Mount Vepulla
एकं समयं भगवा राजगहे विहरति गिज्झकूटे पब्बते। तत्र खो भगवा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “भिक्खवो”ति।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati gijjhakūṭe pabbate. Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “bhikkhavo”ti.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vulture’s Peak Mountain. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus, “Bhikkhus!”
“भदन्ते”ति ते भिक्खू भगवतो पच्चस्सोसुं। भगवा एतदवोच:
“Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ. Bhagavā etadavoca:
“Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:
“अनमतग्गोयं, भिक्खवे, संसारो। पुब्बा कोटि न पञ्ञायति अविज्जानीवरणानं सत्तानं तण्हासंयोजनानं सन्धावतं संसरतं। भूतपुब्बं, भिक्खवे, इमस्स वेपुल्लस्स पब्बतस्स ‘पाचीनवंसोऽत्वेव समञ्ञा उदपादि। तेन खो पन, भिक्खवे, समयेन मनुस्सानं ‘तिवराऽत्वेव समञ्ञा उदपादि। तिवरानं, भिक्खवे, मनुस्सानं चत्तारीस वस्ससहस्सानि आयुप्पमाणं अहोसि। तिवरा, भिक्खवे, मनुस्सा पाचीनवंसं पब्बतं चतूहेन आरोहन्ति, चतूहेन ओरोहन्ति। तेन खो पन, भिक्खवे, समयेन ककुसन्धो भगवा अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो लोके उप्पन्नो होति। ककुसन्धस्स, भिक्खवे, भगवतो अरहतो सम्मासम्बुद्धस्स विधुरसञ्जीवं नाम सावकयुगं अहोसि अग्गं भद्दयुगं। पस्सथ, भिक्खवे, सा चेविमस्स पब्बतस्स समञ्ञा अन्तरहिता, ते च मनुस्सा कालङ्कता, सो च भगवा परिनिब्बुतो। एवं अनिच्चा, भिक्खवे, सङ्खारा; एवं अद्धुवा, भिक्खवे, सङ्खारा; एवं अनस्सासिका, भिक्खवे, सङ्खारा। यावञ्चिदं, भिक्खवे, अलमेव सब्बसङ्खारेसु निब्बिन्दितुं, अलं विरज्जितुं, अलं विमुच्चितुं।
“Anamataggoyaṁ, bhikkhave, saṁsāro. Pubbā koṭi na paññāyati avijjānīvaraṇānaṁ sattānaṁ taṇhāsaṁyojanānaṁ sandhāvataṁ saṁsarataṁ. Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, imassa vepullassa pabbatassa ‘pācīnavaṁso’tveva samaññā udapādi. Tena kho pana, bhikkhave, samayena manussānaṁ ‘tivarā’tveva samaññā udapādi. Tivarānaṁ, bhikkhave, manussānaṁ cattārīsa vassasahassāni āyuppamāṇaṁ ahosi. Tivarā, bhikkhave, manussā pācīnavaṁsaṁ pabbataṁ catūhena ārohanti, catūhena orohanti. Tena kho pana, bhikkhave, samayena kakusandho bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho loke uppanno hoti. Kakusandhassa, bhikkhave, bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa vidhurasañjīvaṁ nāma sāvakayugaṁ ahosi aggaṁ bhaddayugaṁ. Passatha, bhikkhave, sā cevimassa pabbatassa samaññā antarahitā, te ca manussā kālaṅkatā, so ca bhagavā parinibbuto. Evaṁ aniccā, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā; evaṁ addhuvā, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā; evaṁ anassāsikā, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā. Yāvañcidaṁ, bhikkhave, alameva sabbasaṅkhāresu nibbindituṁ, alaṁ virajjituṁ, alaṁ vimuccituṁ.
“Bhikkhus, transmigration has no known beginning. No first point is found of sentient beings roaming and transmigrating, shrouded by ignorance and fettered by craving. Once upon a time, bhikkhus, this Mount Vepulla was known as Pācīnavaṁsa. And at that time people were known as Tivaras. The lifespan of the Tivaras was 40,000 years. It took them four days to climb Mount Vepulla, and four days to descend. At that time Kakusandha, the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha arose in the world. Kakusandha had a fine pair of chief disciples named Vidhura and Sañjīva. See, bhikkhus! This mountain’s name has vanished, those people have passed away, and that Buddha has become fully extinguished. So impermanent are conditions, so unstable are conditions, so unreliable are conditions. This is quite enough for you to become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed regarding all conditions.
भूतपुब्बं, भिक्खवे, इमस्स वेपुल्लस्स पब्बतस्स ‘वङ्ककोऽत्वेव समञ्ञा उदपादि। तेन खो पन, भिक्खवे, समयेन मनुस्सानं ‘रोहितस्साऽत्वेव समञ्ञा उदपादि। रोहितस्सानं, भिक्खवे, मनुस्सानं तिंसवस्ससहस्सानि आयुप्पमाणं अहोसि। रोहितस्सा, भिक्खवे, मनुस्सा वङ्ककं पब्बतं तीहेन आरोहन्ति, तीहेन ओरोहन्ति। तेन खो पन, भिक्खवे, समयेन कोणागमनो भगवा अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो लोके उप्पन्नो होति। कोणागमनस्स, भिक्खवे, भगवतो अरहतो सम्मासम्बुद्धस्स भिय्योसुत्तरं नाम सावकयुगं अहोसि अग्गं भद्दयुगं। पस्सथ, भिक्खवे, सा चेविमस्स पब्बतस्स समञ्ञा अन्तरहिता, ते च मनुस्सा कालङ्कता, सो च भगवा परिनिब्बुतो। एवं अनिच्चा, भिक्खवे, सङ्खारा …पे… अलं विमुच्चितुं।

Tena kho pana, bhikkhave, samayena koṇāgamano bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho loke uppanno hoti. Koṇāgamanassa, bhikkhave, bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa bhiyyosuttaraṁ nāma sāvakayugaṁ ahosi aggaṁ bhaddayugaṁ. Passatha, bhikkhave, sā cevimassa pabbatassa samaññā antarahitā, te ca manussā kālaṅkatā, so ca bhagavā parinibbuto. Evaṁ aniccā, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā …pe… alaṁ vimuccituṁ.
Once upon a time this Mount Vepulla was known as Vaṅkaka. And at that time people were known as Rohitassas. The lifespan of the Rohitassas was 30,000 years. It took them three days to climb Mount Vepulla, and three days to descend. At that time Koṇāgamana, the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha arose in the world. Koṇāgamana had a fine pair of chief disciples named Bhiyyosa and Uttara. See, bhikkhus! This mountain’s name has vanished, those people have passed away, and that Buddha has become fully extinguished. So impermanent are conditions …
भूतपुब्बं, भिक्खवे, इमस्स वेपुल्लस्स पब्बतस्स ‘सुपस्सोऽत्वेव समञ्ञा उदपादि। तेन खो पन, भिक्खवे, समयेन मनुस्सानं ‘सुप्पियाऽत्वेव समञ्ञा उदपादि। सुप्पियानं, भिक्खवे, मनुस्सानं वीसतिवस्ससहस्सानि आयुप्पमाणं अहोसि। सुप्पिया, भिक्खवे, मनुस्सा सुपस्सं पब्बतं द्वीहेन आरोहन्ति, द्वीहेन ओरोहन्ति। तेन खो पन, भिक्खवे, समयेन कस्सपो भगवा अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो लोके उप्पन्नो होति। कस्सपस्स, भिक्खवे, भगवतो अरहतो सम्मासम्बुद्धस्स तिस्सभारद्वाजं नाम सावकयुगं अहोसि अग्गं भद्दयुगं। पस्सथ, भिक्खवे, सा चेविमस्स पब्बतस्स समञ्ञा अन्तरहिता, ते च मनुस्सा कालङ्कता, सो च भगवा परिनिब्बुतो। एवं अनिच्चा, भिक्खवे, सङ्खारा; एवं अद्धुवा, भिक्खवे, सङ्खारा …पे… अलं विमुच्चितुं।

Suppiyānaṁ, bhikkhave, manussānaṁ vīsativassasahassāni āyuppamāṇaṁ ahosi. Suppiyā, bhikkhave, manussā supassaṁ pabbataṁ dvīhena ārohanti, dvīhena orohanti. Tena kho pana, bhikkhave, samayena kassapo bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho loke uppanno hoti. Kassapassa, bhikkhave, bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa tissabhāradvājaṁ nāma sāvakayugaṁ ahosi aggaṁ bhaddayugaṁ. Passatha, bhikkhave, sā cevimassa pabbatassa samaññā antarahitā, te ca manussā kālaṅkatā, so ca bhagavā parinibbuto. Evaṁ aniccā, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā; evaṁ addhuvā, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā …pe… alaṁ vimuccituṁ.
Once upon a time this Mount Vepulla was known as Supassa. And at that time people were known as Suppiyas. The lifespan of the Suppiyas was 20,000 years. It took them two days to climb Mount Vepulla, and two days to descend. At that time Kassapa, the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha arose in the world. Kassapa had a fine pair of chief disciples named Tissa and Bhāradvāja. See, bhikkhus! This mountain’s name has vanished, those people have passed away, and that Buddha has become fully extinguished. So impermanent are conditions …
एतरहि खो पन, भिक्खवे, इमस्स वेपुल्लस्स पब्बतस्स ‘वेपुल्लोऽत्वेव समञ्ञा उदपादि। एतरहि खो पन, भिक्खवे, इमेसं मनुस्सानं ‘मागधकाऽत्वेव समञ्ञा उदपादि। मागधकानं, भिक्खवे, मनुस्सानं अप्पकं आयुप्पमाणं परित्तं लहुकं; यो चिरं जीवति सो वस्ससतं अप्पं वा भिय्यो। मागधका, भिक्खवे, मनुस्सा वेपुल्लं पब्बतं मुहुत्तेन आरोहन्ति मुहुत्तेन ओरोहन्ति। एतरहि खो पनाहं, भिक्खवे, अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो लोके उप्पन्नो। मय्हं खो पन, भिक्खवे, सारिपुत्तमोग्गल्लानं नाम सावकयुगं अग्गं भद्दयुगं। भविस्सति, भिक्खवे, सो समयो या अयञ्चेविमस्स पब्बतस्स समञ्ञा अन्तरधायिस्सति, इमे च मनुस्सा कालं करिस्सन्ति, अहञ्च परिनिब्बायिस्सामि। एवं अनिच्चा, भिक्खवे, सङ्खारा; एवं अद्धुवा, भिक्खवे, सङ्खारा; एवं अनस्सासिका, भिक्खवे, सङ्खारा। यावञ्चिदं, भिक्खवे, अलमेव सब्बसङ्खारेसु निब्बिन्दितुं, अलं विरज्जितुं, अलं विमुच्चितुन्”ति।
Etarahi kho pana, bhikkhave, imassa vepullassa pabbatassa ‘vepullo’tveva samaññā udapādi. Etarahi kho pana, bhikkhave, imesaṁ manussānaṁ ‘māgadhakā’tveva samaññā udapādi. Māgadhakānaṁ, bhikkhave, manussānaṁ appakaṁ āyuppamāṇaṁ parittaṁ lahukaṁ; yo ciraṁ jīvati so vassasataṁ appaṁ vā bhiyyo. Māgadhakā, bhikkhave, manussā vepullaṁ pabbataṁ muhuttena ārohanti muhuttena orohanti. Etarahi kho panāhaṁ, bhikkhave, arahaṁ sammāsambuddho loke uppanno. Mayhaṁ kho pana, bhikkhave, sāriputtamoggallānaṁ nāma sāvakayugaṁ aggaṁ bhaddayugaṁ. Bhavissati, bhikkhave, so samayo yā ayañcevimassa pabbatassa samaññā antaradhāyissati, ime ca manussā kālaṁ karissanti, ahañca parinibbāyissāmi. Evaṁ aniccā, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā; evaṁ addhuvā, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā; evaṁ anassāsikā, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā. Yāvañcidaṁ, bhikkhave, alameva sabbasaṅkhāresu nibbindituṁ, alaṁ virajjituṁ, alaṁ vimuccitun”ti.
These days this Mount Vepulla is known as Vepulla. And these people are known as Magadhans. The lifespan of the Magadhans is short, brief, and fleeting. A long life is a hundred years or a little more. It takes the Magadhans an hour to climb Mount Vepulla, and an hour to descend. And now I am the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha who has arisen in the world. I have a fine pair of chief disciples named Sāriputta and Moggallāna. There will come a time when this mountain’s name will vanish, those people will die, and I will be fully extinguished. So impermanent are conditions, so unstable are conditions, so unreliable are conditions. This is quite enough for you to become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed regarding all conditions.”
इदमवोच भगवा। इदं वत्वान सुगतो अथापरं एतदवोच सत्था:
Idamavoca bhagavā. Idaṁ vatvāna sugato athāparaṁ etadavoca satthā:
That is what the Buddha said. Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:
“पाचीनवंसो तिवरानं, रोहितस्सान वङ्कको; सुप्पियानं सुपस्सोति, मागधानञ्च वेपुल्लो।
“Pācīnavaṁso tivarānaṁ, rohitassāna vaṅkako; Suppiyānaṁ supassoti, māgadhānañca vepullo.
“For the Tivaras it was Pācīnavaṁsa, for the Rohitassa, Vaṅkaka, Supassa for the Suppiyas, and Vepulla for the Magadhans.
अनिच्चा वत सङ्खारा, उप्पादवयधम्मिनो; उप्पज्जित्वा निरुज्झन्ति, तेसं वूपसमो सुखो”ति।
Aniccā vata saṅkhārā, uppādavayadhammino; Uppajjitvā nirujjhanti, tesaṁ vūpasamo sukho”ti.
Oh! Conditions are impermanent, their nature is to rise and fall; having arisen, they cease; their stilling is true bliss.”
