    सावत्थिनिदानं।

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

    तत्र खो आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “आवुसो भिक्खवे”ति।

    Tatra kho āyasmā sāriputto bhikkhū āmantesi: “āvuso bhikkhave”ti.

    There Sāriputta addressed the bhikkhus: “Friends, bhikkhus!”

    “आवुसो”ति खो ते भिक्खू आयस्मतो सारिपुत्तस्स पच्चस्सोसुं। आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो एतदवोच:

    “Āvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato sāriputtassa paccassosuṁ. Āyasmā sāriputto etadavoca:

    “Friend,” they replied. Sāriputta said this:

    “इध मय्हं, आवुसो, रहोगतस्स पटिसल्लीनस्स एवं चेतसो परिवितक्को उदपादि: ‘अत्थि नु खो तं किञ्चि लोकस्मिं यस्स मे विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा उप्पज्जेय्युं सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासाऽति? तस्स मय्हं, आवुसो, एतदहोसि: ‘नत्थि खो तं किञ्चि लोकस्मिं यस्स मे विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा उप्पज्जेय्युं सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासाऽ”ति।

    “Idha mayhaṁ, āvuso, rahogatassa paṭisallīnassa evaṁ cetaso parivitakko udapādi: ‘atthi nu kho taṁ kiñci lokasmiṁ yassa me vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā uppajjeyyuṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā’ti? Tassa mayhaṁ, āvuso, etadahosi: ‘natthi kho taṁ kiñci lokasmiṁ yassa me vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā uppajjeyyuṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā’”ti.

    “Just now, friends, as I was in private retreat this thought came to mind: ‘Is there anything in the world whose decay and perishing would give rise to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress in me?’ It occurred to me: ‘There is nothing in the world whose decay and perishing would give rise to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress in me.’”

    एवं वुत्ते, आयस्मा आनन्दो आयस्मन्तं सारिपुत्तं एतदवोच: “सत्थुपि खो ते, आवुसो सारिपुत्त, विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा नुप्पज्जेय्युं सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा”ति?

    Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā ānando āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ etadavoca: “satthupi kho te, āvuso sāriputta, vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā nuppajjeyyuṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā”ti?

    When he said this, Venerable Ānanda said to him, “Even if the Teacher were to decay and perish? Wouldn’t that give rise to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress in you?”

    “सत्थुपि खो मे, आवुसो, विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा नुप्पज्जेय्युं सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा, अपि च मे एवमस्स: ‘महेसक्खो वत भो सत्था अन्तरहितो महिद्धिको महानुभावो। सचे हि भगवा चिरं दीघमद्धानं तिट्ठेय्य तदस्स बहुजनहिताय बहुजनसुखाय लोकानुकम्पाय अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय देवमनुस्सानन्ऽति।

    “Satthupi kho me, āvuso, vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā nuppajjeyyuṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā, api ca me evamassa: ‘mahesakkho vata bho satthā antarahito mahiddhiko mahānubhāvo. Sace hi bhagavā ciraṁ dīghamaddhānaṁ tiṭṭheyya tadassa bahujanahitāya bahujanasukhāya lokānukampāya atthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanussānan’ti.

    “Even if the Teacher were to decay and perish, that wouldn’t give rise to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress in me. Still, I would think: ‘Alas, the illustrious Teacher, so mighty and powerful, has vanished! If the Buddha was to remain for a long time, that would be for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of compassion for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans.’”

    तथा हि पनायस्मतो सारिपुत्तस्स दीघरत्तं अहङ्कारममङ्कारमानानुसया सुसमूहता। तस्मा आयस्मतो सारिपुत्तस्स सत्थुपि विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा नुप्पज्जेय्युं सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा”ति।

    Tathā hi panāyasmato sāriputtassa dīgharattaṁ ahaṅkāramamaṅkāramānānusayā susamūhatā. Tasmā āyasmato sāriputtassa satthupi vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā nuppajjeyyuṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā”ti.

    “That must be because Venerable Sāriputta has long ago totally eradicated ego, possessiveness, and the underlying tendency to conceit. So even if the Teacher were to decay and perish, it wouldn’t give rise to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress in him.”
