“पञ्चिमे, भिक्खवे, आदीनवा दुस्सीलस्स सीलविपत्तिया। कतमे पञ्च?
“Pañcime, bhikkhave, ādīnavā dussīlassa sīlavipattiyā. Katame pañca?
“Bhikkhus, there are these five drawbacks for an unethical person because of their failure in ethics. What five?
इध, भिक्खवे, दुस्सीलो सीलविपन्नो पमादाधिकरणं महतिं भोगजानिं निगच्छति। अयं, भिक्खवे, पठमो आदीनवो दुस्सीलस्स सीलविपत्तिया।
Idha, bhikkhave, dussīlo sīlavipanno pamādādhikaraṇaṁ mahatiṁ bhogajāniṁ nigacchati. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamo ādīnavo dussīlassa sīlavipattiyā.
Firstly, an unethical person loses substantial wealth on account of negligence. This is the first drawback.
पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, दुस्सीलस्स सीलविपन्नस्स पापको कित्तिसद्दो अब्भुग्गच्छति। अयं, भिक्खवे, दुतियो आदीनवो दुस्सीलस्स सीलविपत्तिया।
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, dussīlassa sīlavipannassa pāpako kittisaddo abbhuggacchati. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyo ādīnavo dussīlassa sīlavipattiyā.
Furthermore, an unethical person gets a bad reputation. This is the second drawback.
पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, दुस्सीलो सीलविपन्नो यञ्ञदेव परिसं उपसङ्कमति—यदि खत्तियपरिसं, यदि ब्राह्मणपरिसं, यदि गहपतिपरिसं, यदि समणपरिसं—अविसारदो उपसङ्कमति मङ्कुभूतो। अयं, भिक्खवे, ततियो आदीनवो दुस्सीलस्स सीलविपत्तिया।
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, dussīlo sīlavipanno yaññadeva parisaṁ upasaṅkamati—yadi khattiyaparisaṁ, yadi brāhmaṇaparisaṁ, yadi gahapatiparisaṁ, yadi samaṇaparisaṁ—avisārado upasaṅkamati maṅkubhūto. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, tatiyo ādīnavo dussīlassa sīlavipattiyā.
Furthermore, an unethical person enters any kind of assembly timid and embarrassed, whether it’s an assembly of aristocrats, brahmins, householders, or ascetics. This is the third drawback.
पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, दुस्सीलो सीलविपन्नो सम्मूळ्हो कालं करोति। अयं, भिक्खवे, चतुत्थो आदीनवो दुस्सीलस्स सीलविपत्तिया।
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, dussīlo sīlavipanno sammūḷho kālaṁ karoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, catuttho ādīnavo dussīlassa sīlavipattiyā.
Furthermore, an unethical person feels lost when they die. This is the fourth drawback.
पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, दुस्सीलो सीलविपन्नो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा अपायं दुग्गतिं विनिपातं निरयं उपपज्जति। अयं, भिक्खवे, पञ्चमो आदीनवो दुस्सीलस्स सीलविपत्तिया। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्च आदीनवा दुस्सीलस्स सीलविपत्तिया।
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, dussīlo sīlavipanno kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjati. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, pañcamo ādīnavo dussīlassa sīlavipattiyā. Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca ādīnavā dussīlassa sīlavipattiyā.
Furthermore, an unethical person, when their body breaks up, after death, is reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. This is the fifth drawback. These are the five drawbacks for an unethical person because of their failure in ethics.
पञ्चिमे, भिक्खवे, आनिसंसा सीलवतो सीलसम्पदाय। कतमे पञ्च? इध, भिक्खवे, सीलवा सीलसम्पन्नो अप्पमादाधिकरणं महन्तं भोगक्खन्धं अधिगच्छति। अयं, भिक्खवे, पठमो आनिसंसो सीलवतो सीलसम्पदाय।
Pañcime, bhikkhave, ānisaṁsā sīlavato sīlasampadāya. Katame pañca? Idha, bhikkhave, sīlavā sīlasampanno appamādādhikaraṇaṁ mahantaṁ bhogakkhandhaṁ adhigacchati. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamo ānisaṁso sīlavato sīlasampadāya.
There are these five benefits for an ethical person because of their accomplishment in ethics. What five? Firstly, an ethical person gains substantial wealth on account of diligence. This is the first benefit.
पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, सीलवतो सीलसम्पन्नस्स कल्याणो कित्तिसद्दो अब्भुग्गच्छति। अयं, भिक्खवे, दुतियो आनिसंसो सीलवतो सीलसम्पदाय।
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, sīlavato sīlasampannassa kalyāṇo kittisaddo abbhuggacchati. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyo ānisaṁso sīlavato sīlasampadāya.
Furthermore, an ethical person gets a good reputation. This is the second benefit.
पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, सीलवा सीलसम्पन्नो यञ्ञदेव परिसं उपसङ्कमति—यदि खत्तियपरिसं, यदि ब्राह्मणपरिसं, यदि गहपतिपरिसं, यदि समणपरिसं—विसारदो उपसङ्कमति अमङ्कुभूतो। अयं भिक्खवे, ततियो आनिसंसो सीलवतो सीलसम्पदाय।
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, sīlavā sīlasampanno yaññadeva parisaṁ upasaṅkamati—yadi khattiyaparisaṁ, yadi brāhmaṇaparisaṁ, yadi gahapatiparisaṁ, yadi samaṇaparisaṁ—visārado upasaṅkamati amaṅkubhūto. Ayaṁ bhikkhave, tatiyo ānisaṁso sīlavato sīlasampadāya.
Furthermore, an ethical person enters any kind of assembly bold and self-assured, whether it’s an assembly of aristocrats, brahmins, householders, or ascetics. This is the third benefit.
पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, सीलवा सीलसम्पन्नो असम्मूळ्हो कालं करोति। अयं, भिक्खवे, चतुत्थो आनिसंसो सीलवतो सीलसम्पदाय।
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, sīlavā sīlasampanno asammūḷho kālaṁ karoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, catuttho ānisaṁso sīlavato sīlasampadāya.
Furthermore, an ethical person dies not feeling lost. This is the fourth benefit.
पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, सीलवा सीलसम्पन्नो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा सुगतिं सग्गं लोकं उपपज्जति। अयं, भिक्खवे, पञ्चमो आनिसंसो सीलवतो सीलसम्पदाय।
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, sīlavā sīlasampanno kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjati. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, pañcamo ānisaṁso sīlavato sīlasampadāya.
Furthermore, when an ethical person’s body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm. This is the fifth benefit.
इमे खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्च आनिसंसा सीलवतो सीलसम्पदाया”ति।
Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca ānisaṁsā sīlavato sīlasampadāyā”ti.
These are the five benefits for an ethical person because of their accomplishment in ethics.”
