सावत्थियं विहरति।
Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

अथ खो आयस्मा उपवाणो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा उपवाणो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:
Atha kho āyasmā upavāṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā upavāṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then Venerable Upavāna went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“सन्ति पन, भन्ते, एके समणब्राह्मणा सयङ्कतं दुक्खं पञ्ञपेन्ति। सन्ति पन, भन्ते, एके समणब्राह्मणा परङ्कतं दुक्खं पञ्ञपेन्ति। सन्ति पन, भन्ते, एके समणब्राह्मणा सयङ्कतञ्च परङ्कतञ्च दुक्खं पञ्ञपेन्ति। सन्ति पन, भन्ते, एके समणब्राह्मणा असयङ्कारं अपरङ्कारं अधिच्चसमुप्पन्नं दुक्खं पञ्ञपेन्ति।
“Santi pana, bhante, eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā sayaṅkataṁ dukkhaṁ paññapenti. Santi pana, bhante, eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā paraṅkataṁ dukkhaṁ paññapenti. Santi pana, bhante, eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā sayaṅkatañca paraṅkatañca dukkhaṁ paññapenti. Santi pana, bhante, eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā asayaṅkāraṁ aparaṅkāraṁ adhiccasamuppannaṁ dukkhaṁ paññapenti.
“Sir, there are some ascetics and brahmins who declare that suffering is made by oneself. There are some who declare that suffering is made by another. There are some who declare that suffering is made by both oneself and another. There are some who declare that suffering arises by chance, not made by oneself or another.
इध नो, भन्ते, भगवा किंवादी किमक्खायी कथं ब्याकरमाना च मयं वुत्तवादिनो चेव भगवतो अस्साम, न च भगवन्तं अभूतेन अब्भाचिक्खेय्याम, धम्मस्स चानुधम्मं ब्याकरेय्याम, न च कोचि सहधम्मिको वादानुपातो गारय्हं ठानं आगच्छेय्या”ति?
Idha no, bhante, bhagavā kiṁvādī kimakkhāyī kathaṁ byākaramānā ca mayaṁ vuttavādino ceva bhagavato assāma, na ca bhagavantaṁ abhūtena abbhācikkheyyāma, dhammassa cānudhammaṁ byākareyyāma, na ca koci sahadhammiko vādānupāto gārayhaṁ ṭhānaṁ āgaccheyyā”ti?
What does the Buddha say about this? How does he explain it? How should we answer so as to repeat what the Buddha has said, and not misrepresent him with an untruth? How should we explain in line with his teaching, with no legitimate grounds for rebuke and criticism?”
“पटिच्चसमुप्पन्नं खो, उपवाण, दुक्खं वुत्तं मया। किं पटिच्च? फस्सं पटिच्च। इति वदं वुत्तवादी चेव मे अस्स, न च मं अभूतेन अब्भाचिक्खेय्य, धम्मस्स चानुधम्मं ब्याकरेय्य, न च कोचि सहधम्मिको वादानुपातो गारय्हं ठानं आगच्छेय्य।
“Paṭiccasamuppannaṁ kho, upavāṇa, dukkhaṁ vuttaṁ mayā. Kiṁ paṭicca? Phassaṁ paṭicca. Iti vadaṁ vuttavādī ceva me assa, na ca maṁ abhūtena abbhācikkheyya, dhammassa cānudhammaṁ byākareyya, na ca koci sahadhammiko vādānupāto gārayhaṁ ṭhānaṁ āgaccheyya.
“Upavāna, I have said that suffering is dependently originated. Dependent on what? Dependent on contact. Saying this you would repeat what I have said, and not misrepresent me with an untruth. You would explain in line with my teaching, and there would be no legitimate grounds for rebuke and criticism.
तत्र, उपवाण, ये ते समणब्राह्मणा सयङ्कतं दुक्खं पञ्ञपेन्ति, तदपि फस्सपच्चया। येपि ते …पे… येपि ते …पे… येपि ते समणब्राह्मणा असयङ्कारं अपरङ्कारं अधिच्चसमुप्पन्नं दुक्खं पञ्ञपेन्ति तदपि फस्सपच्चया।
Tatra, upavāṇa, ye te samaṇabrāhmaṇā sayaṅkataṁ dukkhaṁ paññapenti, tadapi phassapaccayā. Yepi te …pe… yepi te …pe… yepi te samaṇabrāhmaṇā asayaṅkāraṁ aparaṅkāraṁ adhiccasamuppannaṁ dukkhaṁ paññapenti tadapi phassapaccayā.
In the case of those ascetics and brahmins who declare that suffering is made by oneself, that’s conditioned by contact. … In the case of those who declare that suffering arises by chance, not made by oneself or another, that’s also conditioned by contact.
तत्र, उपवाण, ये ते समणब्राह्मणा सयङ्कतं दुक्खं पञ्ञपेन्ति, ते वत अञ्ञत्र फस्सा पटिसंवेदिस्सन्तीति नेतं ठानं विज्जति। येपि ते …पे… येपि ते …पे… येपि ते समणब्राह्मणा असयङ्कारं अपरङ्कारं अधिच्चसमुप्पन्नं दुक्खं पञ्ञपेन्ति, ते वत अञ्ञत्र फस्सा पटिसंवेदिस्सन्तीति नेतं ठानं विज्जती”ति।
Tatra, upavāṇa, ye te samaṇabrāhmaṇā sayaṅkataṁ dukkhaṁ paññapenti, te vata aññatra phassā paṭisaṁvedissantīti netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati. Yepi te …pe… yepi te …pe… yepi te samaṇabrāhmaṇā asayaṅkāraṁ aparaṅkāraṁ adhiccasamuppannaṁ dukkhaṁ paññapenti, te vata aññatra phassā paṭisaṁvedissantīti netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjatī”ti.
In the case of those ascetics and brahmins who declare that suffering is made by oneself, it’s impossible that they will experience that without contact. … In the case of those who declare that suffering arises by chance, not made by oneself or another, it’s impossible that they will experience that without contact.”
