    Vassavalāhakasutta

    Gods of the Rainy Clouds

    सावत्थिनिदानं।

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

    एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो सो भिक्खु भगवन्तं एतदवोच:

    Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    Seated to one side, that bhikkhu said to the Buddha:

    “को नु खो, भन्ते, हेतु, को पच्चयो, येनेकदा देवो वस्सती”ति?

    “ko nu kho, bhante, hetu, ko paccayo, yenekadā devo vassatī”ti?

    “Sir, what is the cause, what is the reason why sometimes it rains?”

    “सन्ति, भिक्खु, वस्सवलाहका नाम देवा। तेसं यदा एवं होति: ‘यन्नून मयं सकाय रतिया वसेय्यामाऽति, तेसं तं चेतोपणिधिमन्वाय देवो वस्सति। अयं खो, भिक्खु, हेतु, अयं पच्चयो, येनेकदा देवो वस्सती”ति।

    “Santi, bhikkhu, vassavalāhakā nāma devā. Tesaṁ yadā evaṁ hoti: ‘yannūna mayaṁ sakāya ratiyā vaseyyāmā’ti, tesaṁ taṁ cetopaṇidhimanvāya devo vassati. Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhu, hetu, ayaṁ paccayo, yenekadā devo vassatī”ti.

    “Bhikkhu, there are what are called gods of the rainy clouds. Sometimes they think: ‘Why don’t we revel in our own kind of enjoyment?’ Then, in accordance with their wish, it becomes rainy. This is the cause, this is the reason why sometimes it rains.”

    सत्तपञ्ञासमं।

    Sattapaññāsamaṁ.

    सत्तपञ्ञाससुत्तन्तं निट्ठितं।

    Sattapaññāsasuttantaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ.

    वलाहकवग्गो पठमो।

    Valāhakavaggo paṭhamo.

    तस्सुद्दानं

    Tassuddānaṁ

    सुद्धिकं सुचरितञ्च, दानूपकारपञ्ञासं; सीतं उण्हञ्च अब्भञ्च, वातवस्सवलाहकाति।

    Suddhikaṁ sucaritañca, dānūpakārapaññāsaṁ; Sītaṁ uṇhañca abbhañca, vātavassavalāhakāti.

    वलाहकसंयुत्तं समत्तं।

    Valāhakasaṁyuttaṁ samattaṁ.
