    The Purification of Alms

    एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा राजगहे विहरति वेळुवने कलन्दकनिवापे।

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.

    So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground.

    अथ खो आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो सायन्हसमयं पटिसल्लाना वुट्ठितो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो आयस्मन्तं सारिपुत्तं भगवा एतदवोच: “विप्पसन्नानि खो ते, सारिपुत्त, इन्द्रियानि, परिसुद्धो छविवण्णो परियोदातो। कतमेन खो त्वं, सारिपुत्त, विहारेन एतरहि बहुलं विहरसी”ति?

    Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ bhagavā etadavoca: “Vippasannāni kho te, sāriputta, indriyāni, parisuddho chavivaṇṇo pariyodāto. Katamena kho tvaṁ, sāriputta, vihārena etarahi bahulaṁ1 viharasī”ti?

    Then in the late afternoon, Sāriputta came out of retreat and went to the Buddha. He bowed and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him, “Sāriputta, your faculties are so very clear, and your complexion is pure and bright. What kind of meditation are you usually practicing these days?”

    “सुञ्ञताविहारेन खो अहं, भन्ते, एतरहि बहुलं विहरामी”ति।

    “Suññatāvihārena kho ahaṁ, bhante, etarahi bahulaṁ viharāmī”ti.

    “Sir, these days I usually practice the meditation on emptiness.”

    “साधु साधु, सारिपुत्त। महापुरिसविहारेन किर त्वं, सारिपुत्त, एतरहि बहुलं विहरसि। महापुरिसविहारो एसो, सारिपुत्त, यदिदं—सुञ्ञता।

    “Sādhu sādhu, sāriputta. Mahāpurisavihārena kira tvaṁ, sāriputta, etarahi bahulaṁ viharasi. Mahāpurisavihāro eso, sāriputta, yadidaṁ—suññatā.

    “Good, good, Sāriputta! It seems you usually practice the meditation of a great man. For emptiness is the meditation of a great man.

    तस्मातिह, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु सचे आकङ्खेय्य: ‘सुञ्ञताविहारेन बहुलं विहरेय्यन्ऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना इति पटिसञ्चिक्खितब्बं: ‘येन चाहं मग्गेन गामं पिण्डाय पाविसिं, यस्मिञ्च पदेसे पिण्डाय अचरिं, येन च मग्गेन गामतो पिण्डाय पटिक्कमिं, अत्थि नु खो मे तत्थ चक्खुविञ्ञेय्येसु रूपेसु छन्दो वा रागो वा दोसो वा मोहो वा पटिघं वापि चेतसोऽति? सचे, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘येन चाहं मग्गेन गामं पिण्डाय पाविसिं, यस्मिञ्च पदेसे पिण्डाय अचरिं, येन च मग्गेन गामतो पिण्डाय पटिक्कमिं, अत्थि मे तत्थ चक्खुविञ्ञेय्येसु रूपेसु छन्दो वा रागो वा दोसो वा मोहो वा पटिघं वापि चेतसोऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना तेसंयेव पापकानं अकुसलानं धम्मानं पहानाय वायमितब्बं। सचे पन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘येन चाहं मग्गेन गामं पिण्डाय पाविसिं, यस्मिञ्च पदेसे पिण्डाय अचरिं, येन च मग्गेन गामतो पिण्डाय पटिक्कमिं, नत्थि मे तत्थ चक्खुविञ्ञेय्येसु रूपेसु छन्दो वा रागो वा दोसो वा मोहो वा पटिघं वापि चेतसोऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना तेनेव पीतिपामोज्जेन विहातब्बं अहोरत्तानुसिक्खिना कुसलेसु धम्मेसु।

    Tasmātiha, sāriputta, bhikkhu sace ākaṅkheyya: ‘suññatāvihārena bahulaṁ vihareyyan’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ: ‘yena cāhaṁ maggena gāmaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ, yasmiñca padese piṇḍāya acariṁ, yena ca maggena gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamiṁ, atthi nu kho me tattha cakkhuviññeyyesu rūpesu chando vā rāgo vā doso vā moho vā paṭighaṁ vāpi cetaso’ti? Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘yena cāhaṁ maggena gāmaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ, yasmiñca padese piṇḍāya acariṁ, yena ca maggena gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamiṁ, atthi me tattha cakkhuviññeyyesu rūpesu chando vā rāgo vā doso vā moho vā paṭighaṁ vāpi cetaso’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā tesaṁyeva pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ. Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘yena cāhaṁ maggena gāmaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ, yasmiñca padese piṇḍāya acariṁ, yena ca maggena gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamiṁ, natthi me tattha cakkhuviññeyyesu rūpesu chando vā rāgo vā doso vā moho vā paṭighaṁ vāpi cetaso’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

    Now, a bhikkhu might wish: ‘May I usually practice the meditation on emptiness.’ So they should reflect: ‘Along the path that I went for alms, or in the place I wandered for alms, or along the path that I returned from alms, was there any desire or greed or hate or delusion or repulsion in my heart for sights known by the eye?’ Suppose that, upon checking, a bhikkhu knows that there was such desire or greed or hate or delusion or repulsion in their heart, they should make an effort to give up those unskillful qualities. But suppose that, upon checking, a bhikkhu knows that there was no such desire or greed or hate or delusion or repulsion in their heart, they should meditate with rapture and joy, training day and night in skillful qualities.

    पुन चपरं, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना इति पटिसञ्चिक्खितब्बं: ‘येन चाहं मग्गेन गामं पिण्डाय पाविसिं, यस्मिञ्च पदेसे पिण्डाय अचरिं, येन च मग्गेन गामतो पिण्डाय पटिक्कमिं, अत्थि नु खो मे तत्थ सोतविञ्ञेय्येसु सद्देसु …पे… घानविञ्ञेय्येसु गन्धेसु … जिव्हाविञ्ञेय्येसु रसेसु … कायविञ्ञेय्येसु फोट्ठब्बेसु … मनोविञ्ञेय्येसु धम्मेसु छन्दो वा रागो वा दोसो वा मोहो वा पटिघं वापि चेतसोऽति? सचे, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘येन चाहं मग्गेन गामं पिण्डाय पाविसिं, यस्मिञ्च पदेसे पिण्डाय अचरिं, येन च मग्गेन गामतो पिण्डाय पटिक्कमिं, अत्थि मे तत्थ मनोविञ्ञेय्येसु धम्मेसु छन्दो वा रागो वा दोसो वा मोहो वा पटिघं वापि चेतसोऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना तेसंयेव पापकानं अकुसलानं धम्मानं पहानाय वायमितब्बं। सचे पन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘येन चाहं मग्गेन गामं पिण्डाय पाविसिं, यस्मिञ्च पदेसे पिण्डाय अचरिं, येन च मग्गेन गामतो पिण्डाय पटिक्कमिं, नत्थि मे तत्थ मनोविञ्ञेय्येसु धम्मेसु छन्दो वा रागो वा दोसो वा मोहो वा पटिघं वापि चेतसोऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना तेनेव पीतिपामोज्जेन विहातब्बं अहोरत्तानुसिक्खिना कुसलेसु धम्मेसु।

    Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ: ‘yena cāhaṁ maggena gāmaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ, yasmiñca padese piṇḍāya acariṁ, yena ca maggena gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamiṁ, atthi nu kho me tattha sotaviññeyyesu saddesu …pe… ghānaviññeyyesu gandhesu … jivhāviññeyyesu rasesu … kāyaviññeyyesu phoṭṭhabbesu … manoviññeyyesu dhammesu chando vā rāgo vā doso vā moho vā paṭighaṁ vāpi cetaso’ti? Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘yena cāhaṁ maggena gāmaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ, yasmiñca padese piṇḍāya acariṁ, yena ca maggena gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamiṁ, atthi me tattha manoviññeyyesu dhammesu chando vā rāgo vā doso vā moho vā paṭighaṁ vāpi cetaso’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā tesaṁyeva pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ. Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘yena cāhaṁ maggena gāmaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ, yasmiñca padese piṇḍāya acariṁ, yena ca maggena gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamiṁ, natthi me tattha manoviññeyyesu dhammesu chando vā rāgo vā doso vā moho vā paṭighaṁ vāpi cetaso’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

    Furthermore, a bhikkhu should reflect: ‘Along the path that I went for alms, or in the place I wandered for alms, or along the path that I returned from alms, was there any desire or greed or hate or delusion or repulsion in my heart for sounds known by the ear … smells known by the nose … tastes known by the tongue … touches known by the body … thoughts known by the mind?’ Suppose that, upon checking, a bhikkhu knows that there was such desire or greed or hate or delusion or repulsion in their heart, they should make an effort to give up those unskillful qualities. But suppose that, upon checking, a bhikkhu knows that there was no such desire or greed or hate or delusion or repulsion in their heart, they should meditate with rapture and joy, training day and night in skillful qualities.

    पुन चपरं, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना इति पटिसञ्चिक्खितब्बं: ‘पहीना नु खो मे पञ्च कामगुणाऽति? सचे, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘अप्पहीना खो मे पञ्च कामगुणाऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना पञ्चन्नं कामगुणानं पहानाय वायमितब्बं। सचे पन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘पहीना खो मे पञ्च कामगुणाऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना तेनेव पीतिपामोज्जेन विहातब्बं अहोरत्तानुसिक्खिना कुसलेसु धम्मेसु।

    Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ: ‘pahīnā nu kho me pañca kāmaguṇā’ti? Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘appahīnā kho me pañca kāmaguṇā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā pañcannaṁ kāmaguṇānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ. Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘pahīnā kho me pañca kāmaguṇā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

    Furthermore, a bhikkhu should reflect: ‘Have I given up the five kinds of sensual stimulation?’ Suppose that, upon checking, a bhikkhu knows that they have not given them up, they should make an effort to do so. But suppose that, upon checking, a bhikkhu knows that they have given them up, they should meditate with rapture and joy, training day and night in skillful qualities.

    पुन चपरं, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना इति पटिसञ्चिक्खितब्बं: ‘पहीना नु खो मे पञ्च नीवरणाऽति? सचे, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘अप्पहीना खो मे पञ्च नीवरणाऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना पञ्चन्नं नीवरणानं पहानाय वायमितब्बं। सचे पन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘पहीना खो मे पञ्च नीवरणाऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना तेनेव पीतिपामोज्जेन विहातब्बं अहोरत्तानुसिक्खिना कुसलेसु धम्मेसु।

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘appahīnā kho me pañca nīvaraṇā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā pañcannaṁ nīvaraṇānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ. Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘pahīnā kho me pañca nīvaraṇā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

    पुन चपरं, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना इति पटिसञ्चिक्खितब्बं: ‘परिञ्ञाता नु खो मे पञ्चुपादानक्खन्धाऽति? सचे, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘अपरिञ्ञाता खो मे पञ्चुपादानक्खन्धाऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना पञ्चन्नं उपादानक्खन्धानं परिञ्ञाय वायमितब्बं। सचे पन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘परिञ्ञाता खो मे पञ्चुपादानक्खन्धाऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना तेनेव पीतिपामोज्जेन विहातब्बं अहोरत्तानुसिक्खिना कुसलेसु धम्मेसु।

    Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ: ‘pariññātā nu kho me pañcupādānakkhandhā’ti? Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘apariññātā kho me pañcupādānakkhandhā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā pañcannaṁ upādānakkhandhānaṁ pariññāya vāyamitabbaṁ. Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘pariññātā kho me pañcupādānakkhandhā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

    Furthermore, a bhikkhu should reflect: ‘Have I completely understood the five grasping aggregates?’ Suppose that, upon checking, a bhikkhu knows that they have not completely understood them, they should make an effort to do so. But suppose that, upon checking, a bhikkhu knows that they have completely understood them, they should meditate with rapture and joy, training day and night in skillful qualities.

    पुन चपरं, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना इति पटिसञ्चिक्खितब्बं: ‘भाविता नु खो मे चत्तारो सतिपट्ठानाऽति? सचे, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘अभाविता खो मे चत्तारो सतिपट्ठानाऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना चतुन्नं सतिपट्ठानानं भावनाय वायमितब्बं। सचे पन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘भाविता खो मे चत्तारो सतिपट्ठानाऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना तेनेव पीतिपामोज्जेन विहातब्बं अहोरत्तानुसिक्खिना कुसलेसु धम्मेसु।

    Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ: ‘bhāvitā nu kho me cattāro satipaṭṭhānā’ti? Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘abhāvitā kho me cattāro satipaṭṭhānā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā catunnaṁ satipaṭṭhānānaṁ bhāvanāya vāyamitabbaṁ. Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘bhāvitā kho me cattāro satipaṭṭhānā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

    Furthermore, a bhikkhu should reflect: ‘Have I developed the four kinds of mindfulness meditation?’ Suppose that, upon checking, a bhikkhu knows that they haven’t developed them, they should make an effort to do so. But suppose that, upon checking, a bhikkhu knows that they have developed them, they should meditate with rapture and joy, training day and night in skillful qualities.

    पुन चपरं, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना इति पटिसञ्चिक्खितब्बं: ‘भाविता नु खो मे चत्तारो सम्मप्पधानाऽति? सचे, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘अभाविता खो मे चत्तारो सम्मप्पधानाऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना चतुन्नं सम्मप्पधानानं भावनाय वायमितब्बं। सचे पन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘भाविता खो मे चत्तारो सम्मप्पधानाऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना तेनेव पीतिपामोज्जेन विहातब्बं अहोरत्तानुसिक्खिना कुसलेसु धम्मेसु। पुन चपरं, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना इति पटिसञ्चिक्खितब्बं: ‘भाविता नु खो मे चत्तारो इद्धिपादाऽति? सचे, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘अभाविता खो मे चत्तारो इद्धिपादाऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना चतुन्नं इद्धिपादानं भावनाय वायमितब्बं। सचे पन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘भाविता खो मे चत्तारो इद्धिपादाऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना तेनेव पीतिपामोज्जेन विहातब्बं अहोरत्तानुसिक्खिना कुसलेसु धम्मेसु। पुन चपरं, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना इति पटिसञ्चिक्खितब्बं: ‘भावितानि नु खो मे पञ्चिन्द्रियानीऽति? सचे, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘अभावितानि खो मे पञ्चिन्द्रियानीऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना पञ्चन्नं इन्द्रियानं भावनाय वायमितब्बं। सचे पन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘भावितानि खो मे पञ्चिन्द्रियानीऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना तेनेव पीतिपामोज्जेन विहातब्बं अहोरत्तानुसिक्खिना कुसलेसु धम्मेसु। पुन चपरं, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना इति पटिसञ्चिक्खितब्बं: ‘भावितानि नु खो मे पञ्च बलानीऽति? सचे, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘अभावितानि खो मे पञ्च बलानीऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना पञ्चन्नं बलानं भावनाय वायमितब्बं। सचे पन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘भावितानि खो मे पञ्च बलानीऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना तेनेव पीतिपामोज्जेन विहातब्बं अहोरत्तानुसिक्खिना कुसलेसु धम्मेसु। पुन चपरं, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना इति पटिसञ्चिक्खितब्बं: ‘भाविता नु खो मे सत्त बोज्झङ्गाऽति? सचे, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘अभाविता खो मे सत्त बोज्झङ्गाऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना सत्तन्नं बोज्झङ्गानं भावनाय वायमितब्बं। सचे पन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘भाविता खो मे सत्त बोज्झङ्गाऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना तेनेव पीतिपामोज्जेन विहातब्बं अहोरत्तानुसिक्खिना कुसलेसु धम्मेसु। पुन चपरं, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना इति पटिसञ्चिक्खितब्बं: ‘भावितो नु खो मे अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गोऽति? सचे, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘अभावितो खो मे अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गोऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना अरियस्स अट्ठङ्गिकस्स मग्गस्स भावनाय वायमितब्बं। सचे पन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘भावितो खो मे अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गोऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना तेनेव पीतिपामोज्जेन विहातब्बं अहोरत्तानुसिक्खिना कुसलेसु धम्मेसु।

    Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ: ‘bhāvitā nu kho me cattāro sammappadhānā’ti? Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘abhāvitā kho me cattāro sammappadhānā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā catunnaṁ sammappadhānānaṁ bhāvanāya vāyamitabbaṁ. Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘bhāvitā kho me cattāro sammappadhānā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu. Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ: ‘bhāvitā nu kho me cattāro iddhipādā’ti? Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘abhāvitā kho me cattāro iddhipādā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā catunnaṁ iddhipādānaṁ bhāvanāya vāyamitabbaṁ. Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘bhāvitā kho me cattāro iddhipādā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu. Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘bhāvitāni kho me pañca balānī’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu. Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ: ‘bhāvitā nu kho me satta bojjhaṅgā’ti? Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘abhāvitā kho me satta bojjhaṅgā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā sattannaṁ bojjhaṅgānaṁ bhāvanāya vāyamitabbaṁ. Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘bhāvitā kho me satta bojjhaṅgā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu. Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ: ‘bhāvito nu kho me ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo’ti? Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘abhāvito kho me ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā ariyassa aṭṭhaṅgikassa maggassa bhāvanāya vāyamitabbaṁ. Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘bhāvito kho me ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

    Furthermore, a bhikkhu should reflect: ‘Have I developed the four right efforts … the four bases of psychic power … the five faculties … the five powers … the seven awakening factors … the noble eightfold path?’ Suppose that, upon checking, a bhikkhu knows that they haven’t developed it, they should make an effort to do so. But suppose that, upon checking, a bhikkhu knows that they have developed it, they should meditate with rapture and joy, training day and night in skillful qualities.

    पुन चपरं, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना इति पटिसञ्चिक्खितब्बं: ‘भाविता नु खो मे समथो च विपस्सना चाऽति? सचे, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘अभाविता खो मे समथो च विपस्सना चाऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना समथविपस्सनानं भावनाय वायमितब्बं। सचे पन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु पच्चवेक्खमानो एवं जानाति: ‘भाविता खो मे समथो च विपस्सना चाऽति, तेन, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुना तेनेव पीतिपामोज्जेन विहातब्बं अहोरत्तानुसिक्खिना कुसलेसु धम्मेसु।

But suppose that, upon checking, a bhikkhu knows that they have realized them, they should meditate with rapture and joy, training day and night in skillful qualities.

    ये हि केचि, सारिपुत्त, अतीतमद्धानं समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा पिण्डपातं परिसोधेसुं, सब्बे ते एवमेव पच्चवेक्खित्वा पच्चवेक्खित्वा पिण्डपातं परिसोधेसुं। येपि हि केचि, सारिपुत्त, अनागतमद्धानं समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा पिण्डपातं परिसोधेस्सन्ति, सब्बे ते एवमेव पच्चवेक्खित्वा पच्चवेक्खित्वा पिण्डपातं परिसोधेस्सन्ति। येपि हि केचि, सारिपुत्त, एतरहि समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा पिण्डपातं परिसोधेन्ति, सब्बे ते एवमेव पच्चवेक्खित्वा पच्चवेक्खित्वा पिण्डपातं परिसोधेन्ति। तस्मातिह, सारिपुत्त, ‘पच्चवेक्खित्वा पच्चवेक्खित्वा पिण्डपातं परिसोधेस्सामाऽति—एवञ्हि वो, सारिपुत्त, सिक्खितब्बन्”ति।

    Ye hi keci, sāriputta, atītamaddhānaṁ samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā piṇḍapātaṁ parisodhesuṁ, sabbe te evameva paccavekkhitvā paccavekkhitvā piṇḍapātaṁ parisodhesuṁ. Yepi hi keci, sāriputta, anāgatamaddhānaṁ samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā piṇḍapātaṁ parisodhessanti, sabbe te evameva paccavekkhitvā paccavekkhitvā piṇḍapātaṁ parisodhessanti. Yepi hi keci, sāriputta, etarahi samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā piṇḍapātaṁ parisodhenti, sabbe te evameva paccavekkhitvā paccavekkhitvā piṇḍapātaṁ parisodhenti. Tasmātiha, sāriputta, ‘paccavekkhitvā paccavekkhitvā piṇḍapātaṁ parisodhessāmā’ti—evañhi vo, sāriputta, sikkhitabban”ti.

    Whether in the past, future, or present, all those who purify their almsfood do so by continually checking in this way. So, Sāriputta, you should all train like this: ‘We shall purify our almsfood by continually checking.’”

    इदमवोच भगवा। अत्तमनो आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो भगवतो भासितं अभिनन्दीति।

    Idamavoca bhagavā. Attamano āyasmā sāriputto bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandīti.

    That is what the Buddha said. Satisfied, Venerable Sāriputta was happy with what the Buddha said.

    पिण्डपातपारिसुद्धिसुत्तं निट्ठितं नवमं।

    Piṇḍapātapārisuddhisuttaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ navamaṁ.
