Macchariyasutta
Stinginess
“पञ्चिमानि, भिक्खवे, मच्छरियानि। कतमानि पञ्च? आवासमच्छरियं, कुलमच्छरियं, लाभमच्छरियं, वण्णमच्छरियं, धम्ममच्छरियं—इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्च मच्छरियानि।
“Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, macchariyāni. Katamāni pañca? Āvāsamacchariyaṁ, kulamacchariyaṁ, lābhamacchariyaṁ, vaṇṇamacchariyaṁ, dhammamacchariyaṁ—imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañca macchariyāni.
“Bhikkhus, there are these five kinds of stinginess. What five? Stinginess with dwellings, families, material possessions, praise, and the teaching. These are the five kinds of stinginess.
इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चन्नं मच्छरियानं पहानाय …पे… इमे चत्तारो सतिपट्ठाना भावेतब्बा”ति।
Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcannaṁ macchariyānaṁ pahānāya …pe… ime cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvetabbā”ti.
To give up these five kinds of stinginess you should develop the four kinds of mindfulness meditation. …”
