    The Great Congregation

    एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा सक्केसु विहरति कपिलवत्थुस्मिं महावने महता भिक्खुसङ्घेन सद्धिं पञ्चमत्तेहि भिक्खुसतेहि सब्बेहेव अरहन्तेहि; दसहि च लोकधातूहि देवता येभुय्येन सन्निपतिता होन्ति भगवन्तं दस्सनाय भिक्खुसङ्घञ्च।

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiṁ mahāvane mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi sabbeheva arahantehi; dasahi ca lokadhātūhi devatā yebhuyyena sannipatitā honti bhagavantaṁ dassanāya bhikkhusaṅghañca.

    So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, in the Great Wood near Kapilavatthu, together with a large Saṅgha of five hundred bhikkhus, all of whom were perfected ones. And most of the deities from ten solar systems had gathered to see the Buddha and the Saṅgha of bhikkhus.

    अथ खो चतुन्नं सुद्धावासकायिकानं देवतानं एतदहोसि: “अयं खो भगवा सक्केसु विहरति कपिलवत्थुस्मिं महावने महता भिक्खुसङ्घेन सद्धिं पञ्चमत्तेहि भिक्खुसतेहि सब्बेहेव अरहन्तेहि; दसहि च लोकधातूहि देवता येभुय्येन सन्निपतिता होन्ति भगवन्तं दस्सनाय भिक्खुसङ्घञ्च। यन्नून मयम्पि येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमेय्याम; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवतो सन्तिके पच्चेकं गाथं भासेय्यामा”ति।

    Atha kho catunnaṁ suddhāvāsakāyikānaṁ devatānaṁ1 etadahosi: “ayaṁ kho bhagavā sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiṁ mahāvane mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi sabbeheva arahantehi; dasahi ca lokadhātūhi devatā yebhuyyena sannipatitā honti bhagavantaṁ dassanāya bhikkhusaṅghañca. Yannūna mayampi yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkameyyāma; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavato santike paccekaṁ gāthaṁ2 bhāseyyāmā”ti.

    Then four deities of the Pure Abodes, aware of what was happening, thought: “Why don’t we go to the Buddha and each recite a verse in his presence?”

    अथ खो ता देवता सेय्यथापि नाम बलवा पुरिसो समिञ्जितं वा बाहं पसारेय्य पसारितं वा बाहं समिञ्जेय्य; एवमेव—सुद्धावासेसु देवेसु अन्तरहिता भगवतो पुरतो पातुरहेसुं। अथ खो ता देवता भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं अट्ठंसु। एकमन्तं ठिता खो एका देवता भगवतो सन्तिके इमं गाथं अभासि:

    Atha kho tā devatā seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiñjitaṁ vā bāhaṁ pasāreyya pasāritaṁ vā bāhaṁ samiñjeyya; evameva—suddhāvāsesu devesu antarahitā bhagavato purato pāturahesuṁ. Atha kho tā devatā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu. Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho ekā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

    Then, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, they vanished from the Pure Abodes and reappeared in front of the Buddha. They bowed to the Buddha and stood to one side. Standing to one side, one deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

    “महासमयो पवनस्मिं, देवकाया समागता; आगतम्ह इमं धम्मसमयं, दक्खिताये अपराजितसङ्घन्”ति।

    “Mahāsamayo pavanasmiṁ, Devakāyā samāgatā; Āgatamha imaṁ dhammasamayaṁ, Dakkhitāye aparājitasaṅghan”ti.

    “There’s a great congregation in the woods, where heavenly hosts have assembled. We’ve come to this righteous congregation to see the invincible Saṅgha!”

    अथ खो अपरा देवता भगवतो सन्तिके इमं गाथं अभासि:

    Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

    Then another deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

    “तत्र भिक्खवो समादहंसु, चित्तमत्तनो उजुकं अकंसु; सारथीव नेत्तानि गहेत्वा, इन्द्रियानि रक्खन्ति पण्डिता”ति।

    “Tatra bhikkhavo samādahaṁsu, Cittamattano ujukaṁ akaṁsu; Sārathīva nettāni gahetvā, Indriyāni rakkhanti paṇḍitā”ti.

    “The bhikkhus there are immersed in samādhi, they’ve straightened their own minds. Like a charioteer holding the reins, the astute ones protect their senses.”

    अथ खो अपरा देवता भगवतो सन्तिके इमं गाथं अभासि:

    Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

    Then another deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

    “छेत्वा खीलं छेत्वा पलिघं, इन्दखीलं ऊहच्च मनेजा; ते चरन्ति सुद्धा विमला, चक्खुमता सुदन्ता सुसुनागा”ति।

    “Chetvā khīlaṁ chetvā palighaṁ, Indakhīlaṁ ūhacca manejā; Te caranti suddhā vimalā, Cakkhumatā sudantā susunāgā”ti.

    “They snapped the post and snapped the bar, unstirred, they tore out the boundary post. They live pure and immaculate, the young giants tamed by the Clear-eyed One.”

    अथ खो अपरा देवता भगवतो सन्तिके इमं गाथं अभासि:

    Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

    Then another deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

    “ये केचि बुद्धं सरणं गतासे, न ते गमिस्सन्ति अपायभूमिं; पहाय मानुसं देहं, देवकायं परिपूरेस्सन्ती”ति।

    “Ye keci buddhaṁ saraṇaṁ gatāse, Na te gamissanti apāyabhūmiṁ; Pahāya mānusaṁ dehaṁ, Devakāyaṁ paripūressantī”ti.

    “Anyone who has gone to the Buddha for refuge won’t go to a plane of loss. After giving up this human body, they swell the hosts of gods.”

    1. The Gathering of Deities

    अथ खो भगवा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि:

    Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:

    Then the Buddha said to the bhikkhus:

    “येभुय्येन, भिक्खवे, दससु लोकधातूसु देवता सन्निपतिता होन्ति, तथागतं दस्सनाय भिक्खुसङ्घञ्च। येपि ते, भिक्खवे, अहेसुं अतीतमद्धानं अरहन्तो सम्मासम्बुद्धा, तेसम्पि भगवन्तानं एतप्परमायेव देवता सन्निपतिता अहेसुं सेय्यथापि मय्हं एतरहि। येपि ते, भिक्खवे, भविस्सन्ति अनागतमद्धानं अरहन्तो सम्मासम्बुद्धा, तेसम्पि भगवन्तानं एतप्परमायेव देवता सन्निपतिता भविस्सन्ति सेय्यथापि मय्हं एतरहि। आचिक्खिस्सामि, भिक्खवे, देवकायानं नामानि; कित्तयिस्सामि, भिक्खवे, देवकायानं नामानि; देसेस्सामि, भिक्खवे, देवकायानं नामानि। तं सुणाथ, साधुकं मनसिकरोथ, भासिस्सामी”ति।

    “yebhuyyena, bhikkhave, dasasu lokadhātūsu devatā sannipatitā honti, tathāgataṁ dassanāya bhikkhusaṅghañca. Yepi te, bhikkhave, ahesuṁ atītamaddhānaṁ arahanto sammāsambuddhā, tesampi bhagavantānaṁ etapparamāyeva3 devatā sannipatitā ahesuṁ seyyathāpi mayhaṁ etarahi. Yepi te, bhikkhave, bhavissanti anāgatamaddhānaṁ arahanto sammāsambuddhā, tesampi bhagavantānaṁ etapparamāyeva devatā sannipatitā bhavissanti seyyathāpi mayhaṁ etarahi. Ācikkhissāmi, bhikkhave, devakāyānaṁ nāmāni; kittayissāmi, bhikkhave, devakāyānaṁ nāmāni; desessāmi, bhikkhave, devakāyānaṁ nāmāni. Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasikarotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.

    “Bhikkhus, most of the deities from ten solar systems have gathered to see the Realized One and the bhikkhu Saṅgha. The Buddhas of the past had, and the Buddhas of the future will have, gatherings of deities that are at most like the gathering for me now. I shall declare the names of the heavenly hosts; I shall extol the names of the heavenly hosts; I shall teach the names of the heavenly hosts. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”

    “एवं, भन्ते”ति खो ते भिक्खू भगवतो पच्चस्सोसुं।

    “Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.

    “Yes, sir,” they replied.

    भगवा एतदवोच:

    Bhagavā etadavoca:

    The Buddha said this:

    “सिलोकमनुकस्सामि, यत्थ भुम्मा तदस्सिता; ये सिता गिरिगब्भरं, पहितत्ता समाहिता।

    “Silokamanukassāmi, yattha bhummā tadassitā; Ye sitā girigabbharaṁ, pahitattā samāhitā.

    “I invoke a paean of praise! Where the earth-gods dwell, there, in mountain caves, resolute and composed,

    पुथूसीहाव सल्लीना, लोमहंसाभिसम्भुनो; ओदातमनसा सुद्धा, विप्पसन्नमनाविला।

    Puthūsīhāva sallīnā, lomahaṁsābhisambhuno; Odātamanasā suddhā, vippasannamanāvilā.

    dwell many like lonely lions, who have mastered their fears. Their minds are bright and pure, clear and undisturbed.”

    भिय्यो पञ्चसते ञत्वा, वने कापिलवत्थवे; ततो आमन्तयी सत्था, सावके सासने रते।

    Bhiyyo pañcasate ñatvā, vane kāpilavatthave; Tato āmantayī satthā, sāvake sāsane rate.

    The teacher knew that over five hundred were in the wood at Kapilavatthu. Therefore he addressed the disciples who love the teaching:

    ‘देवकाया अभिक्कन्ता, ते विजानाथ भिक्खवोऽ; ते च आतप्पमकरुं, सुत्वा बुद्धस्स सासनं।

    ‘Devakāyā abhikkantā, te vijānātha bhikkhavo’; Te ca ātappamakaruṁ, sutvā buddhassa sāsanaṁ.

    “The heavenly hosts have come forth; bhikkhus, you should be aware of them.” Those monks grew keen, hearing the Buddha’s instruction.

    तेसं पातुरहु ञाणं, अमनुस्सानदस्सनं; अप्पेके सतमद्दक्खुं, सहस्सं अथ सत्तरिं।

    Tesaṁ pāturahu ñāṇaṁ, amanussānadassanaṁ; Appeke satamaddakkhuṁ, sahassaṁ atha sattariṁ.

    Knowledge manifested in them, seeing those non-human beings. Some saw a hundred, a thousand, even seventy thousand,

    सतं एके सहस्सानं, अमनुस्सानमद्दसुं; अप्पेकेनन्तमद्दक्खुं, दिसा सब्बा फुटा अहुं।

    Sataṁ eke sahassānaṁ, amanussānamaddasuṁ; Appekenantamaddakkhuṁ, disā sabbā phuṭā ahuṁ.

    while some saw a hundred thousand non-human beings. But some saw an endless number spread out in every direction.

    तञ्च सब्बं अभिञ्ञाय, ववत्थित्वान चक्खुमा; ततो आमन्तयी सत्था, सावके सासने रते।

    Tañca sabbaṁ abhiññāya, vavatthitvāna4 cakkhumā; Tato āmantayī satthā, sāvake sāsane rate.

    And all that was known and distinguished by the Clear-eyed One. Therefore he addressed the disciples who love the teaching:

    ‘देवकाया अभिक्कन्ता, ते विजानाथ भिक्खवो; ये वोहं कित्तयिस्सामि, गिराहि अनुपुब्बसोऽ।

    ‘Devakāyā abhikkantā, te vijānātha bhikkhavo; Ye vohaṁ kittayissāmi, girāhi anupubbaso’.

    “The heavenly hosts have come forth; bhikkhus, you should be aware of them. I shall extol them for you, with lyrics in proper order.

    सत्तसहस्सा ते यक्खा, भुम्मा कापिलवत्थवा; इद्धिमन्तो जुतिमन्तो, वण्णवन्तो यसस्सिनो; मोदमाना अभिक्कामुं, भिक्खूनं समितिं वनं।

    Sattasahassā te yakkhā, bhummā kāpilavatthavā; Iddhimanto jutimanto, vaṇṇavanto yasassino; Modamānā abhikkāmuṁ, bhikkhūnaṁ samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    There are seven thousand spirits, earth-gods of Kapilavatthu. They’re powerful and brilliant, so beautiful and glorious. Rejoicing, they’ve come forth to the meeting of bhikkhus in the wood.

    छसहस्सा हेमवता, यक्खा नानत्तवण्णिनो; इद्धिमन्तो जुतिमन्तो, वण्णवन्तो यसस्सिनो; मोदमाना अभिक्कामुं, भिक्खूनं समितिं वनं।

    Chasahassā hemavatā, yakkhā nānattavaṇṇino; Iddhimanto jutimanto, vaṇṇavanto yasassino; Modamānā abhikkāmuṁ, bhikkhūnaṁ samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    From the Himalayas there are six thousand spirits of different colors. They’re powerful and brilliant, so beautiful and glorious. Rejoicing, they’ve come forth to the meeting of bhikkhus in the wood.

    सातागिरा तिसहस्सा, यक्खा नानत्तवण्णिनो; इद्धिमन्तो जुतिमन्तो, वण्णवन्तो यसस्सिनो; मोदमाना अभिक्कामुं, भिक्खूनं समितिं वनं।

    Sātāgirā tisahassā, yakkhā nānattavaṇṇino; Iddhimanto jutimanto, vaṇṇavanto yasassino; Modamānā abhikkāmuṁ, bhikkhūnaṁ samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    From Mount Sātā there are three thousand spirits of different colors. They’re powerful and brilliant, so beautiful and glorious. Rejoicing, they’ve come forth to the meeting of bhikkhus in the wood.

    इच्चेते सोळससहस्सा, यक्खा नानत्तवण्णिनो; इद्धिमन्तो जुतिमन्तो, वण्णवन्तो यसस्सिनो; मोदमाना अभिक्कामुं, भिक्खूनं समितिं वनं।

    Iccete soḷasasahassā, yakkhā nānattavaṇṇino; Iddhimanto jutimanto, vaṇṇavanto yasassino; Modamānā abhikkāmuṁ, bhikkhūnaṁ samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    And thus there are sixteen thousand spirits of different colors. They’re powerful and brilliant, so beautiful and glorious. Rejoicing, they’ve come forth to the meeting of bhikkhus in the wood.

    वेस्सामित्ता पञ्चसता, यक्खा नानत्तवण्णिनो; इद्धिमन्तो जुतिमन्तो, वण्णवन्तो यसस्सिनो; मोदमाना अभिक्कामुं, भिक्खूनं समितिं वनं।

    Vessāmittā pañcasatā, yakkhā nānattavaṇṇino; Iddhimanto jutimanto, vaṇṇavanto yasassino; Modamānā abhikkāmuṁ, bhikkhūnaṁ samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    From Vessāmitta’s mountain there are five hundred spirits of different colors. They’re powerful and brilliant, so beautiful and glorious. Rejoicing, they’ve come forth to the meeting of bhikkhus in the wood.

    कुम्भीरो राजगहिको, वेपुल्लस्स निवेसनं; भिय्यो नं सतसहस्सं, यक्खानं पयिरुपासति; कुम्भीरो राजगहिको, सोपागा समितिं वनं।

    Kumbhīro rājagahiko, vepullassa nivesanaṁ; Bhiyyo naṁ satasahassaṁ, yakkhānaṁ payirupāsati; Kumbhīro rājagahiko, sopāgā samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    And there’s Kumbhīra of Rājagaha, whose home is on Mount Vepulla. Attended by more than a hundred thousand spirits, Kumbhīra of Rājagaha also came to the meeting in the wood.

    पुरिमञ्च दिसं राजा, धतरट्ठो पसासति; गन्धब्बानं अधिपति, महाराजा यसस्सिसो।

    Purimañca disaṁ rājā, dhataraṭṭho pasāsati; Gandhabbānaṁ adhipati, mahārājā yasassiso.

    King Dhataraṭṭha rules the eastern quarter. Lord of the centaurs, he’s a great king, glorious.

    पुत्तापि तस्स बहवो, इन्दनामा महब्बला; इद्धिमन्तो जुतिमन्तो, वण्णवन्तो यसस्सिनो; मोदमाना अभिक्कामुं, भिक्खूनं समितिं वनं।

    Puttāpi tassa bahavo, indanāmā mahabbalā; Iddhimanto jutimanto, vaṇṇavanto yasassino; Modamānā abhikkāmuṁ, bhikkhūnaṁ samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    And he has many mighty sons all of them named Indra. They’re powerful and brilliant, so beautiful and glorious. Rejoicing, they’ve come forth to the meeting of bhikkhus in the wood.

    दक्खिणञ्च दिसं राजा, विरूळ्हो तं पसासति; कुम्भण्डानं अधिपति, महाराजा यसस्सिसो।

    Dakkhiṇañca disaṁ rājā, virūḷho taṁ pasāsati; Kumbhaṇḍānaṁ adhipati, mahārājā yasassiso.

    King Virūḷhaka rules the southern quarter. Lord of the goblins, he’s a great king, glorious.

    पुत्तापि तस्स बहवो, इन्दनामा महब्बला; इद्धिमन्तो जुतिमन्तो, वण्णवन्तो यसस्सिनो; मोदमाना अभिक्कामुं, भिक्खूनं समितिं वनं।

    Puttāpi tassa bahavo, indanāmā mahabbalā; Iddhimanto jutimanto, vaṇṇavanto yasassino; Modamānā abhikkāmuṁ, bhikkhūnaṁ samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    And he has many mighty sons all of them named Indra. They’re powerful and brilliant, so beautiful and glorious. Rejoicing, they’ve come forth to the meeting of bhikkhus in the wood.

    पच्छिमञ्च दिसं राजा, विरूपक्खो पसासति; नागानञ्च अधिपति, महाराजा यसस्सिसो।

    Pacchimañca disaṁ rājā, virūpakkho pasāsati; Nāgānañca adhipati, mahārājā yasassiso.

    King Virūpakkha rules the western quarter. Lord of the dragons, he’s a great king, glorious.

    पुत्तापि तस्स बहवो, इन्दनामा महब्बला; इद्धिमन्तो जुतिमन्तो, वण्णवन्तो यसस्सिनो; मोदमाना अभिक्कामुं, भिक्खूनं समितिं वनं।

    उत्तरञ्च दिसं राजा, कुवेरो तं पसासति; यक्खानञ्च अधिपति, महाराजा यसस्सिसो।

    Uttarañca disaṁ rājā, kuvero taṁ pasāsati; Yakkhānañca adhipati, mahārājā yasassiso.

    King Kuvera rules the northern quarter. Lord of spirits, he’s a great king, glorious.

    पुत्तापि तस्स बहवो, इन्दनामा महब्बला; इद्धिमन्तो जुतिमन्तो, वण्णवन्तो यसस्सिनो; मोदमाना अभिक्कामुं, भिक्खूनं समितिं वनं।

    Puttāpi tassa bahavo, indanāmā mahabbalā; Iddhimanto jutimanto, vaṇṇavanto yasassino; Modamānā abhikkāmuṁ, bhikkhūnaṁ samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    पुरिमं दिसं धतरट्ठो, दक्खिणेन विरूळ्हको; पच्छिमेन विरूपक्खो, कुवेरो उत्तरं दिसं।

    Purimaṁ disaṁ dhataraṭṭho, dakkhiṇena virūḷhako; Pacchimena virūpakkho, kuvero uttaraṁ disaṁ.

    Dhataraṭṭha in the east, Virūḷhaka to the south, Virūpakkha to the west, and Kuvera in the north.

    चत्तारो ते महाराजा, समन्ता चतुरो दिसा; दद्दल्लमाना अट्ठंसु, वने कापिलवत्थवे।

    Cattāro te mahārājā, samantā caturo disā; Daddallamānā5 aṭṭhaṁsu, vane kāpilavatthave.

    These Four Great Kings, all around in the four quarters, stood there dazzling in the wood at Kapilavatthu.

    तेसं मायाविनो दासा, आगुं वञ्चनिका सठा; माया कुटेण्डु विटेण्डु, विटुच्च विटुटो सह।

    Tesaṁ māyāvino dāsā, āguṁ vañcanikā saṭhā; Māyā kuṭeṇḍu viṭeṇḍu, viṭucca6 viṭuṭo saha.

    Their deceitful bondservants came, so treacherous and crafty—the deceivers Kuṭeṇḍu, Viṭeṇḍu, with Viṭucca and Viṭuḍa.

    चन्दनो कामसेट्ठो च, किन्निघण्डु निघण्डु च; पनादो ओपमञ्ञो च, देवसूतो च मातलि।

    Candano kāmaseṭṭho ca, kinnighaṇḍu7 nighaṇḍu ca; Panādo opamañño ca, devasūto ca mātali.

    And Candana and Kāmaseṭṭha, Kinnughaṇḍu and Nighaṇḍu, Panāda and Opamañña, and Mātali, the god’s charioteer.

    चित्तसेनो च गन्धब्बो, नळोराजा जनेसभो; आगा पञ्चसिखो चेव, तिम्बरू सूरियवच्छसा।

    Cittaseno ca gandhabbo, naḷorājā janesabho; Āgā pañcasikho ceva, timbarū sūriyavacchasā.

    Cittasena the centaur came too, and the kings Nala and Janesabha. Pañcasikha came too, with Timbaru and Suriyavaccasā.

    एते चञ्ञे च राजानो, गन्धब्बा सह राजुभि; मोदमाना अभिक्कामुं, भिक्खूनं समितिं वनं।

    Ete caññe ca rājāno, gandhabbā saha rājubhi; Modamānā abhikkāmuṁ, bhikkhūnaṁ samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    These and other kings there were, the centaurs with their kings. Rejoicing, they’ve come forth to the meeting of bhikkhus in the wood.

    अथागुं नागसा नागा, वेसाला सहतच्छका; कम्बलस्सतरा आगुं, पायागा सह ञातिभि।

    Athāguṁ nāgasā nāgā, vesālā sahatacchakā; Kambalassatarā āguṁ, pāyāgā saha ñātibhi.

    Then came the dragons of Nābhasa lake, and those from Vesālī with those from Takkasilā. The Kambalas and Assataras came and those from Payāga with their kin.

    यामुना धतरट्ठा च, आगू नागा यसस्सिनो; एरावणो महानागो, सोपागा समितिं वनं।

    Yāmunā dhataraṭṭhā ca, āgū nāgā yasassino; Erāvaṇo mahānāgo, sopāgā samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    Those from Yamunā, and the Dhataraṭṭha dragons came, so glorious. And Erāvaṇa the great dragon also came to the meeting in the wood.

    ये नागराजे सहसा हरन्ति, दिब्बा दिजा पक्खि विसुद्धचक्खू; वेहायसा ते वनमज्झपत्ता, चित्रा सुपण्णा इति तेस नामं।

    Ye nāgarāje sahasā haranti, Dibbā dijā pakkhi visuddhacakkhū; Vehāyasā8 te vanamajjhapattā, Citrā supaṇṇā iti tesa nāmaṁ.

    Those who seize the dragon kings by force—divine, twice-born birds with piercing vision—swoop down to the wood from the sky; their name is ‘Rainbow Phoenix’.

    अभयं तदा नागराजानमासि, सुपण्णतो खेममकासि बुद्धो; सण्हाहि वाचाहि उपव्हयन्ता, नागा सुपण्णा सरणमकंसु बुद्धं।

    Abhayaṁ tadā nāgarājānamāsi, Supaṇṇato khemamakāsi buddho; Saṇhāhi vācāhi upavhayantā, Nāgā supaṇṇā saraṇamakaṁsu buddhaṁ.

    But the dragon kings remained fearless, for the Buddha kept them safe from the phoenixes. Introducing each other with gentle words, the dragons and phoenixes took the Buddha as refuge.

    जिता वजिरहत्थेन, समुद्दं असुरासिता; भातरो वासवस्सेते, इद्धिमन्तो यसस्सिनो।

    Jitā vajirahatthena, samuddaṁ asurāsitā; Bhātaro vāsavassete, iddhimanto yasassino.

    Defeated by Vajirahattha, the demons live in the ocean. They’re brothers of Vāsava, powerful and glorious.

    कालकञ्चा महाभिस्मा, असुरा दानवेघसा; वेपचित्ति सुचित्ति च, पहारादो नमुची सह।

    Kālakañcā mahābhismā, asurā dānaveghasā; Vepacitti sucitti ca, pahārādo namucī saha.

    There’s the terrifying Kālakañjas, the Dānava and Ghasa demons, Vepacitti and Sucitti, Pahārāda with Namuci,

    सतञ्च बलिपुत्तानं, सब्बे वेरोचनामका; सन्नय्हित्वा बलिसेनं, राहुभद्दमुपागमुं; ‘समयो दानि भद्दन्ते, भिक्खूनं समितिं वनंऽ।

    Satañca baliputtānaṁ, sabbe verocanāmakā; Sannayhitvā balisenaṁ, rāhubhaddamupāgamuṁ; ‘Samayo dāni bhaddante, bhikkhūnaṁ samitiṁ vanaṁ’.

    and Bali’s hundred sons, all named after Virocana. Bali’s army armed themselves and went to the auspicious Rāhu, saying: ‘Now is the time, sir, for the meeting of bhikkhus in the wood.’

    आपो च देवा पथवी, तेजो वायो तदागमुं; वरुणा वारणा देवा, सोमो च यससा सह।

    Āpo ca devā pathavī, tejo vāyo tadāgamuṁ; Varuṇā vāraṇā9 devā, somo ca yasasā saha.

    The gods of Water and Earth, and Fire and Wind came there. The gods of Varuṇa and Varuṇa’s offsping, and Soma together with Yasa.

    मेत्ता करुणा कायिका, आगुं देवा यसस्सिनो; दसेते दसधा काया, सब्बे नानत्तवण्णिनो।

    Mettā karuṇā kāyikā, āguṁ devā yasassino; Dasete dasadhā kāyā, sabbe nānattavaṇṇino.

    A host of the gods of Love and Compassion came, so glorious. These ten hosts of gods shone in all different colors.

    इद्धिमन्तो जुतिमन्तो, वण्णवन्तो यसस्सिनो; मोदमाना अभिक्कामुं, भिक्खूनं समितिं वनं।

    Iddhimanto jutimanto, vaṇṇavanto yasassino; Modamānā abhikkāmuṁ, bhikkhūnaṁ samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    They’re powerful and brilliant, so beautiful and glorious. Rejoicing, they’ve come forth to the meeting of bhikkhus in the wood.

    वेण्डुदेवा सहलि च, असमा च दुवे यमा; चन्दस्सूपनिसा देवा, चन्दमागुं पुरक्खत्वा।

    Veṇḍudevā sahali ca, asamā ca duve yamā; Candassūpanisā devā, candamāguṁ purakkhatvā.

    The Vishnu and Sahalī gods, and the unequaled pair of Twins. The gods living on the moon came, with the Moon before them.

    सूरियस्सूपनिसा देवा, सूरियमागुं पुरक्खत्वा; नक्खत्तानि पुरक्खत्वा, आगुं मन्दवलाहका।

    Sūriyassūpanisā devā, sūriyamāguṁ purakkhatvā; Nakkhattāni purakkhatvā, āguṁ mandavalāhakā.

    The gods living on the sun came, with the Sun before them. And with the stars before them came the languid gods of clouds.

    वसूनं वासवो सेट्ठो, सक्कोपागा पुरिन्ददो; दसेते दसधा काया, सब्बे नानत्तवण्णिनो।

    Vasūnaṁ vāsavo seṭṭho, sakkopāgā purindado; Dasete dasadhā kāyā, sabbe nānattavaṇṇino.

    And Vāsava came, the greatest of the Vasus, who is Sakka, known as Purindada. These ten hosts of gods shone in all different colors.

    इद्धिमन्तो जुतिमन्तो, वण्णवन्तो यसस्सिनो; मोदमाना अभिक्कामुं, भिक्खूनं समितिं वनं।

    Iddhimanto jutimanto, vaṇṇavanto yasassino; Modamānā abhikkāmuṁ, bhikkhūnaṁ samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    They’re powerful and brilliant, so beautiful and glorious. Rejoicing, they’ve come forth to the meeting of bhikkhus in the wood.

    अथागुं सहभू देवा, जलमग्गि सिखारिव; अरिट्ठका च रोजा च, उमापुप्फनिभासिनो।

    Athāguṁ sahabhū devā, jalamaggi sikhāriva; Ariṭṭhakā ca rojā ca, umāpupphanibhāsino.

    Then came the Sahabhū gods, blazing like a crested flame; and the Ariṭṭhakas and Rojas too, and the gods hued blue as flax.

    वरुणा सहधम्मा च, अच्चुता च अनेजका; सूलेय्यरुचिरा आगुं, आगुं वासवनेसिनो; दसेते दसधा काया, सब्बे नानत्तवण्णिनो।

    Varuṇā sahadhammā ca, accutā ca anejakā; Sūleyyarucirā āguṁ, āguṁ vāsavanesino; Dasete dasadhā kāyā, sabbe nānattavaṇṇino.

    The Varuṇas and Sahadhammas, the Accutas and Anejakas, the Sūleyyas and Ruciras all came, as did the Vāsavanesi gods. These ten hosts of gods shone in all different colors.

    इद्धिमन्तो जुतिमन्तो, वण्णवन्तो यसस्सिनो; मोदमाना अभिक्कामुं, भिक्खूनं समितिं वनं।

    Iddhimanto jutimanto, vaṇṇavanto yasassino; Modamānā abhikkāmuṁ, bhikkhūnaṁ samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    They’re powerful and brilliant, so beautiful and glorious. Rejoicing, they’ve come forth to the meeting of bhikkhus in the wood.

    समाना महासमना, मानुसा मानुसुत्तमा; खिड्डापदोसिका आगुं, आगुं मनोपदोसिका।

    Samānā mahāsamanā, mānusā mānusuttamā; Khiḍḍāpadosikā āguṁ, āguṁ manopadosikā.

    The Samānas, Mahāsamānas, Mānusas, and Mānusuttamas all came, and the gods depraved by play, and those who are malevolent.

    अथागुं हरयो देवा, ये च लोहितवासिनो; पारगा महापारगा, आगुं देवा यसस्सिनो; दसेते दसधा काया, सब्बे नानत्तवण्णिनो।

    Athāguṁ harayo devā, ye ca lohitavāsino; Pāragā mahāpāragā, āguṁ devā yasassino; Dasete dasadhā kāyā, sabbe nānattavaṇṇino.

    Then came the gods of Mercury, and the those who live on Mars. The Pāragas and Mahāpāragas came, such glorious gods. These ten hosts of gods shone in all different colors.

    इद्धिमन्तो जुतिमन्तो, वण्णवन्तो यसस्सिनो; मोदमाना अभिक्कामुं, भिक्खूनं समितिं वनं।

    Iddhimanto jutimanto, vaṇṇavanto yasassino; Modamānā abhikkāmuṁ, bhikkhūnaṁ samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    They’re powerful and brilliant, so beautiful and glorious. Rejoicing, they’ve come forth to the meeting of bhikkhus in the wood.

    सुक्का करम्भा अरुणा, आगुं वेघनसा सह; ओदातगय्हा पामोक्खा, आगुं देवा विचक्खणा।

    Sukkā karambhā10 aruṇā, āguṁ veghanasā saha; Odātagayhā pāmokkhā, āguṁ devā vicakkhaṇā.

    The gods of Venus, the newborn sun, and the Dawn came along with those from Saturn. And the gods of the White Globe came leading the Brilliant Gods.

    सदामत्ता हारगजा, मिस्सका च यसस्सिनो; थनयं आग पज्जुन्नो, यो दिसा अभिवस्सति।

    Sadāmattā hāragajā, missakā ca yasassino; Thanayaṁ āga pajjunno, yo disā abhivassati.

    The Sadāmattas and Hāragajas, and assorted glorious ones; Pajjuna came thundering, he who rains on all quarters.

    दसेते दसधा काया, सब्बे नानत्तवण्णिनो; इद्धिमन्तो जुतिमन्तो, वण्णवन्तो यसस्सिनो; मोदमाना अभिक्कामुं, भिक्खूनं समितिं वनं।

    Dasete dasadhā kāyā, sabbe nānattavaṇṇino; Iddhimanto jutimanto, vaṇṇavanto yasassino; Modamānā abhikkāmuṁ, bhikkhūnaṁ samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    These ten hosts of gods shone in all different colors. They’re powerful and brilliant, so beautiful and glorious. Rejoicing, they’ve come forth to the meeting of bhikkhus in the wood.

    खेमिया तुसिता यामा, कट्ठका च यसस्सिनो; लम्बीतका लामसेट्ठा, जोतिनामा च आसवा; निम्मानरतिनो आगुं, अथागुं परनिम्मिता।

    Khemiyā tusitā yāmā, kaṭṭhakā ca yasassino; Lambītakā lāmaseṭṭhā, jotināmā ca āsavā; Nimmānaratino āguṁ, athāguṁ paranimmitā.

    The Khemiyas from the realms of Tusita and Yama, and the glorious Kaṭṭhakas came; the Lambītakas, Lāmaseṭṭhas, those called the Shining, and the gods of Granted Wishes. The Gods Who Love to Create came too, and those who delight in the Creations of Others.

    दसेते दसधा काया, सब्बे नानत्तवण्णिनो; इद्धिमन्तो जुतिमन्तो, वण्णवन्तो यसस्सिनो; मोदमाना अभिक्कामुं, भिक्खूनं समितिं वनं।

    Dasete dasadhā kāyā, sabbe nānattavaṇṇino; Iddhimanto jutimanto, vaṇṇavanto yasassino; Modamānā abhikkāmuṁ, bhikkhūnaṁ samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    These ten hosts of gods shone in all different colors. They’re powerful and brilliant, so beautiful and glorious. Rejoicing, they’ve come forth to the meeting of bhikkhus in the wood.

    सट्ठेते देवनिकाया, सब्बे नानत्तवण्णिनो; नामन्वयेन आगच्छुं, ये चञ्ञे सदिसा सह।

    Saṭṭhete devanikāyā, sabbe nānattavaṇṇino; Nāmanvayena āgacchuṁ, ye caññe sadisā saha.

    These sixty hosts of gods shone in all different colors. They came organized by name, these and others likewise, thinking:

    ‘पवुट्ठजातिमखिलं, ओघतिण्णमनासवं; दक्खेमोघतरं नागं, चन्दंव असितातिगंऽ।

    ‘Pavuṭṭhajātimakhilaṁ, oghatiṇṇamanāsavaṁ; Dakkhemoghataraṁ nāgaṁ, candaṁva asitātigaṁ’.

    ‘We shall see those rid of rebirth, kind, the undefiled ones who have crossed the flood, and the dragon who brought them across, who like the Moon has overcome darkness.’

    सुब्रह्मा परमत्तो च, पुत्ता इद्धिमतो सह; सनङ्कुमारो तिस्सो च, सोपाग समितिं वनं।

    Subrahmā paramatto ca, puttā iddhimato saha; Sanaṅkumāro tisso ca, sopāga samitiṁ vanaṁ.

    Subrahmā and Paramatta came, with sons of those powerful ones. Sanaṅkumāra and Tissa also came to the meeting in the wood.

    सहस्सं ब्रह्मलोकानं, महाब्रह्माभितिट्ठति; उपपन्नो जुतिमन्तो, भिस्माकायो यसस्सिसो।

    Sahassaṁ brahmalokānaṁ, mahābrahmābhitiṭṭhati; Upapanno jutimanto, bhismākāyo yasassiso.

    Of a thousand Brahmā realms, the Great Brahmā stands forth. He has arisen, resplendent, his formidable body so glorious.

    दसेत्थ इस्सरा आगुं, पच्चेकवसवत्तिनो; तेसञ्च मज्झतो आग, हारितो परिवारितो।

    Dasettha issarā āguṁ, paccekavasavattino; Tesañca majjhato āga, hārito parivārito.

    Ten Gods Almighty came there, each one of them wielding power, and in the middle of them came Hārita with his following.”

    ते च सब्बे अभिक्कन्ते, सैन्दे देवे सब्रह्मके; मारसेना अभिक्कामि, पस्स कण्हस्स मन्दियं।

    Te ca sabbe abhikkante, sainde11 deve sabrahmake; Mārasenā abhikkāmi, passa kaṇhassa mandiyaṁ.

    When they had all come forth—the gods with their Lord, and the Brahmās—Māra’s army came forth too: see the stupidity of the Dark Lord!

    ‘एथ गण्हथ बन्धथ, रागेन बद्धमत्थु वो; समन्ता परिवारेथ, मा वो मुञ्चित्थ कोचि नंऽ।

    ‘Etha gaṇhatha bandhatha, rāgena baddhamatthu vo; Samantā parivāretha, mā vo muñcittha koci naṁ’.

    “Come, seize them and bind them,” he said, “let them be bound by desire! Surround them on all sides, don’t let any escape!”

    इति तत्थ महासेनो, कण्हो सेनं अपेसयि; पाणिना तलमाहच्च, सरं कत्वान भेरवं।

    Iti tattha mahāseno, kaṇho senaṁ apesayi; Pāṇinā talamāhacca, saraṁ katvāna bheravaṁ.

    And so there the great general sent forth his dark army. He struck the ground with his fist to make a horrifying sound

    यथा पावुस्सको मेघो, थनयन्तो सविज्जुको; तदा सो पच्चुदावत्ति, सङ्कुद्धो असयंवसे।

    Yathā pāvussako megho, thanayanto savijjuko; Tadā so paccudāvatti, saṅkuddho asayaṁvase.

    like a storm cloud shedding rain, thundering and flashing. But then he retreated, furious, out of control.

    तञ्च सब्बं अभिञ्ञाय, ववत्थित्वान चक्खुमा; ततो आमन्तयी सत्था, सावके सासने रते।

    Tañca sabbaṁ abhiññāya, vavatthitvāna cakkhumā; Tato āmantayī satthā, sāvake sāsane rate.

    And all that was known and distinguished by the Clear-eyed One. Thereupon the Teacher addressed the disciples who love the teaching:

    ‘मारसेना अभिक्कन्ता, ते विजानाथ भिक्खवोऽ; ते च आतप्पमकरुं, सुत्वा बुद्धस्स सासनं; वीतरागेहि पक्कामुं, नेसं लोमापि इञ्जयुं।

    ‘Mārasenā abhikkantā, te vijānātha bhikkhavo’; Te ca ātappamakaruṁ, sutvā buddhassa sāsanaṁ; Vītarāgehi pakkāmuṁ, nesaṁ lomāpi iñjayuṁ.

    “Māra’s army has arrived; bhikkhus, you should be aware of them.” Those monks grew keen, hearing the Buddha’s instruction. The army fled from those free of passion, and not a single hair was stirred!

    ‘सब्बे विजितसङ्गामा, भयातीता यसस्सिनो; मोदन्ति सह भूतेहि, सावका ते जनेसुताऽ”ति।

    ‘Sabbe vijitasaṅgāmā, bhayātītā yasassino; Modanti saha bhūtehi, sāvakā te janesutā’”ti.

    “All triumphant in battle, so fearless and glorious. They rejoice with all the spirits, the disciples well-known among men.”

    महासमयसुत्तं निट्ठितं सत्तमं।

    Mahāsamayasuttaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ sattamaṁ.
