Sleep
एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
अथ खो भगवा सायन्हसमयं पटिसल्लाना वुट्ठितो येनुपट्ठानसाला तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा पञ्ञत्ते आसने निसीदि। आयस्मापि खो सारिपुत्तो सायन्हसमयं पटिसल्लाना वुट्ठितो येनुपट्ठानसाला तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। आयस्मापि खो महामोग्गल्लानो … आयस्मापि खो महाकस्सपो … आयस्मापि खो महाकच्चानो … आयस्मापि खो महाकोट्ठिको … आयस्मापि खो महाचुन्दो … आयस्मापि खो महाकप्पिनो … आयस्मापि खो अनुरुद्धो … आयस्मापि खो रेवतो … आयस्मापि खो आनन्दो सायन्हसमयं पटिसल्लाना वुट्ठितो येनुपट्ठानसाला तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। अथ खो भगवा बहुदेव रत्तिं निसज्जाय वीतिनामेत्वा उट्ठायासना विहारं पाविसि। तेपि खो आयस्मन्तो अचिरपक्कन्तस्स भगवतो उट्ठायासना यथाविहारं अगमंसु।
Atha kho bhagavā sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yenupaṭṭhānasālā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. Āyasmāpi kho sāriputto sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yenupaṭṭhānasālā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Āyasmāpi kho mahāmoggallāno … āyasmāpi kho mahākassapo … āyasmāpi kho mahākaccāno … āyasmāpi kho mahākoṭṭhiko … āyasmāpi kho mahācundo … āyasmāpi kho mahākappino … āyasmāpi kho anuruddho … āyasmāpi kho revato … āyasmāpi kho ānando sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yenupaṭṭhānasālā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Atha kho bhagavā bahudeva rattiṁ nisajjāya vītināmetvā uṭṭhāyāsanā vihāraṁ pāvisi. Tepi kho āyasmanto acirapakkantassa bhagavato uṭṭhāyāsanā yathāvihāraṁ agamaṁsu.
Then in the late afternoon, the Buddha came out of retreat, went to the assembly hall, and sat down on the seat spread out. Venerable Sāriputta also came out of retreat, went to the assembly hall, bowed to the Buddha and sat down to one side. Venerables Mahāmoggallāna, Mahākassapa, Mahākaccāna, Mahākoṭṭhita, Mahācunda, Mahākappina, Anuruddha, Revata, and Ānanda did the same. The Buddha spent much of the night sitting in meditation, then got up from his seat and entered his dwelling. And soon after the Buddha left those venerables each went to their own dwelling.
ये पन तत्थ भिक्खू नवा अचिरपब्बजिता अधुनागता इमं धम्मविनयं ते याव सूरियुग्गमना काकच्छमाना सुपिंसु। अद्दसा खो भगवा दिब्बेन चक्खुना विसुद्धेन अतिक्कन्तमानुसकेन ते भिक्खू याव सूरियुग्गमना काकच्छमाने सुपन्ते। दिस्वा येनुपट्ठानसाला तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा पञ्ञत्ते आसने निसीदि। निसज्ज खो भगवा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि:
Ye pana tattha bhikkhū navā acirapabbajitā adhunāgatā imaṁ dhammavinayaṁ te yāva sūriyuggamanā kākacchamānā supiṁsu. Addasā kho bhagavā dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena te bhikkhū yāva sūriyuggamanā kākacchamāne supante. Disvā yenupaṭṭhānasālā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. Nisajja kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:
But those bhikkhus who were junior, recently gone forth, newly come to this teaching and training slept until the sun came up, snoring. The Buddha saw them doing this, with his clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman. He went to the assembly hall, sat down on the seat spread out, and addressed the bhikkhus:
“कहं नु खो, भिक्खवे, सारिपुत्तो? कहं महामोग्गल्लानो? कहं महाकस्सपो? कहं महाकच्चानो? कहं महाकोट्ठिको? कहं महाचुन्दो? कहं महाकप्पिनो? कहं अनुरुद्धो? कहं रेवतो? कहं आनन्दो? कहं नु खो ते, भिक्खवे, थेरा सावका गता”ति?
“Kahaṁ nu kho, bhikkhave, sāriputto? Kahaṁ mahāmoggallāno? Kahaṁ mahākassapo? Kahaṁ mahākaccāno? Kahaṁ mahākoṭṭhiko? Kahaṁ mahācundo? Kahaṁ mahākappino? Kahaṁ anuruddho? Kahaṁ revato? Kahaṁ ānando? Kahaṁ nu kho te, bhikkhave, therā sāvakā gatā”ti?
“Bhikkhus, where is Sāriputta? Where are Mahāmoggallāna, Mahākassapa, Mahākaccāna, Mahākoṭṭhita, Mahācunda, Mahākappina, Anuruddha, Revata, and Ānanda? Where have these senior disciples gone?”
“तेपि खो, भन्ते, आयस्मन्तो अचिरपक्कन्तस्स भगवतो उट्ठायासना यथाविहारं अगमंसू”ति।
“Tepi kho, bhante, āyasmanto acirapakkantassa bhagavato uṭṭhāyāsanā yathāvihāraṁ agamaṁsū”ti.
“Soon after the Buddha left those venerables each went to their own dwelling.”
“तेन नो तुम्हे, भिक्खवे, थेरा भिक्खू नागताति याव सूरियुग्गमना काकच्छमाना सुपथ?
“Tena no1 tumhe, bhikkhave, therā bhikkhū nāgatāti yāva sūriyuggamanā kākacchamānā supatha?
“So, bhikkhus, when the senior bhikkhus left, why did you sleep until the sun came up, snoring?
तं किं मञ्ञथ, भिक्खवे, अपि नु तुम्हेहि दिट्ठं वा सुतं वा: ‘राजा खत्तियो मुद्धावसित्तो यावदत्थं सेय्यसुखं पस्ससुखं मिद्धसुखं अनुयुत्तो विहरन्तो यावजीवं रज्जं कारेन्तो जनपदस्स वा पियो मनापोऽ”ति?
Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, api nu tumhehi diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā: ‘rājā khattiyo muddhāvasitto2 yāvadatthaṁ seyyasukhaṁ passasukhaṁ middhasukhaṁ anuyutto viharanto yāvajīvaṁ rajjaṁ kārento janapadassa vā piyo manāpo’”ti?
What do you think, bhikkhus? Have you ever seen or heard of an anointed aristocratic king who rules his whole life, dear and beloved to the country, while indulging in the pleasures of sleeping, lying down, and drowsing as much as he likes?”
“नो हेतं, भन्ते”।
“No hetaṁ, bhante”.
“No, sir.”
“साधु, भिक्खवे। मयापि खो एतं, भिक्खवे, नेव दिट्ठं न सुतं: ‘राजा खत्तियो मुद्धावसित्तो यावदत्थं सेय्यसुखं पस्ससुखं मिद्धसुखं अनुयुत्तो विहरन्तो यावजीवं रज्जं कारेन्तो जनपदस्स वा पियो मनापोऽति।
“Sādhu, bhikkhave. Mayāpi kho etaṁ, bhikkhave, neva diṭṭhaṁ na sutaṁ: ‘rājā khattiyo muddhāvasitto yāvadatthaṁ seyyasukhaṁ passasukhaṁ middhasukhaṁ anuyutto viharanto yāvajīvaṁ rajjaṁ kārento janapadassa vā piyo manāpo’ti.
“Good, bhikkhus! I too have never seen or heard of such a thing.
तं किं मञ्ञथ, भिक्खवे, अपि नु तुम्हेहि दिट्ठं वा सुतं वा: ‘रट्ठिको …पे… पेत्तणिको … सेनापतिको … गामगामणिको … पूगगामणिको यावदत्थं सेय्यसुखं पस्ससुखं मिद्धसुखं अनुयुत्तो विहरन्तो यावजीवं पूगगामणिकत्तं कारेन्तो पूगस्स वा पियो मनापोऽ”ति?
Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, api nu tumhehi diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā: ‘raṭṭhiko …pe… pettaṇiko … senāpatiko … gāmagāmaṇiko … pūgagāmaṇiko yāvadatthaṁ seyyasukhaṁ passasukhaṁ middhasukhaṁ anuyutto viharanto yāvajīvaṁ pūgagāmaṇikattaṁ kārento pūgassa vā piyo manāpo’”ti?
What do you think, bhikkhus? Have you ever seen or heard of an appointed official … a hereditary official … a general … a village chief … or a guild head who runs the guild his whole life, dear and beloved to the guild, while indulging in the pleasures of sleeping, lying down, and drowsing as much as he likes?”
“नो हेतं, भन्ते”।
“No hetaṁ, bhante”.
“No, sir.”
“साधु, भिक्खवे। मयापि खो एतं, भिक्खवे, नेव दिट्ठं न सुतं: ‘पूगगामणिको यावदत्थं सेय्यसुखं पस्ससुखं मिद्धसुखं अनुयुत्तो विहरन्तो यावजीवं पूगगामणिकत्तं वा कारेन्तो पूगस्स वा पियो मनापोऽति।
“Sādhu, bhikkhave. Mayāpi kho etaṁ, bhikkhave, neva diṭṭhaṁ na sutaṁ: ‘pūgagāmaṇiko yāvadatthaṁ seyyasukhaṁ passasukhaṁ middhasukhaṁ anuyutto viharanto yāvajīvaṁ pūgagāmaṇikattaṁ vā kārento pūgassa vā piyo manāpo’ti.
“Good, bhikkhus! I too have never seen or heard of such a thing.
तं किं मञ्ञथ, भिक्खवे, अपि नु तुम्हेहि दिट्ठं वा सुतं वा: ‘समणो वा ब्राह्मणो वा यावदत्थं सेय्यसुखं पस्ससुखं मिद्धसुखं अनुयुत्तो इन्द्रियेसु अगुत्तद्वारो भोजने अमत्तञ्ञू जागरियं अननुयुत्तो अविपस्सको कुसलानं धम्मानं पुब्बरत्तापररत्तं बोधिपक्खियानं धम्मानं भावनानुयोगं अननुयुत्तो आसवानं खया अनासवं चेतोविमुत्तिं पञ्ञाविमुत्तिं दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरन्तोऽ”ति?
Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, api nu tumhehi diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā: ‘samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā yāvadatthaṁ seyyasukhaṁ passasukhaṁ middhasukhaṁ anuyutto indriyesu aguttadvāro bhojane amattaññū jāgariyaṁ ananuyutto avipassako kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pubbarattāpararattaṁ bodhipakkhiyānaṁ3 dhammānaṁ bhāvanānuyogaṁ ananuyutto āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharanto’”ti?
What do you think, bhikkhus? Have you ever seen or heard of an ascetic or brahmin who indulges in the pleasures of sleeping, lying down, and drowsing as much as they like? Their sense doors are unguarded, they eat too much, they’re not dedicated to wakefulness, they’re unable to discern skillful qualities, and they don’t pursue the development of the qualities that lead to awakening in the evening and toward dawn. Yet they realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.”
“नो हेतं, भन्ते”।
“No hetaṁ, bhante”.
“No, sir.”
“साधु, भिक्खवे। मयापि खो एतं, भिक्खवे, नेव दिट्ठं न सुतं: ‘समणो वा ब्राह्मणो वा यावदत्थं सेय्यसुखं पस्ससुखं मिद्धसुखं अनुयुत्तो इन्द्रियेसु अगुत्तद्वारो भोजने अमत्तञ्ञू जागरियं अननुयुत्तो अविपस्सको कुसलानं धम्मानं पुब्बरत्तापररत्तं बोधिपक्खियानं धम्मानं भावनानुयोगं अननुयुत्तो आसवानं खया अनासवं चेतोविमुत्तिं पञ्ञाविमुत्तिं दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरन्तोऽति।
“Sādhu, bhikkhave. Mayāpi kho etaṁ, bhikkhave, neva diṭṭhaṁ na sutaṁ: ‘samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā yāvadatthaṁ seyyasukhaṁ passasukhaṁ middhasukhaṁ anuyutto indriyesu aguttadvāro bhojane amattaññū jāgariyaṁ ananuyutto avipassako kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pubbarattāpararattaṁ bodhipakkhiyānaṁ dhammānaṁ bhāvanānuyogaṁ ananuyutto āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharanto’ti.
“Good, bhikkhus! I too have never seen or heard of such a thing.
तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘इन्द्रियेसु गुत्तद्वारा भविस्साम, भोजने मत्तञ्ञुनो, जागरियं अनुयुत्ता, विपस्सका कुसलानं धम्मानं, पुब्बरत्तापररत्तं बोधिपक्खियानं धम्मानं, भावनानुयोगमनुयुत्ता विहरिस्सामाऽति। एवञ्हि वो, भिक्खवे, सिक्खितब्बन्”ति।
Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘indriyesu guttadvārā bhavissāma, bhojane mattaññuno, jāgariyaṁ anuyuttā, vipassakā kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ, pubbarattāpararattaṁ bodhipakkhiyānaṁ dhammānaṁ, bhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharissāmā’ti. Evañhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabban”ti.
So you should train like this: ‘We will guard our sense doors, eat in moderation, be dedicated to wakefulness, discern skillful qualities, and pursue the development of the qualities that lead to awakening in the evening and toward dawn.’ That’s how you should train.”
