Percent Mass per Volume
Definition 1
A unit of percentage concentration expressed as a fraction of a component by mass in the entire volume of a resulting mixture. The standard conditions for temperature and pressure apply. The mass-volume percentage is used for liquid solute/solution systems and systems containing solid phase components. The concept also refers to the weight-volume percentage concentration given that standard values for specific gravity of the solute are used. (NCI Thesaurus)
Definition 2
A percent ratio of weight to volume, defined by the equation: [weight of solute (in gm)/volume of solution (in dl)](100). Since the numerator and denominator of this ratio have different units, it is not a true percentage. A 1% w/v solution is defined as being 1 gram of solute dissolved in 100 milliliters of solvent.
