Getting Up
एकं समयं अञ्ञतरो भिक्खु कोसलेसु विहरति अञ्ञतरस्मिं वनसण्डे।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ aññataro bhikkhu kosalesu viharati aññatarasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe.
At one time one of the bhikkhus was staying in the land of the Kosalans in a certain forest grove.
तेन खो पन समयेन सो भिक्खु दिवाविहारगतो सुपति। अथ खो या तस्मिं वनसण्डे अधिवत्था देवता तस्स भिक्खुनो अनुकम्पिका अत्थकामा तं भिक्खुं संवेजेतुकामा येन सो भिक्खु तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा तं भिक्खुं गाथाहि अज्झभासि:
Tena kho pana samayena so bhikkhu divāvihāragato supati. Atha kho yā tasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe adhivatthā devatā tassa bhikkhuno anukampikā atthakāmā taṁ bhikkhuṁ saṁvejetukāmā yena so bhikkhu tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā taṁ bhikkhuṁ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi:
Now at that time that bhikkhu fell asleep during the day’s meditation. The deity haunting that forest had compassion for that bhikkhu, and wanted what’s best for them. So they approached that bhikkhu wanting to stir them up, and addressed them in verse:
“उट्ठेहि भिक्खु किं सेसि, को अत्थो सुपितेन ते; आतुरस्स हि का निद्दा, सल्लविद्धस्स रुप्पतो।
“Uṭṭhehi bhikkhu kiṁ sesi, ko attho supitena1 te; Āturassa hi kā niddā, sallaviddhassa ruppato.
“Get up, bhikkhu! Why lie down? What’s the point in sleeping? How can the afflicted slumber when injured by an arrow strike?
याय सद्धाय पब्बजितो, अगारस्मानगारियं; तमेव सद्धं ब्रूहेहि, मा निद्दाय वसं गमी”ति।
Yāya saddhāya pabbajito, agārasmānagāriyaṁ; Tameva saddhaṁ brūhehi, mā niddāya vasaṁ gamī”ti.
You should amplify the faith that led you to go forth from the home life to homelessness. Don’t fall under the sway of slumber.”
“अनिच्चा अद्धुवा कामा, येसु मन्दोव मुच्छितो; बद्धेसु मुत्तं असितं, कस्मा पब्बजितं तपे।
“Aniccā addhuvā kāmā, yesu mandova mucchito; Baddhesu2 muttaṁ asitaṁ, kasmā pabbajitaṁ tape.
“Sensual pleasures are impermanent and unstable, but idiots still fall for them. Among those who are bound,
छन्दरागस्स विनया, अविज्जासमतिक्कमा; तं ञाणं परमोदानं, कस्मा पब्बजितं तपे।
Chandarāgassa vinayā, avijjāsamatikkamā; Taṁ ñāṇaṁ paramodānaṁ, kasmā pabbajitaṁ tape.
By removing desire and greed, by going beyond ignorance, that knowledge has been perfectly cleansed: why bother a renunciate?
छेत्वा अविज्जं विज्जाय, आसवानं परिक्खया; असोकं अनुपायासं, कस्मा पब्बजितं तपे।
Chetvā3 avijjaṁ vijjāya, āsavānaṁ parikkhayā; Asokaṁ anupāyāsaṁ, kasmā pabbajitaṁ tape.
By breaking ignorance with knowledge, by the ending of defilements, they’re sorrowless, unstressed: why bother a renunciate?
आरद्धवीरियं पहितत्तं, निच्चं दळ्हपरक्कमं; निब्बानं अभिकङ्खन्तं, कस्मा पब्बजितं तपे”ति।
Āraddhavīriyaṁ pahitattaṁ, Niccaṁ daḷhaparakkamaṁ; Nibbānaṁ abhikaṅkhantaṁ, Kasmā pabbajitaṁ tape”ti.
Energetic, resolute, always staunchly vigorous, aspiring to Nibbana: why bother a renunciate?”
