Regarded as Foremost
“चतस्सो इमा, भिक्खवे, अग्गपञ्ञत्तियो। कतमा चतस्सो? एतदग्गं, भिक्खवे, अत्तभावीनं यदिदं—राहु असुरिन्दो। एतदग्गं, भिक्खवे, कामभोगीनं यदिदं—राजा मन्धाता। एतदग्गं, भिक्खवे, आधिपतेय्यानं यदिदं—मारो पापिमा। सदेवके, भिक्खवे, लोके समारके सब्रह्मके सस्समणब्राह्मणिया पजाय सदेवमनुस्साय तथागतो अग्गमक्खायति अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो। इमा खो, भिक्खवे, चतस्सो अग्गपञ्ञत्तियोति।
“Catasso imā, bhikkhave, aggapaññattiyo. Katamā catasso? Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, attabhāvīnaṁ yadidaṁ—rāhu asurindo. Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, kāmabhogīnaṁ yadidaṁ—rājā mandhātā. Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, ādhipateyyānaṁ yadidaṁ—māro pāpimā. Sadevake, bhikkhave, loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya tathāgato aggamakkhāyati arahaṁ sammāsambuddho. Imā kho, bhikkhave, catasso aggapaññattiyoti.
“Bhikkhus, these four are regarded as foremost. What four? The foremost in size of life-form is Rāhu, lord of demons. The foremost pleasure seeker is King Mandhātā. The foremost in sovereignty is Māra the Wicked. In this world—with its gods, Māras and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, gods and humans—a Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha is said to be the best. These are the four regarded as foremost.
राहुग्गं अत्तभावीनं, मन्धाता कामभोगिनं; मारो आधिपतेय्यानं, इद्धिया यससा जलं।
Rāhuggaṁ1 attabhāvīnaṁ, mandhātā kāmabhoginaṁ; Māro ādhipateyyānaṁ, iddhiyā yasasā jalaṁ.
Rāhu is foremost in size of life-form, Mandhātā in enjoying sensual pleasures, Māra in sovereignty, shining with power and glory.
उद्धं तिरियं अपाचीनं, यावताजगतोगति; सदेवकस्स लोकस्स, बुद्धो अग्गो पवुच्चती”ति।
Uddhaṁ tiriyaṁ apācīnaṁ, yāvatājagatogati; Sadevakassa lokassa, buddho aggo pavuccatī”ti.
Above, below, all round, as far as the earth extends; in all the world with its gods, the Buddha is declared foremost.”
