    Ruṇṇasutta

    Wailing

    “रुण्णमिदं, भिक्खवे, अरियस्स विनये यदिदं गीतं। उम्मत्तकमिदं, भिक्खवे, अरियस्स विनये यदिदं नच्चं। कोमारकमिदं, भिक्खवे, अरियस्स विनये यदिदं अतिवेलं दन्तविदंसकहसितं। तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, सेतुघातो गीते, सेतुघातो नच्चे, अलं वो धम्मप्पमोदितानं सतं सितं सितमत्ताया”ति।

    “Ruṇṇamidaṁ, bhikkhave, ariyassa vinaye yadidaṁ gītaṁ. Ummattakamidaṁ, bhikkhave, ariyassa vinaye yadidaṁ naccaṁ. Komārakamidaṁ, bhikkhave, ariyassa vinaye yadidaṁ ativelaṁ dantavidaṁsakahasitaṁ. Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, setughāto gīte, setughāto nacce, alaṁ vo dhammappamoditānaṁ sataṁ sitaṁ sitamattāyā”ti.

    “Singing is regarded as wailing in the training of the Noble One. Dancing is regarded as madness. Too much laughter, showing the teeth, is regarded as childish. So break off singing and dancing; and when you’re appropriately pleased, it’s enough to simply smile.”

    पञ्चमं।
