Thakur Jaideva Singh Biography
Jaideva Singh (1893 - 1986) was an Indian musicologist, translator and philosopher.
He had his early education at the Central Hindu College, Varanasi and graduated in 1917. He was influenced by the theosophists Annie Besant and Bhagwan Das, and he became a vegetarian.
In 1945, he became a lecturer of Philosophy and English at D.A.V. College in Kanpur, and later served as the Principal of Yuvarajadutta College in Lakhimpur-Khiri until 1956.
From 1956 to 1962, he served as the Chief Producer at All India Radio, where he made significant contributions to the promotion of classical music. He was influenced by the Indian musicologist Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande.
He met a German scholar who encouraged him to study Sanskrit.
In retirement he dedicated to studying and writing. He began to study tantra and yoga under Pandit Gopinath Kaviraj.
From 1962 Jaideva Singh engaged in studying and writing English translations with introduction and notes on Sanskrit works on Kashmir Saivism.
„He studied for many years with Swami Lakshman Joo in Kashmir. He prepared and published first-ever English and Hindi translations of a number of Shaivite scriptures. Singh spent years in the Ishwar Ashram for seeking Knowledge at the feet of the Master; and under His guidance translated the texts of Shaiva shastras and the commentaries by sage-polymaths like Utpaladeva, Jayaratha and Kshemaraja. He regarded his Master‚ the doyen of Saivagama’; and while his stay there Thakur would follow his Master word by word over the texts before submitting them for publication.” (Saints and Sages of Kashmir, T.N. Singh was appointed as the Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1973. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1974 for his contribution to music.
Jaideva Singh died on May 27, 1986 at the age of 93.
