    The Best Thing

    “छहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु अभब्बो अग्गं धम्मं अरहत्तं सच्छिकातुं। कतमेहि छहि? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु अस्सद्धो होति, अहिरिको होति, अनोत्तप्पी होति, कुसीतो होति, दुप्पञ्ञो होति, काये च जीविते च सापेक्खो होति। इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, छहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु अभब्बो अग्गं धम्मं अरहत्तं सच्छिकातुं।

    “Chahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu abhabbo aggaṁ dhammaṁ arahattaṁ sacchikātuṁ. Katamehi chahi? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu assaddho hoti, ahiriko hoti, anottappī hoti, kusīto hoti, duppañño hoti, kāye ca jīvite ca sāpekkho hoti. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, chahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu abhabbo aggaṁ dhammaṁ arahattaṁ sacchikātuṁ.

    “Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu with six qualities can’t realize the best thing, perfection. What six? It’s when a bhikkhu is faithless, shameless, imprudent, lazy, and witless. And they’re concerned with their body and their life. A bhikkhu with these six qualities can’t realize the best thing, perfection.

    छहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु भब्बो अग्गं धम्मं अरहत्तं सच्छिकातुं। कतमेहि छहि? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सद्धो होति, हिरीमा होति, ओत्तप्पी होति, आरद्धवीरियो होति, पञ्ञवा होति, काये च जीविते च अनपेक्खो होति। इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, छहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु भब्बो अग्गं धम्मं अरहत्तं सच्छिकातुन्”ति।

    Chahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu bhabbo aggaṁ dhammaṁ arahattaṁ sacchikātuṁ. Katamehi chahi? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddho hoti, hirīmā hoti, ottappī hoti, āraddhavīriyo hoti, paññavā hoti, kāye ca jīvite ca anapekkho hoti. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, chahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu bhabbo aggaṁ dhammaṁ arahattaṁ sacchikātun”ti.

    A bhikkhu with six qualities can realize the best thing, perfection. What six? It’s when a bhikkhu is faithful, conscientious, prudent, energetic, and wise. And they have no concern for their body and their life. A bhikkhu with these six qualities can realize the best thing, perfection.”
