    The Benefits of Love

    एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे। तत्र खो भगवा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “भिक्खवो”ति।

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “bhikkhavo”ti.

    So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus, “Bhikkhus!”

    “भदन्ते”ति ते भिक्खू भगवतो पच्चस्सोसुं। भगवा एतदवोच:

    “Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ. Bhagavā etadavoca:

    “Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:

    “मेत्ताय, भिक्खवे, चेतोविमुत्तिया आसेविताय भाविताय बहुलीकताय यानीकताय वत्थुकताय अनुट्ठिताय परिचिताय सुसमारद्धाय अट्ठानिसंसा पाटिकङ्खा। कतमे अट्ठ? सुखं सुपति, सुखं पटिबुज्झति, न पापकं सुपिनं पस्सति, मनुस्सानं पियो होति, अमनुस्सानं पियो होति, देवता रक्खन्ति, नास्स अग्गि वा विसं वा सत्थं वा कमति, उत्तरिं अप्पटिविज्झन्तो ब्रह्मलोकूपगो होति। मेत्ताय, भिक्खवे, चेतोविमुत्तिया आसेविताय भाविताय बहुलीकताय यानीकताय वत्थुकताय अनुट्ठिताय परिचिताय सुसमारद्धाय इमे अट्ठानिसंसा पाटिकङ्खाति।

    “Mettāya, bhikkhave, cetovimuttiyā āsevitāya bhāvitāya bahulīkatāya yānīkatāya vatthukatāya anuṭṭhitāya paricitāya susamāraddhāya aṭṭhānisaṁsā pāṭikaṅkhā. Katame aṭṭha? Sukhaṁ supati, sukhaṁ paṭibujjhati, na pāpakaṁ supinaṁ passati, manussānaṁ piyo hoti, amanussānaṁ piyo hoti, devatā rakkhanti, nāssa aggi vā visaṁ vā satthaṁ vā kamati, uttariṁ appaṭivijjhanto brahmalokūpago hoti. Mettāya, bhikkhave, cetovimuttiyā āsevitāya bhāvitāya bahulīkatāya yānīkatāya vatthukatāya anuṭṭhitāya paricitāya susamāraddhāya ime aṭṭhānisaṁsā pāṭikaṅkhāti.

    “Bhikkhus, you can expect eight benefits when the heart’s release by love has been cultivated, developed, and practiced, made a vehicle and a basis, kept up, consolidated, and properly implemented. What eight? You sleep at ease. You wake happily. You don’t have bad dreams. Humans love you. Non-humans love you. Deities protect you. You can’t be harmed by fire, poison, or blade. If you don’t reach any higher, you’ll be reborn in a Brahmā realm. You can expect these eight benefits when the heart’s release by love has been cultivated, developed, and practiced, made a vehicle and a basis, kept up, consolidated, and properly implemented.

    यो च मेत्तं भावयति, अप्पमाणं पटिस्सतो; तनू संयोजना होन्ति, पस्सतो उपधिक्खयं।

    Yo ca mettaṁ bhāvayati, appamāṇaṁ paṭissato; Tanū saṁyojanā honti, passato upadhikkhayaṁ.

    A mindful one who develops limitless love weakens the fetters, seeing the ending of attachments.

    एकम्पि चे पाणमदुट्ठचित्तो, मेत्तायति कुसली तेन होति; सब्बे च पाणे मनसानुकम्पी, पहूतमरियो पकरोति पुञ्ञं।

    Ekampi ce pāṇamaduṭṭhacitto, Mettāyati kusalī tena hoti; Sabbe ca pāṇe manasānukampī, Pahūtamariyo pakaroti puññaṁ.

    Loving just one creature with a hateless heart makes you a good person. Compassionate for all creatures, a noble one creates abundant merit.

    ये सत्तसण्डं पथविं विजेत्वा, राजिसयो यजमाना अनुपरियगा; अस्समेधं पुरिसमेधं, सम्मापासं वाजपेय्यं निरग्गळं।

    Ye sattasaṇḍaṁ pathaviṁ vijetvā, Rājisayo yajamānā anupariyagā; Assamedhaṁ purisamedhaṁ, Sammāpāsaṁ vājapeyyaṁ niraggaḷaṁ.

    The royal potentates conquered this land and traveled around sponsoring sacrifices—horse sacrifice, human sacrifice, the sacrifices of the ‘casting of the yoke-pin’, the ‘royal soma drinking’, and the ‘unbarred’.

    मेत्तस्स चित्तस्स सुभावितस्स, कलम्पि ते नानुभवन्ति सोळसिं; चन्दप्पभा तारगणाव सब्बे, यथा न अग्घन्ति कलम्पि सोळसिं।

    Mettassa cittassa subhāvitassa, Kalampi te nānubhavanti soḷasiṁ; Candappabhā tāragaṇāva sabbe, Yathā na agghanti kalampi soḷasiṁ.

    These are not worth a sixteenth part of the mind developed with love, as all the constellations of stars aren’t worth a sixteenth part of the moon’s light.

    यो न हन्ति न घातेति, न जिनाति न जापये; मेत्तंसो सब्बभूतानं, वेरं तस्स न केनची”ति।

    Yo na hanti na ghāteti, na jināti na jāpaye; Mettaṁso sabbabhūtānaṁ, veraṁ tassa na kenacī”ti.

    Don’t kill or cause others to kill, don’t conquer or encourage others to conquer, with love for all sentient beings, you’ll have no enmity for anyone.”
