁ anuviloketvā bhikkhū āmantesi:
Then the Buddha looked around the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, who were silent. He addressed them:
“अपि म्यायं, भिक्खवे, परिसा सुञ्ञा विय खायति परिनिब्बुतेसु सारिपुत्तमोग्गल्लानेसु। असुञ्ञा मे, भिक्खवे, परिसा होति, अनपेक्खा तस्सं दिसायं होति, यस्सं दिसायं सारिपुत्तमोग्गल्लाना विहरन्ति। ये हि ते, भिक्खवे, अहेसुं अतीतमद्धानं अरहन्तो सम्मासम्बुद्धा, तेसम्पि भगवन्तानं एतप्परमंयेव सावकयुगं अहोसि—सेय्यथापि मय्हं सारिपुत्तमोग्गल्लाना। येपि ते, भिक्खवे, भविस्सन्ति अनागतमद्धानं अरहन्तो सम्मासम्बुद्धा, तेसम्पि भगवन्तानं एतप्परमंयेव सावकयुगं भविस्सति—सेय्यथापि मय्हं सारिपुत्तमोग्गल्लाना।
“api myāyaṁ, bhikkhave, parisā suññā viya khāyati parinibbutesu sāriputtamoggallānesu. Asuññā me, bhikkhave, parisā hoti, anapekkhā tassaṁ disāyaṁ hoti, yassaṁ disāyaṁ sāriputtamoggallānā viharanti. Ye hi1 te, bhikkhave, ahesuṁ atītamaddhānaṁ arahanto sammāsambuddhā, tesampi bhagavantānaṁ etapparamaṁyeva sāvakayugaṁ ahosi—seyyathāpi mayhaṁ sāriputtamoggallānā. Yepi te, bhikkhave, bhavissanti anāgatamaddhānaṁ arahanto sammāsambuddhā, tesampi bhagavantānaṁ etapparamaṁyeva sāvakayugaṁ bhavissati—seyyathāpi mayhaṁ sāriputtamoggallānā.
“Bhikkhus, this assembly seems empty to me now that Sāriputta and Moggallāna have become fully extinguished. When Sāriputta and Moggallāna were alive, my assembly was never empty; I had no concern for any region where they stayed. The Buddhas of the past or the future have pairs of chief disciples who are no better than Sāriputta and Moggallāna were to me.
अच्छरियं, भिक्खवे, सावकानं, अब्भुतं, भिक्खवे, सावकानं। सत्थु च नाम सासनकरा भविस्सन्ति ओवादप्पटिकरा, चतुन्नञ्च परिसानं पिया भविस्सन्ति मनापा गरुभावनीया च।
Acchariyaṁ, bhikkhave, sāvakānaṁ, abbhutaṁ, bhikkhave, sāvakānaṁ. Satthu ca nāma sāsanakarā bhavissanti ovādappaṭikarā, catunnañca parisānaṁ piyā bhavissanti manāpā garubhāvanīyā ca.
It’s an incredible and amazing quality of such disciples that they fulfill the Teacher’s instructions and follow his advice. And they’re liked and approved, respected and admired by the four assemblies.
अच्छरियं, भिक्खवे, तथागतस्स, अब्भुतं, भिक्खवे, तथागतस्स। एवरूपेपि नाम सावकयुगे परिनिब्बुते नत्थि तथागतस्स सोको वा परिदेवो वा। तं कुतेत्थ, भिक्खवे, लब्भा। यं तं जातं भूतं सङ्खतं पलोकधम्मं, तं वत मा पलुज्जीति—नेतं ठानं विज्जति।
Acchariyaṁ, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa, abbhutaṁ, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa. Evarūpepi nāma sāvakayuge parinibbute natthi tathāgatassa soko vā paridevo vā. Taṁ kutettha, bhikkhave, labbhā. Yaṁ taṁ jātaṁ bhūtaṁ saṅkhataṁ palokadhammaṁ, taṁ vata mā palujjīti—netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati.
And it’s an incredible and amazing quality of the Realized One that when such a pair of disciples becomes fully extinguished he does not sorrow or lament. How could it possibly be so that what is born, created, conditioned, and liable to wear out should not wear out? That is not possible.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, महतो रुक्खस्स तिट्ठतो सारवतो ये महन्ततरा खन्धा ते पलुज्जेय्युं; एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, महतो भिक्खुसङ्घस्स तिट्ठतो सारवतो सारिपुत्तमोग्गल्लाना परिनिब्बुता।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, mahato rukkhassa tiṭṭhato sāravato ye mahantatarā khandhā te palujjeyyuṁ; evameva kho, bhikkhave, mahato bhikkhusaṅghassa tiṭṭhato sāravato sāriputtamoggallānā parinibbutā.
Suppose there was a large tree standing with heartwood, and the largest branches fell off. In the same way, in the great Saṅgha that stands with heartwood, Sāriputta and Moggallāna have become fully extinguished.
तं कुतेत्थ, भिक्खवे, लब्भा। यं तं जातं भूतं सङ्खतं पलोकधम्मं, तं वत मा पलुज्जीति—नेतं ठानं विज्जति।
Taṁ kutettha, bhikkhave, labbhā. Yaṁ taṁ jātaṁ bhūtaṁ saṅkhataṁ palokadhammaṁ, taṁ vata mā palujjīti—netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati.
How could it possibly be so that what is born, created, conditioned, and liable to wear out should not wear out? That is not possible.
तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, अत्तदीपा विहरथ अत्तसरणा अनञ्ञसरणा, धम्मदीपा धम्मसरणा अनञ्ञसरणा।
Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, attadīpā viharatha attasaraṇā anaññasaraṇā, dhammadīpā dhammasaraṇā anaññasaraṇā.
So bhikkhus, live as your own island, your own refuge, with no other refuge. Let the teaching be your island and your refuge, with no other refuge.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु अत्तदीपो विहरति अत्तसरणो अनञ्ञसरणो, धम्मदीपो धम्मसरणो अनञ्ञसरणो? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु काये कायानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं; वेदनासु …पे… चित्ते …पे… धम्मेसु धम्मानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu attadīpo viharati attasaraṇo anaññasaraṇo, dhammadīpo dhammasaraṇo anaññasaraṇo? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ; vedanāsu …pe… citte …pe… dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ.
And how does a bhikkhu do this? It’s when a bhikkhu meditates by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. They meditate observing an aspect of feelings … mind … principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.
एवं खो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु अत्तदीपो विहरति अत्तसरणो अनञ्ञसरणो, धम्मदीपो धम्मसरणो अनञ्ञसरणो।
Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu attadīpo viharati attasaraṇo anaññasaraṇo, dhammadīpo dhammasaraṇo anaññasaraṇo.
That’s how a bhikkhu lives as their own island, their own refuge, with no other refuge. That’s how the teaching is their island and their refuge, with no other refuge.
ये हि केचि, भिक्खवे, एतरहि वा ममच्चये वा अत्तदीपा विहरिस्सन्ति अत्तसरणा अनञ्ञसरणा, धम्मदीपा धम्मसरणा अनञ्ञसरणा; तमतग्गे मेते, भिक्खवे, भिक्खू भविस्सन्ति ये केचि सिक्खाकामा”ति।
Ye hi keci, bhikkhave, etarahi vā mamaccaye vā attadīpā viharissanti attasaraṇā anaññasaraṇā, dhammadīpā dhammasaraṇā anaññasaraṇā; tamatagge mete, bhikkhave, bhikkhū bhavissanti ye keci sikkhākāmā”ti.
Whether now or after I have passed, any who shall live as their own island, their own refuge, with no other refuge; with the teaching as their island and their refuge, with no other refuge—those bhikkhus of mine who want to train shall be among the best of the best.”
