    “चत्तारोमे, भिक्खवे, पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं। कतमे चत्तारो?

    “Cattārome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Katame cattāro?

    “Bhikkhus, these four people are found in the world. What four?

      निकट्ठकायो अनिकट्ठचित्तो,

      Nikaṭṭhakāyo anikaṭṭhacitto,

      One is on retreat in body, but not mind;

    अनिकट्ठकायो निकट्ठचित्तो,

    anikaṭṭhakāyo nikaṭṭhacitto,

    one is on retreat in mind, but not body;

    अनिकट्ठकायो च अनिकट्ठचित्तो च,

    anikaṭṭhakāyo ca anikaṭṭhacitto ca,

    one is on retreat in neither body nor mind; and

    निकट्ठकायो च निकट्ठचित्तो च।

    nikaṭṭhakāyo ca nikaṭṭhacitto ca.

    one is on retreat in both body and mind.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो निकट्ठकायो होति अनिकट्ठचित्तो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो अरञ्ञवनपत्थानि पन्तानि सेनासनानि पटिसेवति। सो तत्थ कामवितक्कम्पि वितक्केति ब्यापादवितक्कम्पि वितक्केति विहिंसावितक्कम्पि वितक्केति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो निकट्ठकायो होति अनिकट्ठचित्तो।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo nikaṭṭhakāyo hoti anikaṭṭhacitto? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo araññavanapatthāni1 pantāni senāsanāni paṭisevati. So tattha kāmavitakkampi vitakketi byāpādavitakkampi vitakketi vihiṁsāvitakkampi vitakketi. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo nikaṭṭhakāyo hoti anikaṭṭhacitto.

    And how is a person on retreat in body, but not mind? It’s when a person frequents remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest. But they think sensual, malicious, and cruel thoughts. That’s how a person is on retreat in body, but not mind.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो अनिकट्ठकायो होति निकट्ठचित्तो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो नहेव खो अरञ्ञवनपत्थानि पन्तानि सेनासनानि पटिसेवति। सो तत्थ नेक्खम्मवितक्कम्पि वितक्केति अब्यापादवितक्कम्पि वितक्केति अविहिंसावितक्कम्पि वितक्केति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो अनिकट्ठकायो होति निकट्ठचित्तो।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo anikaṭṭhakāyo hoti nikaṭṭhacitto? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo naheva kho araññavanapatthāni pantāni senāsanāni paṭisevati. So tattha nekkhammavitakkampi vitakketi abyāpādavitakkampi vitakketi avihiṁsāvitakkampi vitakketi. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo anikaṭṭhakāyo hoti nikaṭṭhacitto.

    And how is a person on retreat in mind, but not body? It’s when a person doesn’t frequent remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest. But they think thoughts of renunciation, good will, and harmlessness. That’s how a person is on retreat in mind, but not body.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो अनिकट्ठकायो च होति अनिकट्ठचित्तो च? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो नहेव खो अरञ्ञवनपत्थानि पन्तानि सेनासनानि पटिसेवति। सो तत्थ कामवितक्कम्पि वितक्केति ब्यापादवितक्कम्पि वितक्केति विहिंसावितक्कम्पि वितक्केति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो अनिकट्ठकायो च होति अनिकट्ठचित्तो च।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo anikaṭṭhakāyo ca hoti anikaṭṭhacitto ca? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo naheva kho araññavanapatthāni pantāni senāsanāni paṭisevati. So tattha kāmavitakkampi vitakketi byāpādavitakkampi vitakketi vihiṁsāvitakkampi vitakketi. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo anikaṭṭhakāyo ca hoti anikaṭṭhacitto ca.

    And how is a person on retreat in neither body nor mind? It’s when a person doesn’t frequent remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest. And they think sensual, malicious, and cruel thoughts. That’s how a person is on retreat in neither body nor mind.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो निकट्ठकायो च होति निकट्ठचित्तो च? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो अरञ्ञवनपत्थानि पन्तानि सेनासनानि पटिसेवति। सो तत्थ नेक्खम्मवितक्कम्पि वितक्केति अब्यापादवितक्कम्पि वितक्केति अविहिंसावितक्कम्पि वितक्केति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो निकट्ठकायो च होति निकट्ठचित्तो च।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo nikaṭṭhakāyo ca hoti nikaṭṭhacitto ca? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo araññavanapatthāni pantāni senāsanāni paṭisevati. So tattha nekkhammavitakkampi vitakketi abyāpādavitakkampi vitakketi avihiṁsāvitakkampi vitakketi. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo nikaṭṭhakāyo ca hoti nikaṭṭhacitto ca.

    And how is a person on retreat in both body and mind? It’s when a person frequents remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest. And they think thoughts of renunciation, good will, and harmlessness. That’s how a person is on retreat in both body and mind.

    इमे खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिन्”ति।

    Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmin”ti.

    These are the four people found in the world.”
