Lower Fetters
“पञ्चिमानि, भिक्खवे, ओरम्भागियानि संयोजनानि। कतमानि पञ्च? सक्कायदिट्ठि, विचिकिच्छा, सीलब्बतपरामासो, कामच्छन्दो, ब्यापादो—इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चोरम्भागियानि संयोजनानि।
“Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, orambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni. Katamāni pañca? Sakkāyadiṭṭhi, vicikicchā, sīlabbataparāmāso, kāmacchando, byāpādo—imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañcorambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni.
“Bhikkhus, there are five lower fetters. What five? Identity view, doubt, misapprehension of precepts and observances, sensual desire, and ill will. These are the five lower fetters.
इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चन्नं ओरम्भागियानं संयोजनानं पहानाय …पे… इमे चत्तारो सतिपट्ठाना भावेतब्बा”ति।
Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcannaṁ orambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ pahānāya …pe… ime cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvetabbā”ti.
To give up these five lower fetters you should develop the four kinds of mindfulness meditation. …”
