Dārukammikasutta

एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा नातिके विहरति गिञ्जकावसथे।
Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā nātike viharati giñjakāvasathe.
So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying at Ñātika in the brick house.
अथ खो दारुकम्मिको गहपति येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो दारुकम्मिकं गहपतिं भगवा एतदवोच: “अपि नु ते, गहपति, कुले दानं दीयती”ति?
Atha kho dārukammiko gahapati yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho dārukammikaṁ gahapatiṁ bhagavā etadavoca: “api nu te, gahapati, kule dānaṁ dīyatī”ti?
Then the householder Dārukammika went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him, “Householder, I wonder whether your family gives gifts?”
“दीयति मे, भन्ते, कुले दानं। तञ्च खो ये ते भिक्खू आरञ्ञिका पिण्डपातिका पंसुकूलिका अरहन्तो वा अरहत्तमग्गं वा समापन्ना, तथारूपेसु मे, भन्ते, भिक्खूसु दानं दीयती”ति।
“Dīyati me, bhante, kule dānaṁ. Tañca kho ye te bhikkhū āraññikā piṇḍapātikā paṁsukūlikā arahanto vā arahattamaggaṁ vā samāpannā, tathārūpesu me, bhante, bhikkhūsu dānaṁ dīyatī”ti.
“It does, sir. Gifts are given to those bhikkhus who are perfected or on the path to perfection; they live in the wilderness, eat only almsfood, and wear rag robes.”
“दुज्जानं खो एतं, गहपति, तया गिहिना कामभोगिना पुत्तसम्बाधसयनं अज्झावसन्तेन, कासिकचन्दनं पच्चनुभोन्तेन, मालागन्धविलेपनं धारयन्तेन, जातरूपरजतं सादियन्तेन इमे वा अरहन्तो इमे वा अरहत्तमग्गं समापन्नाति।
“Dujjānaṁ kho etaṁ, gahapati, tayā gihinā kāmabhoginā puttasambādhasayanaṁ ajjhāvasantena, kāsikacandanaṁ paccanubhontena, mālāgandhavilepanaṁ dhārayantena, jātarūparajataṁ sādiyantena ime vā arahanto ime vā arahattamaggaṁ samāpannāti.
“Householder, as a layman enjoying sensual pleasures, living at home with your children, using sandalwood imported from Kāsi, wearing garlands, fragrance, and makeup, and accepting gold and money, it’s hard for you to know who is perfected or on the path to perfection.
आरञ्ञिको चेपि, गहपति, भिक्खु होति उद्धतो उन्नळो चपलो मुखरो विकिण्णवाचो मुट्ठस्सति असम्पजानो असमाहितो विब्भन्तचित्तो पाकतिन्द्रियो। एवं सो तेनङ्गेन गारय्हो। आरञ्ञिको चेपि, गहपति, भिक्खु होति अनुद्धतो अनुन्नळो अचपलो अमुखरो अविकिण्णवाचो उपट्ठितस्सति सम्पजानो समाहितो एकग्गचित्तो संवुतिन्द्रियो। एवं सो तेनङ्गेन पासंसो।
Āraññiko cepi, gahapati, bhikkhu hoti uddhato unnaḷo capalo mukharo vikiṇṇavāco muṭṭhassati asampajāno asamāhito vibbhantacitto pākatindriyo. Evaṁ so tenaṅgena gārayho. Āraññiko cepi, gahapati, bhikkhu hoti anuddhato anunnaḷo acapalo amukharo avikiṇṇavāco upaṭṭhitassati sampajāno samāhito ekaggacitto saṁvutindriyo. Evaṁ so tenaṅgena pāsaṁso.
If a bhikkhu living in the wilderness is restless, insolent, fickle, scurrilous, loose-tongued, unmindful, lacking situational awareness and immersion, with straying mind and undisciplined faculties, then in this respect they’re reprehensible. If a bhikkhu living in the wilderness is not restless, insolent, fickle, scurrilous, or loose-tongued, but has established mindfulness, situational awareness and immersion, with unified mind and restrained faculties, then in this respect they’re praiseworthy.
गामन्तविहारी चेपि, गहपति, भिक्खु होति उद्धतो …पे… एवं सो तेनङ्गेन गारय्हो। गामन्तविहारी चेपि, गहपति, भिक्खु होति अनुद्धतो …पे… एवं सो तेनङ्गेन पासंसो।
Gāmantavihārī cepi, gahapati, bhikkhu hoti uddhato …pe… evaṁ so tenaṅgena gārayho. Gāmantavihārī cepi, gahapati, bhikkhu hoti anuddhato …pe… evaṁ so tenaṅgena pāsaṁso.
If a bhikkhu who lives within a village is restless … then in this respect they’re reprehensible. If a bhikkhu who lives within a village is not restless … then in this respect they’re praiseworthy.
पिण्डपातिको चेपि, गहपति, भिक्खु होति उद्धतो …पे… एवं सो तेनङ्गेन गारय्हो। पिण्डपातिको चेपि, गहपति, भिक्खु होति अनुद्धतो …पे… एवं सो तेनङ्गेन पासंसो।
Piṇḍapātiko cepi, gahapati, bhikkhu hoti uddhato …pe… evaṁ so tenaṅgena gārayho. Piṇḍapātiko cepi, gahapati, bhikkhu hoti anuddhato …pe… evaṁ so tenaṅgena pāsaṁso.
If a bhikkhu who eats only almsfood is restless … then in this respect they’re reprehensible. If a bhikkhu who eats only almsfood is not restless … then in this respect they’re praiseworthy.
नेमन्तनिको चेपि, गहपति, भिक्खु होति उद्धतो …पे… एवं सो तेनङ्गेन गारय्हो। नेमन्तनिको चेपि, गहपति, भिक्खु होति अनुद्धतो …पे… एवं सो तेनङ्गेन पासंसो।
Nemantaniko cepi, gahapati, bhikkhu hoti uddhato …pe… evaṁ so tenaṅgena gārayho. Nemantaniko cepi, gahapati, bhikkhu hoti anuddhato …pe… evaṁ so tenaṅgena pāsaṁso.
If a bhikkhu who accepts invitations is restless … then in this respect they’re reprehensible. If a bhikkhu who accepts invitations is not restless … then in this respect they’re praiseworthy.
पंसुकूलिको चेपि, गहपति, भिक्खु होति उद्धतो …पे… एवं सो तेनङ्गेन गारय्हो। पंसुकूलिको चेपि, गहपति, भिक्खु होति अनुद्धतो …पे… एवं सो तेनङ्गेन पासंसो।
Paṁsukūliko cepi, gahapati, bhikkhu hoti uddhato …pe… evaṁ so tenaṅgena gārayho. Paṁsukūliko cepi, gahapati, bhikkhu hoti anuddhato …pe… evaṁ so tenaṅgena pāsaṁso.
If a bhikkhu who wears rag robes is restless … then in this respect they’re reprehensible. If a bhikkhu who wears rag robes is not restless … then in this respect they’re praiseworthy.
गहपतिचीवरधरो चेपि, गहपति, भिक्खु होति उद्धतो उन्नळो चपलो मुखरो विकिण्णवाचो मुट्ठस्सति असम्पजानो असमाहितो विब्भन्तचित्तो पाकतिन्द्रियो। एवं सो तेनङ्गेन गारय्हो। गहपतिचीवरधरो चेपि, गहपति, भिक्खु होति अनुद्धतो अनुन्नळो अचपलो अमुखरो अविकिण्णवाचो उपट्ठितस्सति सम्पजानो समाहितो एकग्गचित्तो संवुतिन्द्रियो। एवं सो तेनङ्गेन पासंसो।
Gahapaticīvaradharo cepi, gahapati, bhikkhu hoti uddhato unnaḷo capalo mukharo vikiṇṇavāco muṭṭhassati asampajāno asamāhito vibbhantacitto pākatindriyo. Evaṁ so tenaṅgena gārayho. If a bhikkhu who wears robes offered by householders is restless, insolent, fickle, scurrilous, loose-tongued, unmindful, lacking situational awareness and immersion, with straying mind and undisciplined faculties, then in this respect they’re reprehensible. If a bhikkhu who wears robes offered by householders is not restless, insolent, fickle, scurrilous, or loose-tongued, but has established mindfulness, situational awareness and immersion, with unified mind and restrained faculties, then in this respect they’re praiseworthy.
इङ्घ त्वं, गहपति, सङ्घे दानं देहि। सङ्घे ते दानं ददतो चित्तं पसीदिस्सति। सो त्वं पसन्नचित्तो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा सुगतिं सग्गं लोकं उपपज्जिस्ससी”ति।
Iṅgha tvaṁ, gahapati, saṅghe dānaṁ1 dehi. Saṅghe te dānaṁ dadato cittaṁ pasīdissati. So tvaṁ pasannacitto kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjissasī”ti.
Go ahead, householder, give gifts to the Saṅgha. Your mind will become bright and clear, and when your body breaks up, after death, you’ll be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.”
“एसाहं, भन्ते, अज्जतग्गे सङ्घे दानं दस्सामी”ति।
“Esāhaṁ, bhante, ajjatagge saṅghe dānaṁ dassāmī”ti.
“Sir, from this day forth I will give gifts to the Saṅgha.”
पञ्चमं।
