RIBOSOME
Pronunciation (US): | (GB): |
I. (noun)
Sense 1
Meaning:
An organelle in the cytoplasm of a living cell; they attach to mRNA and move down it one codon at a time and then stop until tRNA brings the required amino acid; when it reaches a stop codon it falls apart and releases the completed protein molecule for use by the cell
Example:
the ribosome is the site of protein synthesis
Classified under:
Hypernyms ("ribosome" is a kind of...):
cell organ; cell organelle; organelle (a specialized part of a cell; analogous to an organ)
Context examples:
This protein is involved in both chromatin decondensation and ribosome assembly.
(Nucleolin, NCI Thesaurus)
Demeclocycline binds to bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit and prevents binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis.
(Demeclocycline, NCI Thesaurus)
It releases ribosomes stalled at the 3' end of a mRNA and stimulates the exosome to rapidly degrade the transcript.
(Non-Stop Decay, NCI Thesaurus)
A lipid bilayer enclosing the part of the endoplasmic reticulum that has ribosomes located on the cytoplasmic-facing membrane.
(Membrane of the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum, NCI Thesaurus)
ODLs act on the ribosome — the molecular machine of individual cells that makes the proteins it needs to function — of bacterial cells.
(A New Class of Antibiotics to Combat Drug Resistance, The Titi Tudorancea Bulletin)
A lipid bilayer enclosing the portion of the endoplasmic reticulum that is free of ribosomes.
(Membrane of the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum, NCI Thesaurus)
Doxycycline binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, possibly to the 50S ribosomal subunit as well, thereby blocking the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex.
(Doxycycline, NCI Thesaurus)
Ubiquitination regulates protein degradation, chromatin remodeling, cell cycle progression, differentiation, gene expression, stress response, ribosome biogenesis, antigen presentation, apoptosis, signal transduction, transcriptional activation, biological clocks, receptor down regulation, and endocytosis.
(E3 Ubiquitin Ligase, NCI Thesaurus)
Doxycycline blocks binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis.
(Doxycycline Calcium, NCI Thesaurus)
Transport of messenger RNA from its nuclear site of transcription to the cytoplasm, where the message is translated into protein by ribosomes.
(mRNA Export, NCI Thesaurus)
