With Vakkali
एकं समयं भगवा राजगहे विहरति वेळुवने कलन्दकनिवापे।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground.
तेन खो पन समयेन आयस्मा वक्कलि कुम्भकारनिवेसने विहरति आबाधिको दुक्खितो बाळ्हगिलानो।
Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā vakkali kumbhakāranivesane viharati ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷhagilāno.
Now at that time Venerable Vakkali was staying in a potter’s shed, and he was sick, suffering, gravely ill.
अथ खो आयस्मा वक्कलि उपट्ठाके आमन्तेसि: “एथ तुम्हे, आवुसो, येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमथ; उपसङ्कमित्वा मम वचनेन भगवतो पादे सिरसा वन्दथ: ‘वक्कलि, भन्ते, भिक्खु आबाधिको दुक्खितो बाळ्हगिलानो, सो भगवतो पादे सिरसा वन्दतीऽति। एवञ्च वदेथ: ‘साधु किर, भन्ते, भगवा येन वक्कलि भिक्खु तेनुपसङ्कमतु अनुकम्पं उपादायाऽ”ति।
Atha kho āyasmā vakkali upaṭṭhāke āmantesi: “etha tumhe, āvuso, yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamatha; upasaṅkamitvā mama vacanena bhagavato pāde sirasā vandatha: ‘vakkali, bhante, bhikkhu ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷhagilāno, so bhagavato pāde sirasā vandatī’ti. Evañca vadetha: ‘sādhu kira, bhante, bhagavā yena vakkali bhikkhu tenupasaṅkamatu anukampaṁ upādāyā’”ti.
Then he addressed his carers, “Please, friends, go to the Buddha, and in my name bow with your head to his feet. Say to him: ‘Sir, the bhikkhu Vakkali is sick, suffering, and gravely ill. He bows with his head to your feet.’ And then say: ‘Sir, please go to the bhikkhu Vakkali out of compassion.’”
“एवमावुसो”ति खो ते भिक्खू आयस्मतो वक्कलिस्स पटिस्सुत्वा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदिंसु। एकमन्तं निसिन्ना खो ते भिक्खू भगवन्तं एतदवोचुं: “वक्कलि, भन्ते, भिक्खु आबाधिको दुक्खितो बाळ्हगिलानो, सो भगवतो पादे सिरसा वन्दति; एवञ्च पन वदेति: ‘साधु किर, भन्ते, भगवा येन वक्कलि भिक्खु तेनुपसङ्कमतु अनुकम्पं उपादायाऽ”ति। अधिवासेसि भगवा तुण्हीभावेन।
“Evamāvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato vakkalissa paṭissutvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu. Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ: “vakkali, bhante, bhikkhu ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷhagilāno, so bhagavato pāde sirasā vandati; evañca pana vadeti: ‘sādhu kira, bhante, bhagavā yena vakkali bhikkhu tenupasaṅkamatu anukampaṁ upādāyā’”ti. Adhivāsesi bhagavā tuṇhībhāvena.
“Yes, friend,” those monks replied. They did as he asked. The Buddha consented with silence.
अथ खो भगवा निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय येनायस्मा वक्कलि तेनुपसङ्कमि। अद्दसा खो आयस्मा वक्कलि भगवन्तं दूरतोव आगच्छन्तं। दिस्वान मञ्चके समधोसि।
Atha kho bhagavā nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya yenāyasmā vakkali tenupasaṅkami. Addasā kho āyasmā vakkali bhagavantaṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ. Disvāna mañcake1 samadhosi.
Then the Buddha robed up and, taking his bowl and robes, went to Venerable Vakkali. Venerable Vakkali saw the Buddha coming off in the distance and tried to rise on his cot.
अथ खो भगवा आयस्मन्तं वक्कलिं एतदवोच: “अलं, वक्कलि, मा त्वं मञ्चके समधोसि। सन्तिमानि आसनानि पञ्ञत्तानि; तत्थाहं निसीदिस्सामी”ति।
Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ vakkaliṁ etadavoca: “alaṁ, vakkali, mā tvaṁ mañcake samadhosi. Santimāni āsanāni paññattāni; tatthāhaṁ nisīdissāmī”ti.
But the Buddha said to him, “It’s all right, Vakkali, don’t get up. There are some seats spread out, I will sit there.”
निसीदि भगवा पञ्ञत्ते आसने। निसज्ज खो भगवा आयस्मन्तं वक्कलिं एतदवोच: “कच्चि ते, वक्कलि, खमनीयं, कच्चि यापनीयं, कच्चि दुक्खा वेदना पटिक्कमन्ति, नो अभिक्कमन्ति; पटिक्कमोसानं पञ्ञायति, नो अभिक्कमो”ति?
Nisīdi bhagavā paññatte āsane. Nisajja kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ vakkaliṁ etadavoca: “kacci te, vakkali, khamanīyaṁ, kacci yāpanīyaṁ, kacci dukkhā vedanā paṭikkamanti, no abhikkamanti; paṭikkamosānaṁ paññāyati, no abhikkamo”ti?
He sat on the seat spread out and said to Vakkali, “I hope you’re keeping well, Vakkali; I hope you’re alright. And I hope the pain is fading, not growing, that its fading is evident, not its growing.”
“न मे, भन्ते, खमनीयं, न यापनीयं; बाळ्हा मे दुक्खा वेदना अभिक्कमन्ति, नो पटिक्कमन्ति; अभिक्कमोसानं पञ्ञायति, नो पटिक्कमो”ति।
“Na me, bhante, khamanīyaṁ, na yāpanīyaṁ; bāḷhā me dukkhā vedanā abhikkamanti, no paṭikkamanti; abhikkamosānaṁ paññāyati, no paṭikkamo”ti.
“Sir, I’m not all right, I’m not getting by. My pain is terrible and growing, not fading; its growing is apparent, not its fading.”
“कच्चि ते, वक्कलि, न किञ्चि कुक्कुच्चं, न कोचि विप्पटिसारो”ति?
“Kacci te, vakkali, na kiñci kukkuccaṁ, na koci vippaṭisāro”ti?
“I hope you don’t have any remorse or regret?”
“तग्घ मे, भन्ते, अनप्पकं कुक्कुच्चं, अनप्पको विप्पटिसारो”ति।
“Taggha me, bhante, anappakaṁ kukkuccaṁ, anappako vippaṭisāro”ti.
“Indeed, sir, I have no little remorse and regret.”
“कच्चि पन तं, वक्कलि, अत्ता सीलतो न उपवदती”ति?
“Kacci pana taṁ, vakkali, attā sīlato na upavadatī”ti?
“I hope you have no reason to blame yourself when it comes to ethical conduct?”
“न खो मं, भन्ते, अत्ता सीलतो उपवदती”ति।
“Na kho maṁ, bhante, attā sīlato upavadatī”ti.
“No sir, I have no reason to blame myself when it comes to ethical conduct.”
“नो चे किर तं, वक्कलि, अत्ता सीलतो उपवदति; अथ किञ्च ते कुक्कुच्चं को च विप्पटिसारो”ति?
“No ce kira taṁ, vakkali, attā sīlato upavadati; atha kiñca te kukkuccaṁ ko ca vippaṭisāro”ti?
“In that case, Vakkali, why do you have remorse and regret?”
“चिरपटिकाहं, भन्ते, भगवन्तं दस्सनाय उपसङ्कमितुकामो, नत्थि च मे कायस्मिं तावतिका बलमत्ता, यावताहं भगवन्तं दस्सनाय उपसङ्कमेय्यन्”ति।
“Cirapaṭikāhaṁ, bhante, bhagavantaṁ dassanāya upasaṅkamitukāmo, natthi ca me kāyasmiṁ tāvatikā balamattā, yāvatāhaṁ2 bhagavantaṁ dassanāya upasaṅkameyyan”ti.
“For a long time I’ve wanted to go and see the Buddha, but I was physically too weak.”
“अलं, वक्कलि, किं ते इमिना पूतिकायेन दिट्ठेन? यो खो, वक्कलि, धम्मं पस्सति सो मं पस्सति; यो मं पस्सति सो धम्मं पस्सति। धम्मञ्हि, वक्कलि, पस्सन्तो मं पस्सति; मं पस्सन्तो धम्मं पस्सति।
“Alaṁ, vakkali, kiṁ te iminā pūtikāyena diṭṭhena? Yo kho, vakkali, dhammaṁ passati so maṁ passati; yo maṁ passati so dhammaṁ passati. Dhammañhi, vakkali, passanto maṁ passati; maṁ passanto dhammaṁ passati.
“Enough, Vakkali! Why would you want to see this rotten body? One who sees the teaching sees me. One who sees me sees the teaching. Seeing the teaching, you see me. Seeing me, you see the teaching.
तं किं मञ्ञसि, वक्कलि, रूपं निच्चं वा अनिच्चं वा”ति?
Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, vakkali, rūpaṁ niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vā”ti?
What do you think, Vakkali? Is form permanent or impermanent?”
“अनिच्चं, भन्ते”।
“Aniccaṁ, bhante”.
“Impermanent, sir.”
“यं पनानिच्चं दुक्खं वा तं सुखं वा”ति?
“Yaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vā taṁ sukhaṁ vā”ti?
“But if it’s impermanent, is it suffering or happiness?”
“दुक्खं, भन्ते”।
“Dukkhaṁ, bhante”.
“Suffering, sir.”
“यं पनानिच्चं दुक्खं विपरिणामधम्मं, कल्लं नु तं समनुपस्सितुं: ‘एतं मम, एसोहमस्मि, एसो मे अत्ताऽ”ति?
“Yaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vipariṇāmadhammaṁ, kallaṁ nu taṁ samanupassituṁ: ‘etaṁ mama, esohamasmi, eso me attā’”ti?
“But if it’s impermanent, suffering, and perishable, is it fit to be regarded thus: ‘This is mine, I am this, this is my self’?”
“नो हेतं, भन्ते”।
“No hetaṁ, bhante”.
“No, sir.”
“वेदना … सञ्ञा … सङ्खारा … विञ्ञाणं निच्चं वा अनिच्चं वा”ति?
“Vedanā … saññā … saṅkhārā … viññāṇaṁ niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vā”ti?
“Is feeling … perception … choices … consciousness permanent or impermanent?”
“अनिच्चं, भन्ते” …पे… एसो मे अत्ताति? “नो हेतं, भन्ते”।
“Aniccaṁ, bhante” …pe… eso me attāti? “No hetaṁ, bhante”.
“Impermanent, sir.” …
“तस्मातिह …पे… एवं पस्सं …पे… नापरं इत्थत्तायाति पजानाती”ति।
“Tasmātiha …pe… evaṁ passaṁ …pe… nāparaṁ itthattāyāti pajānātī”ti.
“So you should truly see … Seeing this … They understand: ‘… there is no return to any state of existence.’”
अथ खो भगवा आयस्मन्तं वक्कलिं इमिना ओवादेन ओवदित्वा उट्ठायासना येन गिज्झकूटो पब्बतो तेन पक्कामि।
Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ vakkaliṁ iminā ovādena ovaditvā uṭṭhāyāsanā yena gijjhakūṭo pabbato tena pakkāmi.
And then, after giving Venerable Vakkali this advice, the Buddha got up from his seat and went to the Vulture’s Peak Mountain.
अथ खो आयस्मा वक्कलि अचिरपक्कन्तस्स भगवतो उपट्ठाके आमन्तेसि: “एथ मं, आवुसो, मञ्चकं आरोपेत्वा येन इसिगिलिपस्सं काळसिला तेनुपसङ्कमथ। कथञ्हि नाम मादिसो अन्तरघरे कालं कत्तब्बं मञ्ञेय्या”ति?
Atha kho āyasmā vakkali acirapakkantassa bhagavato upaṭṭhāke āmantesi: “etha maṁ, āvuso, mañcakaṁ āropetvā yena isigilipassaṁ kāḷasilā tenupasaṅkamatha. Kathañhi nāma mādiso antaraghare kālaṁ kattabbaṁ maññeyyā”ti?
Then Venerable Vakkali addressed his carers, “Come on, friends, lift my cot and take me to the Black Rock on the slopes of Isigili. It’s unthinkable for one like me to die in an inhabited area!”
“एवमावुसो”ति खो ते भिक्खू आयस्मतो वक्कलिस्स पटिस्सुत्वा आयस्मन्तं वक्कलिं मञ्चकं आरोपेत्वा येन इसिगिलिपस्सं काळसिला तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु। अथ खो भगवा तञ्च रत्तिं तञ्च दिवावसेसं गिज्झकूटे पब्बते विहासि।
“Evamāvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato vakkalissa paṭissutvā āyasmantaṁ vakkaliṁ mañcakaṁ āropetvā yena isigilipassaṁ kāḷasilā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu. Atha kho bhagavā tañca rattiṁ tañca divāvasesaṁ gijjhakūṭe pabbate vihāsi.
“Yes, friend,” replied those bhikkhus, and did as he asked. Meanwhile, the Buddha spent the rest of that night and day on Vulture’s Peak Mountain.
अथ खो द्वे देवतायो अभिक्कन्ताय रत्तिया अभिक्कन्तवण्णा केवलकप्पं गिज्झकूटं ओभासेत्वा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु …पे… एकमन्तं अट्ठंसु।
Atha kho dve devatāyo abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ gijjhakūṭaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu …pe… ekamantaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu.
Then, late at night, two glorious deities, lighting up the entire Vulture’s Peak, went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side.
एकमन्तं ठिता खो एका देवता भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “वक्कलि, भन्ते, भिक्खु विमोक्खाय चेतेती”ति।
Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho ekā devatā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “vakkali, bhante, bhikkhu vimokkhāya cetetī”ti.
One deity said to him, “Sir, the bhikkhu Vakkali is intent on liberation!”
अपरा देवता भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “सो हि नून, भन्ते, सुविमुत्तो विमुच्चिस्सती”ति।
Aparā devatā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “so hi nūna, bhante, suvimutto vimuccissatī”ti.
And another deity said to him, “He’ll definitely be well-freed!”
इदमवोचुं ता देवतायो। इदं वत्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा पदक्खिणं कत्वा तत्थेवन्तरधायिंसु।
Idamavocuṁ tā devatāyo. Idaṁ vatvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā tatthevantaradhāyiṁsu.
This is what those deities said. Then they bowed and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on their right side, before vanishing right there.
अथ खो भगवा तस्सा रत्तिया अच्चयेन भिक्खू आमन्तेसि:
Atha kho bhagavā tassā rattiyā accayena bhikkhū āmantesi:
Then, when the night had passed, the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus:
“एथ तुम्हे, भिक्खवे, येन वक्कलि भिक्खु तेनुपसङ्कमथ; उपसङ्कमित्वा वक्कलिं भिक्खुं एवं वदेथ:
“etha tumhe, bhikkhave, yena vakkali bhikkhu tenupasaṅkamatha; upasaṅkamitvā vakkaliṁ bhikkhuṁ evaṁ vadetha:
“Come, bhikkhus, go to the bhikkhu Vakkali and tell him:
‘सुणावुसो त्वं, वक्कलि, भगवतो वचनं द्विन्नञ्च देवतानं।
‘Suṇāvuso tvaṁ, vakkali, bhagavato vacanaṁ dvinnañca devatānaṁ.
‘Vakkali, hear the word of the Buddha and two deities.
इमं, आवुसो, रत्तिं द्वे देवतायो अभिक्कन्ताय रत्तिया अभिक्कन्तवण्णा केवलकप्पं गिज्झकूटं ओभासेत्वा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं अट्ठंसु।
Imaṁ, āvuso, rattiṁ dve devatāyo abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ gijjhakūṭaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu.
Late last night, two glorious deities, lighting up the entire Vulture’s Peak, went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side.
एकमन्तं ठिता खो, आवुसो, एका देवता भगवन्तं एतदवोच—वक्कलि, भन्ते, भिक्खु विमोक्खाय चेतेतीति।
Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho, āvuso, ekā devatā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca—vakkali, bhante, bhikkhu vimokkhāya cetetīti.
One deity said to him, “Sir, the bhikkhu Vakkali is intent on liberation!”
अपरा देवता भगवन्तं एतदवोच—सो हि नून, भन्ते, सुविमुत्तो विमुच्चिस्सतीति।
Aparā devatā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca—so hi nūna, bhante, suvimutto vimuccissatīti.
The other deity said to him, “He’ll definitely be well-freed!”
भगवा च तं, आवुसो वक्कलि, एवमाह—मा भायि, वक्कलि; मा भायि, वक्कलि। अपापकं ते मरणं भविस्सति, अपापिका कालकिरियाऽ”ति।
Bhagavā ca taṁ, āvuso vakkali, evamāha—mā bhāyi, vakkali; mā bhāyi, vakkali. Apāpakaṁ te maraṇaṁ bhavissati, apāpikā kālakiriyā’”ti.
And the Buddha said, “Do not fear, Vakkali, do not fear! Your death will not be a bad one; your passing will not be a bad one.”’”
“एवं, भन्ते”ति खो ते भिक्खू भगवतो पटिस्सुत्वा येनायस्मा वक्कलि तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा आयस्मन्तं वक्कलिं एतदवोचुं:
“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paṭissutvā yenāyasmā vakkali tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ vakkaliṁ etadavocuṁ:
“Yes, sir,” those monks replied. They went to Vakkali and said to him:
“सुणावुसो वक्कलि, भगवतो वचनं द्विन्नञ्च देवतानन्”ति।
“suṇāvuso vakkali, bhagavato vacanaṁ dvinnañca devatānan”ti.
“Vakkali, hear the word of the Buddha and two deities.”
अथ खो आयस्मा वक्कलि उपट्ठाके आमन्तेसि: “एथ मं, आवुसो, मञ्चका ओरोपेथ। कथञ्हि नाम मादिसो उच्चे आसने निसीदित्वा तस्स भगवतो सासनं सोतब्बं मञ्ञेय्या”ति।
Atha kho āyasmā vakkali upaṭṭhāke āmantesi: “etha maṁ, āvuso, mañcakā oropetha. Kathañhi nāma mādiso ucce āsane nisīditvā tassa bhagavato sāsanaṁ sotabbaṁ maññeyyā”ti.
Then Vakkali addressed his carers, “Please, friends, help me off my cot. It’s unthinkable for one like me to listen to the Buddha’s instructions sitting on a high seat.”
“एवमावुसो”ति खो ते भिक्खू आयस्मतो वक्कलिस्स पटिस्सुत्वा आयस्मन्तं वक्कलिं मञ्चका ओरोपेसुं। “इमं, आवुसो, रत्तिं द्वे देवतायो अभिक्कन्ताय रत्तिया …पे… एकमन्तं अट्ठंसु। एकमन्तं ठिता खो, आवुसो, एका देवता भगवन्तं एतदवोच: ‘वक्कलि, भन्ते, भिक्खु विमोक्खाय चेतेतीऽति। अपरा देवता भगवन्तं एतदवोच: ‘सो हि नून, भन्ते, सुविमुत्तो विमुच्चिस्सतीऽति। भगवा च तं, आवुसो वक्कलि, एवमाह: ‘मा भायि, वक्कलि; मा भायि, वक्कलि। अपापकं ते मरणं भविस्सति, अपापिका कालकिरियाऽ”ति।
“Evamāvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato vakkalissa paṭissutvā āyasmantaṁ vakkaliṁ mañcakā oropesuṁ. “Imaṁ, āvuso, rattiṁ dve devatāyo abhikkantāya rattiyā …pe… ekamantaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu. Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho, āvuso, ekā devatā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: ‘vakkali, bhante, bhikkhu vimokkhāya cetetī’ti. Aparā devatā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: ‘so hi nūna, bhante, suvimutto vimuccissatī’ti. Bhagavā ca taṁ, āvuso vakkali, evamāha: ‘mā bhāyi, vakkali; mā bhāyi, vakkali. Apāpakaṁ te maraṇaṁ bhavissati, apāpikā kālakiriyā’”ti.
“Yes, friend,” replied those bhikkhus, and helped him off his cot. They repeated what the Buddha had said.
“तेन हावुसो, मम वचनेन भगवतो पादे सिरसा वन्दथ: ‘वक्कलि, भन्ते, भिक्खु आबाधिको दुक्खितो बाळ्हगिलानो। सो भगवतो पादे सिरसा वन्दतीऽति। एवञ्च वदेथ: ‘रूपं अनिच्चं। ताहं, भन्ते, न कङ्खामि। यदनिच्चं तं दुक्खन्ति न विचिकिच्छामि। यदनिच्चं दुक्खं विपरिणामधम्मं, नत्थि मे तत्थ छन्दो वा रागो वा पेमं वाति न विचिकिच्छामि।
“Tena hāvuso, mama vacanena bhagavato pāde sirasā vandatha: ‘vakkali, bhante, bhikkhu ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. So bhagavato pāde sirasā vandatī’ti. Evañca vadetha: ‘rūpaṁ aniccaṁ. Tāhaṁ, bhante, na kaṅkhāmi. Yadaniccaṁ taṁ dukkhanti na vicikicchāmi. Yadaniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vipariṇāmadhammaṁ, natthi me tattha chando vā rāgo vā pemaṁ vāti na vicikicchāmi.
Vakkali said, “Well then, friends, in my name bow with your head at the Buddha’s feet. Say to him: ‘Sir, the bhikkhu Vakkali is sick, suffering, gravely ill. He bows with his head to your feet.’ And then say: ‘Form is impermanent. I have no doubt of that. I’m certain that what is impermanent is suffering. And I’m certain that I have no desire or greed or fondness for what is impermanent, suffering, and perishable.

Viññāṇaṁ aniccaṁ. Tāhaṁ, bhante, na kaṅkhāmi. Yadaniccaṁ taṁ dukkhanti na vicikicchāmi. Yadaniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vipariṇāmadhammaṁ, natthi me tattha chando vā rāgo vā pemaṁ vāti na vicikicchāmī’”ti.
Consciousness is impermanent. I have no doubt of that. I’m certain that what is impermanent is suffering. And I’m certain that I have no desire or greed or fondness for what is impermanent, suffering, and perishable.’”
“एवमावुसो”ति खो ते भिक्खू आयस्मतो वक्कलिस्स पटिस्सुत्वा पक्कमिंसु। अथ खो आयस्मा वक्कलि अचिरपक्कन्तेसु तेसु भिक्खूसु सत्थं आहरेसि।
“Evamāvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato vakkalissa paṭissutvā pakkamiṁsu. Atha kho āyasmā vakkali acirapakkantesu tesu bhikkhūsu satthaṁ āharesi.
“Yes, friend,” those monks replied, and left. And then, not long after those bhikkhus had left, Venerable Vakkali slit his wrists.
अथ खो ते भिक्खू येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा एकमन्तं निसीदिंसु। एकमन्तं निसिन्ना खो ते भिक्खू भगवन्तं एतदवोचुं: “वक्कलि, भन्ते, भिक्खु आबाधिको दुक्खितो बाळ्हगिलानो; सो भगवतो पादे सिरसा वन्दति; एवञ्च वदेति: ‘रूपं अनिच्चं। ताहं, भन्ते, न कङ्खामि। यदनिच्चं तं दुक्खन्ति न विचिकिच्छामि। यदनिच्चं दुक्खं विपरिणामधम्मं, नत्थि मे तत्थ छन्दो वा रागो वा पेमं वाति न विचिकिच्छामि। वेदना … सञ्ञा … सङ्खारा … विञ्ञाणं अनिच्चं। ताहं, भन्ते, न कङ्खामि। यदनिच्चं तं दुक्खन्ति न विचिकिच्छामि। यदनिच्चं दुक्खं विपरिणामधम्मं, नत्थि मे तत्थ छन्दो वा रागो वा पेमं वाति न विचिकिच्छामीऽ”ति।
Atha kho te bhikkhū yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu. Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ: “vakkali, bhante, bhikkhu ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷhagilāno; so bhagavato pāde sirasā vandati; evañca vadeti: ‘rūpaṁ aniccaṁ. Tāhaṁ, bhante, na kaṅkhāmi. Yadaniccaṁ taṁ dukkhanti na vicikicchāmi. Yadaniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vipariṇāmadhammaṁ, natthi me tattha chando vā rāgo vā pemaṁ vāti na vicikicchāmi. Vedanā … saññā … saṅkhārā … viññāṇaṁ aniccaṁ. Tāhaṁ, bhante, na kaṅkhāmi. Yadaniccaṁ taṁ dukkhanti na vicikicchāmi. Yadaniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vipariṇāmadhammaṁ, natthi me tattha chando vā rāgo vā pemaṁ vāti na vicikicchāmī’”ti.
Then those bhikkhus went up to the Buddha and told him Vakkali’s message.
अथ खो भगवा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “आयाम, भिक्खवे, येन इसिगिलिपस्सं काळसिला तेनुपसङ्कमिस्साम; यत्थ वक्कलिना कुलपुत्तेन सत्थमाहरितन्”ति।
Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “āyāma, bhikkhave, yena isigilipassaṁ kāḷasilā tenupasaṅkamissāma; yattha vakkalinā kulaputtena satthamāharitan”ti.
Then the Buddha said to the bhikkhus, “Come, bhikkhus, let’s go to the Black Rock on the slopes of Isigili, where Vakkali, the gentleman, slit his wrists.”
“एवं, भन्ते”ति खो ते भिक्खू भगवतो पच्चस्सोसुं।
“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.
“Yes, sir,” they replied.
अथ खो भगवा सम्बहुलेहि भिक्खूहि सद्धिं येन इसिगिलिपस्सं काळसिला तेनुपसङ्कमि। अद्दसा खो भगवा आयस्मन्तं वक्कलिं दूरतोव मञ्चके विवत्तक्खन्धं सेमानं।
Atha kho bhagavā sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ yena isigilipassaṁ kāḷasilā tenupasaṅkami. Addasā kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ vakkaliṁ dūratova mañcake vivattakkhandhaṁ semānaṁ.
Then the Buddha together with several bhikkhus went to the Black Rock on the slopes of Isigili. The Buddha saw Vakkali off in the distance lying on his cot, having cast off the aggregates.
तेन खो पन समयेन धूमायितत्तं तिमिरायितत्तं गच्छतेव पुरिमं दिसं, गच्छति पच्छिमं दिसं, गच्छति उत्तरं दिसं, गच्छति दक्खिणं दिसं, गच्छति उद्धं दिसं, गच्छति अधो दिसं, गच्छति अनुदिसं।
Tena kho pana samayena dhūmāyitattaṁ timirāyitattaṁ gacchateva purimaṁ disaṁ, gacchati pacchimaṁ disaṁ, gacchati uttaraṁ disaṁ, gacchati dakkhiṇaṁ disaṁ, gacchati uddhaṁ disaṁ, gacchati adho disaṁ, gacchati anudisaṁ.
Now at that time a cloud of black smoke was moving east, west, north, south, above, below, and in-between.
अथ खो भगवा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “पस्सथ नो तुम्हे, भिक्खवे, एतं धूमायितत्तं तिमिरायितत्तं गच्छतेव पुरिमं दिसं …पे… गच्छति अनुदिसन्”ति।
Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, etaṁ dhūmāyitattaṁ timirāyitattaṁ gacchateva purimaṁ disaṁ …pe… gacchati anudisan”ti.
The Buddha said to the bhikkhus, “Bhikkhus, do you see that cloud of black smoke moving east, west, north, south, above, below, and in-between?”
“एवं, भन्ते”।
“Evaṁ, bhante”.
“Yes, sir.”
“एसो खो, भिक्खवे, मारो पापिमा वक्कलिस्स कुलपुत्तस्स विञ्ञाणं समन्वेसति: ‘कत्थ वक्कलिस्स कुलपुत्तस्स विञ्ञाणं पतिट्ठितन्ऽति? अप्पतिट्ठितेन च, भिक्खवे, विञ्ञाणेन वक्कलि कुलपुत्तो परिनिब्बुतो”ति।
“Eso kho, bhikkhave, māro pāpimā vakkalissa kulaputtassa viññāṇaṁ samanvesati: ‘kattha vakkalissa kulaputtassa viññāṇaṁ patiṭṭhitan’ti? Appatiṭṭhitena ca, bhikkhave, viññāṇena vakkali kulaputto parinibbuto”ti.
“That’s Māra the Wicked searching for Vakkali’s consciousness, wondering: ‘Where is Vakkali’s consciousness established?’ But since his consciousness is not established, Vakkali is extinguished.”
