    “चत्तारोमे, भिक्खवे, पुञ्ञाभिसन्दा कुसलाभिसन्दा सुखस्साहारा सोवग्गिका सुखविपाका सग्गसंवत्तनिका इट्ठाय कन्ताय मनापाय हिताय सुखाय संवत्तन्ति। कतमे चत्तारो?

    “Bhikkhus, there are these four kinds of overflowing merit, overflowing goodness. They nurture happiness and are conducive to heaven, ripening in happiness and leading to heaven. They lead to what is likable, desirable, agreeable, to welfare and happiness. What four?

    When a bhikkhu enters and remains in a limitless immersion of heart while using a robe, the overflowing of merit for the donor is limitless …

    When a bhikkhu enters and remains in a limitless immersion of heart while using lodgings, the overflowing of merit for the donor is limitless …

    When a bhikkhu enters and remains in a limitless immersion of heart while using medicines and supplies for the sick, the overflowing of merit for the donor is limitless …

    Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro puññābhisandā kusalābhisandā sukhassāhārā sovaggikā sukhavipākā saggasaṁvattanikā iṭṭhāya kantāya manāpāya hitāya sukhāya saṁvattanti.

    These are the four kinds of overflowing merit, overflowing goodness. They nurture happiness and are conducive to heaven, ripening in happiness and leading to heaven. They lead to what is likable, desirable, agreeable, to welfare and happiness.

    इमेहि च पन, भिक्खवे, चतूहि पुञ्ञाभिसन्देहि कुसलाभिसन्देहि समन्नागतस्स अरियसावकस्स न सुकरं पुञ्ञस्स पमाणं गहेतुं: ‘एत्तको पुञ्ञाभिसन्दो कुसलाभिसन्दो सुखस्साहारो सोवग्गिको सुखविपाको सग्गसंवत्तनिको इट्ठाय कन्ताय मनापाय हिताय सुखाय संवत्ततीऽति। अथ खो असङ्ख्येय्यो अप्पमेय्यो महापुञ्ञक्खन्धोत्वेव सङ्ख्यं गच्छति।

    Imehi ca pana, bhikkhave, catūhi puññābhisandehi kusalābhisandehi samannāgatassa ariyasāvakassa na sukaraṁ puññassa pamāṇaṁ gahetuṁ: ‘ettako puññābhisando kusalābhisando sukhassāhāro sovaggiko sukhavipāko saggasaṁvattaniko iṭṭhāya kantāya manāpāya hitāya sukhāya saṁvattatī’ti. Atha kho asaṅkhyeyyo1 appameyyo mahāpuññakkhandhotveva saṅkhyaṁ2 gacchati.

    When a noble disciple has these four kinds of overflowing merit and goodness, it’s not easy to grasp how much merit they have by saying that this is the extent of their overflowing merit … that leads to happiness. It’s simply reckoned as an incalculable, immeasurable, great mass of merit.

    सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, महासमुद्दे न सुकरं उदकस्स पमाणं गहेतुं: ‘एत्तकानि उदकाळ्हकानीति वा, एत्तकानि उदकाळ्हकसतानीति वा, एत्तकानि उदकाळ्हकसहस्सानीति वा, एत्तकानि उदकाळ्हकसतसहस्सानीति वाऽ, अथ खो असङ्ख्येय्यो अप्पमेय्यो महाउदकक्खन्धोत्वेव सङ्ख्यं गच्छति;

    Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, mahāsamudde na sukaraṁ udakassa pamāṇaṁ gahetuṁ: ‘ettakāni udakāḷhakānīti vā, ettakāni udakāḷhakasatānīti vā, ettakāni udakāḷhakasahassānīti vā, ettakāni udakāḷhakasatasahassānīti vā’, atha kho asaṅkhyeyyo appameyyo mahāudakakkhandhotveva saṅkhyaṁ gacchati;

    It’s like trying to grasp how much water is in the ocean. It’s not easy to say how many gallons, how many hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands of gallons there are. It’s simply reckoned as an incalculable, immeasurable, great mass of water.

    एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, इमेहि चतूहि पुञ्ञाभिसन्देहि कुसलाभिसन्देहि समन्नागतस्स अरियसावकस्स न सुकरं पुञ्ञस्स पमाणं गहेतुं: ‘एत्तको पुञ्ञाभिसन्दो कुसलाभिसन्दो सुखस्साहारो सोवग्गिको सुखविपाको सग्गसंवत्तनिको इट्ठाय कन्ताय मनापाय हिताय सुखाय संवत्ततीऽति। अथ खो असङ्ख्येय्यो अप्पमेय्यो महापुञ्ञक्खन्धोत्वेव सङ्ख्यं गच्छतीति।

    evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, imehi catūhi puññābhisandehi kusalābhisandehi samannāgatassa ariyasāvakassa na sukaraṁ puññassa pamāṇaṁ gahetuṁ: ‘ettako puññābhisando kusalābhisando sukhassāhāro sovaggiko sukhavipāko saggasaṁvattaniko iṭṭhāya kantāya manāpāya hitāya sukhāya saṁvattatī’ti. Atha kho asaṅkhyeyyo appameyyo mahāpuññakkhandhotveva saṅkhyaṁ gacchatīti.

    In the same way, when a noble disciple has these four kinds of overflowing merit it’s simply reckoned as an incalculable, immeasurable, great mass of merit.

    महोदधिं अपरिमितं महासरं, बहुभेरवं रतनवरानमालयं; नज्जो यथा नरगणसङ्घसेविता, पुथू सवन्ती उपयन्ति सागरं।

    Mahodadhiṁ aparimitaṁ mahāsaraṁ, Bahubheravaṁ ratanavarānamālayaṁ; Najjo yathā naragaṇasaṅghasevitā, Puthū savantī upayanti sāgaraṁ.

    Hosts of people use the rivers, and though the rivers are many, all reach the great deep, the boundless ocean, the cruel sea that’s home to precious gems.

    एवं नरं अन्नदपानवत्थदं, सेय्यानिसज्जत्थरणस्स दायकं; पुञ्ञस्स धारा उपयन्ति पण्डितं, नज्जो यथा वारिवहाव सागरन्”ति।

    Evaṁ naraṁ annadapānavatthadaṁ, Seyyānisajjattharaṇassa dāyakaṁ; Puññassa dhārā upayanti paṇḍitaṁ, Najjo yathā vārivahāva sāgaran”ti.

    In the same way, when a person gives food, drink, and clothes; and they’re a giver of beds, seats, and mats—the streams of merit reach that astute person, as the rivers bring their waters to the sea.”

    पठमं।

    Paṭhamaṁ.
