Yodhājīvasutta
A Warrior
अथ खो योधाजीवो गामणि येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा …पे… एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो योधाजीवो गामणि भगवन्तं एतदवोच:
Atha kho yodhājīvo gāmaṇi yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho yodhājīvo gāmaṇi bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then Dustin the warrior chief went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“सुतं मेतं, भन्ते, पुब्बकानं आचरियपाचरियानं योधाजीवानं भासमानानं: ‘यो सो योधाजीवो सङ्गामे उस्सहति वायमति, तमेनं उस्सहन्तं वायमन्तं परे हनन्ति परियापादेन्ति, सो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा परजितानं देवानं सहब्यतं उपपज्जतीऽति। इध भगवा किमाहा”ति?
“sutaṁ metaṁ, bhante, pubbakānaṁ ācariyapācariyānaṁ yodhājīvānaṁ bhāsamānānaṁ: ‘yo so yodhājīvo saṅgāme ussahati vāyamati, tamenaṁ ussahantaṁ vāyamantaṁ pare hananti pariyāpādenti, so kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā parajitānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjatī’ti. Idha bhagavā kimāhā”ti?
“Sir, I have heard that the warriors of the past who were teachers of teachers said: ‘Suppose a warrior, while striving and struggling in battle, is killed and finished off by his foes. When his body breaks up, after death, he’s reborn in the company of the gods of the fallen.’ What does the Buddha say about this?”
“अलं, गामणि, तिट्ठतेतं; मा मं एतं पुच्छी”ति।
“Alaṁ, gāmaṇi, tiṭṭhatetaṁ; mā maṁ etaṁ pucchī”ti.
“Enough, chief, let it be. Don’t ask me that.”

For a second time …
ततियम्पि खो योधाजीवो गामणि भगवन्तं एतदवोच:
tatiyampi kho yodhājīvo gāmaṇi bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
And for a third time the warrior chief said to the Buddha:
“सुतं मेतं, भन्ते, पुब्बकानं आचरियपाचरियानं योधाजीवानं भासमानानं: ‘यो सो योधाजीवो सङ्गामे उस्सहति वायमति, तमेनं उस्सहन्तं वायमन्तं परे हनन्ति परियापादेन्ति, सो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा परजितानं देवानं सहब्यतं उपपज्जतीऽति। इध भगवा किमाहा”ति?

“अद्धा खो त्याहं, गामणि, न लभामि: ‘अलं, गामणि, तिट्ठतेतं; मा मं एतं पुच्छीऽति। अपि च त्याहं ब्याकरिस्सामि।
“Addhā kho tyāhaṁ, gāmaṇi, na labhāmi: ‘alaṁ, gāmaṇi, tiṭṭhatetaṁ; mā maṁ etaṁ pucchī’ti. Api ca tyāhaṁ byākarissāmi.
“Clearly, chief, I’m not getting through to you when I say: ‘Enough, chief, let it be. Don’t ask me that.’ Nevertheless, I will answer you.
यो सो, गामणि, योधाजीवो सङ्गामे उस्सहति वायमति, तस्स तं चित्तं पुब्बे गहितं दुक्कटं दुप्पणिहितं: ‘इमे सत्ता हञ्ञन्तु वा बज्झन्तु वा उच्छिज्जन्तु वा विनस्सन्तु वा मा वा अहेसुं इति वाऽति। तमेनं उस्सहन्तं वायमन्तं परे हनन्ति परियापादेन्ति; सो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा परजितो नाम निरयो तत्थ उपपज्जतीति।
Yo so, gāmaṇi, yodhājīvo saṅgāme ussahati vāyamati, tassa taṁ cittaṁ pubbe gahitaṁ1 dukkaṭaṁ duppaṇihitaṁ: ‘ime sattā haññantu vā bajjhantu vā ucchijjantu vā vinassantu vā mā vā ahesuṁ iti vā’ti. Tamenaṁ ussahantaṁ vāyamantaṁ pare hananti pariyāpādenti; so kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā parajito nāma nirayo tattha upapajjatīti.
When a warrior strives and struggles in battle, their mind is already low, degraded, and misdirected as they think: ‘May these sentient beings be killed, slaughtered, slain, destroyed, or annihilated!’ His foes kill him and finish him off, and when his body breaks up, after death, he’s reborn in the hell called ‘The Fallen’.
सचे खो पनस्स एवं दिट्ठि होति: ‘यो सो योधाजीवो सङ्गामे उस्सहति वायमति तमेनं उस्सहन्तं वायमन्तं परे हनन्ति परियापादेन्ति, सो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा परजितानं देवानं सहब्यतं उपपज्जतीऽति, सास्स होति मिच्छादिट्ठि। मिच्छादिट्ठिकस्स खो पनाहं, गामणि, पुरिसपुग्गलस्स द्विन्नं गतीनं अञ्ञतरं गतिं वदामि—निरयं वा तिरच्छानयोनिं वा”ति।
Sace kho panassa evaṁ diṭṭhi hoti: ‘yo so yodhājīvo saṅgāme ussahati vāyamati tamenaṁ ussahantaṁ vāyamantaṁ pare hananti pariyāpādenti, so kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā parajitānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjatī’ti, sāssa hoti micchādiṭṭhi. Micchādiṭṭhikassa kho panāhaṁ, gāmaṇi, purisapuggalassa dvinnaṁ gatīnaṁ aññataraṁ gatiṁ vadāmi—nirayaṁ vā tiracchānayoniṁ vā”ti.
But if you have such a view: ‘Suppose a warrior, while striving and struggling in battle, is killed and finished off by his foes. When his body breaks up, after death, he’s reborn in the company of the gods of the fallen.’ This is your wrong view. An individual with wrong view is reborn in one of two places, I say: hell or the animal realm.”
एवं वुत्ते, योधाजीवो गामणि परोदि, अस्सूनि पवत्तेसि।
Evaṁ vutte, yodhājīvo gāmaṇi parodi, assūni pavattesi.
When he said this, Dustin the warrior chief cried and burst out in tears.
“एतं खो त्याहं, गामणि, नालत्थं: ‘अलं, गामणि, तिट्ठतेतं; मा मं एतं पुच्छीऽ”ति।
“Etaṁ kho tyāhaṁ, gāmaṇi, nālatthaṁ: ‘alaṁ, gāmaṇi, tiṭṭhatetaṁ; mā maṁ etaṁ pucchī’”ti.
“This is what I didn’t get through to you when I said: ‘Enough, chief, let it be. Don’t ask me that.’”
“नाहं, भन्ते, एतं रोदामि यं मं भगवा एवमाह; अपि चाहं, भन्ते, पुब्बकेहि आचरियपाचरियेहि योधाजीवेहि दीघरत्तं निकतो वञ्चितो पलुद्धो: ‘यो सो योधाजीवो सङ्गामे उस्सहति वायमति, तमेनं उस्सहन्तं वायमन्तं परे हनन्ति परियापादेन्ति, सो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा परजितानं देवानं सहब्यतं उपपज्जतीऽ”ति।
“Nāhaṁ, bhante, etaṁ rodāmi yaṁ maṁ bhagavā evamāha; api cāhaṁ, bhante, pubbakehi ācariyapācariyehi yodhājīvehi dīgharattaṁ nikato vañcito paluddho: ‘yo so yodhājīvo saṅgāme ussahati vāyamati, tamenaṁ ussahantaṁ vāyamantaṁ pare hananti pariyāpādenti, so kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā parajitānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjatī’”ti.
“Sir, I’m not crying because of what the Buddha said. But sir, for a long time I’ve been cheated, tricked, and deceived by the warriors of the past who were teachers of teachers, who said: ‘Suppose a warrior, while striving and struggling in battle, is killed and finished off by his foes. When his body breaks up, after death, he’s reborn in the company of the gods of the fallen.’
“अभिक्कन्तं, भन्ते …पे… अज्जतग्गे पाणुपेतं सरणं गतन्”ति।
“Abhikkantaṁ, bhante …pe… ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.
Excellent, sir! Excellent! … From this day forth, may the Buddha remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
