    Splitting Hairs

    एकं समयं भगवा वेसालियं विहरति महावने कूटागारसालायं।

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ.

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.

    अथ खो आयस्मा आनन्दो पुब्बण्हसमयं निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय वेसालिं पिण्डाय पाविसि। अद्दसा खो आयस्मा आनन्दो सम्बहुले लिच्छविकुमारके सन्थागारे उपासनं करोन्ते, दूरतोव सुखुमेन ताळच्छिग्गळेन असनं अतिपातेन्ते, पोङ्खानुपोङ्खं अविराधितं।

    Atha kho āyasmā ānando pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya vesāliṁ piṇḍāya pāvisi. Addasā kho āyasmā ānando sambahule licchavikumārake santhāgāre upāsanaṁ karonte, dūratova sukhumena tāḷacchiggaḷena asanaṁ atipātente, poṅkhānupoṅkhaṁ1 avirādhitaṁ.

    Then Venerable Ānanda robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Vesālī for alms. He saw several Licchavi youths practicing archery near the town hall. They were shooting arrows from a distance through a small keyhole, shot after shot without missing.

    दिस्वानस्स एतदहोसि: “सिक्खिता वतिमे लिच्छविकुमारका, सुसिक्खिता वतिमे लिच्छविकुमारका; यत्र हि नाम दूरतोव सुखुमेन ताळच्छिग्गळेन असनं अतिपातेस्सन्ति पोङ्खानुपोङ्खं अविराधितन्”ति।

    Disvānassa etadahosi: “sikkhitā vatime licchavikumārakā, susikkhitā vatime licchavikumārakā; yatra hi nāma dūratova sukhumena tāḷacchiggaḷena asanaṁ atipātessanti poṅkhānupoṅkhaṁ avirādhitan”ti.

    When he saw this he thought, “These Licchavi youths really are trained, so well trained, in that they shoot arrows from a distance through a small keyhole, shot after shot without missing.”

    अथ खो आयस्मा आनन्दो वेसालिं पिण्डाय चरित्वा पच्छाभत्तं पिण्डपातपटिक्कन्तो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा आनन्दो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “इधाहं, भन्ते, पुब्बण्हसमयं निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय वेसालिं पिण्डाय पाविसिं। अद्दसं ख्वाहं, भन्ते, सम्बहुले लिच्छविकुमारके सन्थागारे उपासनं करोन्ते दूरतोव सुखुमेन ताळच्छिग्गळेन असनं अतिपातेन्ते पोङ्खानुपोङ्खं अविराधितं। दिस्वान मे एतदहोसि: ‘सिक्खिता वतिमे लिच्छविकुमारका, सुसिक्खिता वतिमे लिच्छविकुमारका; यत्र हि नाम दूरतोव सुखुमेन ताळच्छिग्गळेन असनं अतिपातेस्सन्ति पोङ्खानुपोङ्खं अविराधितन्ऽ”ति।

    Atha kho āyasmā ānando vesāliṁ piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṁ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “idhāhaṁ, bhante, pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya vesāliṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ. Addasaṁ khvāhaṁ, bhante, sambahule licchavikumārake santhāgāre upāsanaṁ karonte dūratova sukhumena tāḷacchiggaḷena asanaṁ atipātente poṅkhānupoṅkhaṁ avirādhitaṁ. Disvāna me etadahosi: ‘sikkhitā vatime licchavikumārakā, susikkhitā vatime licchavikumārakā; yatra hi nāma dūratova sukhumena tāḷacchiggaḷena asanaṁ atipātessanti poṅkhānupoṅkhaṁ avirādhitan’”ti.

    Then Ānanda wandered for alms in Vesālī. After the meal, on his return from almsround, he went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened.

    “तं किं मञ्ञसि, आनन्द, कतमं नु खो दुक्करतरं वा दुरभिसम्भवतरं वा—यो दूरतोव सुखुमेन ताळच्छिग्गळेन असनं अतिपातेय्य पोङ्खानुपोङ्खं अविराधितं, यो वा सत्तधा भिन्नस्स वालस्स कोटिया कोटिं पटिविज्झेय्या”ति?

    “Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, ānanda, katamaṁ nu kho dukkarataraṁ vā durabhisambhavataraṁ vā—yo dūratova sukhumena tāḷacchiggaḷena asanaṁ atipāteyya poṅkhānupoṅkhaṁ avirādhitaṁ, yo vā sattadhā2 bhinnassa vālassa koṭiyā koṭiṁ paṭivijjheyyā”ti?

    “What do you think, Ānanda? Which is harder and more challenging: to shoot arrows from a distance through a small keyhole, shot after shot without missing? Or to take a horsehair split into seven strands and penetrate one tip with another tip?”

    “एतदेव, भन्ते, दुक्करतरञ्चेव दुरभिसम्भवतरञ्च यो वा सत्तधा भिन्नस्स वालस्स कोटिया कोटिं पटिविज्झेय्या”ति।

    “Etadeva, bhante, dukkaratarañceva durabhisambhavatarañca yo vā sattadhā bhinnassa vālassa koṭiyā koṭiṁ paṭivijjheyyā”ti.

    “It’s more difficult and challenging, sir, to take a horsehair split into seven strands and penetrate one tip with another tip.”

    “अथ खो, आनन्द, दुप्पटिविज्झतरं पटिविज्झन्ति, ये ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति यथाभूतं पटिविज्झन्ति …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति यथाभूतं पटिविज्झन्ति।

    “Atha kho, ānanda, duppaṭivijjhataraṁ paṭivijjhanti, ye ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yathābhūtaṁ paṭivijjhanti …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yathābhūtaṁ paṭivijjhanti.

    “Still, Ānanda, those who truly penetrate suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path penetrate something tougher than that.

    तस्मातिहानन्द, ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति योगो करणीयो …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति योगो करणीयो”ति।

    Tasmātihānanda, ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yogo karaṇīyo …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yogo karaṇīyo”ti.

    That’s why you should practice meditation …”
